What was the lesson?
Not sure if I really liked this, all the production and technical aspects are okay, but the story made me thinking about what really was trying to tell...The main question is if Homosexuality is a sin. Even if in a moment there's this explicit put in text and said that God love all, also it's said that is a sin and the important is regret it to be forgiven. All the subtext also reinforce this idea, the serpent nightmare, the clothes were Yo Han start using white but get darker till the black when he "sinned and fell into temptation" contaminating himself because of the "predator" Joo Won, the prayers... The end indicates a cycle of events still trying to resist.
So in the end I think even if it is kind off realistic, it is too much biased, I don't think that brings any real lesson, any characters development or really any help in anything to this group of people that already suffer so much in such homophobic society.

Doubting Thomas
Original Sin tells a story of a moment in life of a young man who comes to realisation that the church's teachings are not necessarily true but they are too deep seeded inside him that it is difficult though not impossible to break free from them. And once you do, in spite of all the praying in order not to succumb to "sin", you realize that the world keeps on turning and that you are still there, alive and well and praying! But now it is all for show! He still believes but takes the lessons with a grain of salt!Yohan is a devout christian, spending a lot of time in church and in prayer groups. He is also aware of his own shortcomings, as he is convinced the church considers as such, and tries to make them go away with fervent prayer. One day he meets a new member of the church and is fascinated by him. JooWon notices it and takes advantage of it by making Yohan's deepest desires come to the surface.
Even though this is a short movie, just two scenes were enough to paint the portrait of each of the two characters: one is closed off and fervently praying while the other one is a charming predator! Actors did their job brilliantly! Cinematography is dark and cold, underlying the rigidity of the church!
What I saw in this movie is a slight critique of the church indoctrination and unwillingness to open one's mind to the world. Joo Won points that out, using Bible quotes, during the prayer meeting and the other members are totally confused. Yohan wants to believe but comes to terms with his sin and decides to pray the sin away! Probably until the next time!
Some people here said that the movie supports the church. I do not agree. It is more like "Don't ask, don't tell!" conclusion!
An interesting watch!

Homosexuality and "churches", a bitter darkness
A devout Christian, Yoo Han, feels a desire against the "Christian" `doctrine´ towards Joo Won, a newcomer at the congregation. And alone Won´s appearance got him against his homophobic indoctrination intrigued. Therefore he is eagerly praying to cover his nature and tries to deny the nature and sexual desire ... in vain! Han but can´t stop looking at Won."The story began with the question of how far human desire can be controlled under intense religious beliefs and what the believers could look like when dominated by a desire that is contrary to doctrine."
I will give some facts. as a historian.
The bible, the fairy book, started to be written by the Jees in their exile in Babylon, where they copy pasted oringinal Sumerian and Babylonian texts, not even religious ones and created the scripture we know as Thora - the Old Book. The Genesis alone is 95% such a copy paste. Adam and Eve and the paradise is the original Sumerian storytelling about the beginning of civilisation somewhere at a sunken coast on the Arabian Peninsular. The Great Flood and Abraham is the story of the dramatic changes with the end of the ice age and the melting of the massive iceshields. And the worst for devoted "christians" is the Gilgamesh Epos, which is as well integrated into the book Genesis. That story is f.e. including gay sex between Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu ... SHREEK! Later implemented anti gay passages are 1st some anti greek text passages after the conquering of Palestine by Alexander the Great. And then this totally misinterpreted and translated passage "a man should not lie by man like a woman" the original says "a man should not lie with a bioy like a woman" IT IS FORBIDDING CHILD ABUSE / SEX!
The English best in denying all nature and natural made it homophobic in the James Bibele translation ... despite James being gay as hell ... with several courtiers being his lovers.
With the English the Catholic into the same idiotic doctrine latest in 19th century when the English "culture" dominated the world from Asia around the world back into Europe.
This stance is based in the original development of Protestantism in the beginning age of Renaissance, where the Homo Sapiens was placed in the center and no öonger the god figure, like in Medieval times. They had been too ultra conservative and wanted to stay in the darkness of Merdieval times. Something we see again actually with the Evangicals who fight against Human Rights everywhere, here they have set their feet.
The congregation or "church" of Han is obviously such an Evangecal nature denying assembly ... These brainwashing assemblies push their victims into isolation and lonelyness to be 100% subjected to the hate doctrine they preach. Alone the homophobia these promote or that Human Rights violating Conversion "therapy". It´s plain breaking a mind and life threatening and mentalhealth- and bodyharming!
Han sits in his sterile house and reading in this fairybook seeking sence for his life ... and then desire strucks in form of Won. Near the end Han is dressed in black, indicating his "sinming" ... Oh my ... what an arrogance of anybody slaming/forbidding love. "Very `christian´". "I am the lord, who makes you holy" Han prays ... in vain, he allready had sinned. Prayer, prayer against his nature ... Han ends in an darkened "church" room prays for solace against his lonelyness which this imagined figure can´t give. Such terrorised figures like Han are the next suicidal vistims, despite their "strong beliefs".
The film tells what religion is is: in the last end a life threatening, deeply depend and insecure making cult which is denying everything connecting with nature and real love ... Holding up the companies brand name but not able to get the soulö into is a fake.
And before one "christian" may try to missiomnary me ... I am atheist and humanist and believe in science , not fairy tales and imagined boyfriends.

must say left feeling flat - the acting was good, but the plot wasn't my cup of tea (& not talking about the same sex attraction issue) i don't come from a devote back ground, so seeing someone this addicted to religion is foreign to me. & yet get that as Yoo Han was all alone / an orphaned, he turned to god for comfort, as he turned to the church & the community it gave him, to be a substituent for the family he didn't have.
Joo Won to me was the embodiment of the serpent in the garden of Eden, u never got who he was or what his ulterior motive was - u just got that there indeed was one (not to mention he was shady as f*ck IMHO). he was quick to pick-up on how he effected Yoo Han. he kept getting close to him without actually crossing any boundaries, cause he suspected Yoo Han would run for the hills the sec he did.
but he kept finding ways to be in his vicinity (tempting him), kissing that girl - maybe she was another soul he needed to corrupt - one that took a bite of the apple. same as Yoo Han eventually did. also the reason he disappeared afterwards without a word - his job was done
also the reason i thought of this was cause of the girl in the prayer meet & her weird / scary dream of a serpent swallowing Yoo Han whole - considering what happened it indeed did....
the reason am left "flat" after watching, is cause this was depressing to me, Yoo Han's brainwashed attitude with religion - his lack of life & being open & vulnerable to bad people leaves me feeling depressed. so well acted but a one off
