Just Okay

I thought this drama would be good, but instead, I was disappointed.

I watched this drama with my Mom and Sister, and they both were disappointed as well. The drama started off good, but around episode 12, it seemed like they were preparing to end the show. All of the episodes after started to drag out. I also thought that the plot could have gone more in-depth. While watching, I thought that the chemistry between the main leads never fully developed. I really wanted to like this show, but it seems this drama is just not for me.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR BASED ON NEW CONCEPT THEN DON'T WATCH IT

THE START
this show started as a very exciting drama, I loved how the roles suits them & very expensive taste it had in the beginning. it gave me a very elegant vibe.. no one appreciated the Jeon gu won outfits, they were very cool.. I had many expectations on this.. I love how slowly gu won behavior change and their chemistry was wow the cast was way too perfect

THE FINAL
my expectations starts going down šŸ“‰ after watching that it has past lovers misfortune.. this 2023 was full of past lovers misfortune means almost the same story but in different font.. I would say that the storyline was really dumb but only ml & FL carried the show w their goofy chemistry.. the story is really slow & boring the first 9 episodes were good but not the rest of it. the ending was nothing but a copy paste from another Kdrama story I already knew that it would have a happy ending cuz seeing how the story line went & sorry to offend you but gu won wasn't a green flag he was only a green flag towards do do he and some dialogues were really cute & some dialogues were cringe obviously it was the directors fault

MORAL
the story itself is unrealistic I love fantasy but it was so predictable ngl obviously there is no way anyone were gonna die in episode 10 after all we had more 6 episodes left also in episode 15 gu won was meant to comeback after all what will happen in 16 if the ml aint alive that's why I say it's very predictable it's nothing but a modern version of copy paste drama so if you are looking for new concept it's not the best

Was the Song Kang dramas curse finally broken?

I'll be honest, I left the last two episodes of the show on hold for a long time because I slowly lost interest in the story. However, I'm sure this is the best drama I've seen starring Song Kang lol. If you know, you know.
I think I didn't enjoy some of the fantasy aspects of the show, but that could be a personal thing. Also I never connected deeply with the characters, which could explain my lack of interest towards the end.
I would still recommend if you enjoy fantasy dramas.

You've seen bits of it before... but it's still lots of fun

You are definitely going to be getting de ja vu while watching this, I agree with some of the other reviewers - I definitely found myself drawing comparisons with Goblin, Black Knight, and some Doom at your Service.

But you know what? It's still an enjoyable watch, I love the sound track and the chemistry between Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang was excellent.

There's some threat and mystery as people keep dying around the main characters as we figure out who that is and follow that trail, meanwhile the demon is making deals and ultimately all the stories come crashing together and we realise there's nothing random about this at all.

There's one thing they didn't face off squarely though in my opinion and I suspect it was to keep the positive tone particularly in the ending, but it just rang off key for me. Black Knight faced it head on, he was immortal, she was mortal, there are implications for that and as tough as it made Black Knight to watch it finished the story. I kinda get why they didn't go down that route, but it just felt like a bit left unsaid.

Cast are all brilliant. Kim Yoo Jung is always a top star and I enjoy watching her performances, Kim Hae Sook is brilliant to watch as well, and Cha Chung Hwa's character is brilliantly done too, I especially like her cap - which has "GOOD" written on it, but one of the O's is barely visible. I mean, just in case you needed it spelled out...

The show does have one of my favourite lines though, which i'll paraphrase ;)

"People like to think I control everything, but really i'm just a companion on their journey".

I like that, it played off well in the moment too.

It does have a magic button fix-all moment, but I think it worked and was led up to numerous times prior to it happening so it didn't feel like the writer had an "i have no idea how to get out of this, i'll just magic up a solution" moment.

The little bickering bit at the end however just felt really odd. I guess the writer was trying to get a final message in but honestly it didn't hit home for me at all, and just scribbled a bit over the general positive theme.

I'd certainly recommend the watch, I've not regretted watching it in the slightest, though I don't rate it as one of the best they don't all have to be the best!

Meh

Probably best done as a film trilogy. Some of the acting is questionable at best. A few LOL moments especially the tango dance, but thatā€™s down to the comedy displayed by the head honcho. Thereā€™s just too many cringe moments. Get rid of all those and youā€™re left with about 6 hours of good fun, a compelling storyline and some decent vfx. Otherwise, 16 episodes has become your usual claptrap.

I hope you're hungry for nothing

It's like you put every food that you ever loved into a one bowl and eat all of it at one sitting, you would think that it would taste good but no you puke at the end because mixing that amount of food is abviously gonna make you sick. This drama is like a mix of every fantasy romance drama that has ever been made so cliche, so predictable, so boring... If you're gonna make this psychopath murderer thing a big part of the storyline maybe not make it too on the nose, leave a little bit place for viewers to wonder this makes watching experience so boring beacause you can clearly figure out what's gonna happen next. Why would I wanna watch a show where I already know what's going to happen in it. No plot twist no nothing.
The chemistry between the main leads was undeniable I'll give you that but I kept expecting him to turn into a real human again when he comes back, so they can finish their love story with a proper ending at least in this lifetime but no that didn't happen. I almost thought he was going to have a breakthrough or something while talking to that man he had a deal with at the subway about being a real human but no that didn't happen either

Cool premise but lost the plot

Around halfway through it becomes clear that the writers have no idea what they want to do with this show, so every two episodes is a useless conflict that creates unnecessary angst before the male lead resolves it with... plot armour? All intrigue built in the first few episodes slowly goes away as the plot becomes more and more ridiculous. All of the characters lose all of their interesting characterizations in favour of a trope-filled plot. And while I love a good trope, this show is all tropes no substance. The stakes don't feel real, and no matter how well the characters act, the writing is too bad for me to buy into the story.

My Demon: A Promising Premise, Disappointing Execution

I went into this show positively. I loved the visual chemistry of the leads, the idea of a supernatural romance, and the use of the fake marriage trope. I was also excited for this knowing that the writer behind Mr. Queen (one of my favorite dramas of all time) was on the production team. However, when it got down to watching the actual show, waiting week after week for those two new episodes, I found myself utterly frustrated and disappointed with the outcome to a show that held so much promise.

I'm going to start with the positives. Kim Yoojung was pretty solid in this. The banter in this show was entertaining. The chemistry between the leads felt organic and not forced. The family business power struggle storyline was pretty interesting, as with the whodunit aspect. The gang was a super fun addition and their presence wasn't too overbearing or too missed. Overall, the direction wasn't terrible and the story finished in a way that wasn't super unsatisfying. An average k-drama at best.

Now, with the negatives. I can't fathom how this script was approved with a 16 episode format in mind. This dragged IMMENSELY, especially in the second half. It tries to juggle so many storylines that they introduce pretty early on in the show and are left in the air until they dump it all to you in one dense chunk of an episode(I'm talking about Guwon's past, which was so obvious as soon as they introduced it). And you'd think that these stories could have filled out this runtime well, but no! We have so much unnecessary fluff to endure to pad out these 16 episodes. This show did not make me care about the secondary characters at all and pretty much everything that didn't have to do with Dohee and Guwon bored me to tears. And somewhere around episode 12, I started asking myself, "How is this not over yet? What else needs to be addressed?", and that thought became more and more frequent as the show progressed. You know how these plots progress? Dumb character decisions that make no sense and have zero motivation other than to extend the time spent on the plot. This show STRUGGLED with its episode count and it shows horribly.

And as much as I love the guy, Song Kang can't act (yet). I thought he'd be great as a intimidating demon character given his previous work in Sweet Home, but his line delivery was so stiff and awkward 90% of the time. I think the only times I found him charming were his scenes where he's playing this almost puppy dog-like character with Dohee, and some of his comedic bits actually worked for me. It's a shame the story focused so much on him, because at the moment(I sincerely want to see him improve, really), he is not fit for this role technically. But visually, 10/10, def pulled off the look of a supernatural entity.

While we're on the subject of the supernatural, the lore/world-building set up by the writer sounded super interesting to begin with. I loved the idea of a morally-deattached immortal finding his reconnection with humanity, but the rules of the extent of his powers were so loose and confusing. His powers just felt so loosely defined, as if they could be whatever they want for the sake of plot convenience. The idea that he must make contracts continuously or he'll start to combust also just felt very inconsistent. It's probably the weird pacing of the show(what is the exact timeline of all these events? weeks? months? i dont know anymore), but they only addressed the point of contracts/combustion like twice in the show, because if they did address more, Guwon would not be around Dohee as much and therefore limit the main plot's progression. They made a big deal about these contracts in the beginning of the show, too, only to be an afterthought later in the show. Disappointing, to set up such an interesting set of rules for your main character's species, only to underdevelop important parts of it and over use the parts that make the plot move more conveniently.

In the end, I can't say I'm angry at this show. It had me invested at times, gave me something to giggle at once in a while. If I didn't have such a hype for this show beforehand, I might give drama a worse rating, but at the moment, I just feel let down by something that should have been so good. And personally, I think it lies almost entirely within the script. I won't blame anyone for liking this show, but I just can't get over its lost potential.

Average, Over-Hyped Drama: Recycling Fantasy/Makjang Storylines

Being a Netflix production, this drama already had created a buzz even before airing. Now at the end, the only thing that worked for it were the stunning visuals, addicting main OST & chemistry of the main leads. It had created a great build-up of the mystical element but loses it with the lackluster revenge plot, unnecessary past life stories and conclusion that was just there cause happy ending is needed. Had already posted about it but this drama should have just kept with the modern story and wrapped up in 10-12 episodes. But alas - they stretched it so much that what was initially exciting became super boring & you just fast forward to finish it out of frustration than eagerness.

What Worked:
ā€¢ Stunning visuals & chemistry of the main leads
ā€¢ Initial, good build up of mystery around Demon & FL (power-exchange) and family fighting for power
ā€¢ Cha Chung Hwa as Noh Sook Nyeo- just because she is a fantastic actress!

What Did Not Work:
ā€¢ Unnecessary inclusion of past lives (the historical era of the main leads).
ā€¢ Antagonists were not written well. Felt they cropped up randomly only to be beaten up by an OP character & just lost with no conclusion.
ā€¢ What was the SML doing? What was his need - unnecessary love triangle to be written off easily?
ā€¢ Comedic elements that just don't work & were not needed (the office workers, the gangsters, the secretaries & ML/FL's futile attempt at it)

The show borrowed a lot from fantasy and makjang dramas given it was centered around a mystical character & family fighting for power. But rather than taking it to another level or giving its own flavor/twist, it fails to bring anything unique and becomes dragged+ boring. What initially excited me: Love story of Demon & Human amidst Family Feud, gets stretched to a point that it breaks and is not digestible. It would have been better to end in the modern setting with his powers returning & discovering the identity of the antagonist(s). Extremely disappointing - especially since I had high hopes with the premise & this is my first drama of Song Kang.

My verdict to Binge or Skip? SKIP IT!
It is an average drama - so my advice is to skip it and use your time to rewatch your favorite fantasy dramas or something else with a better story.

Go to drama for a badass hero and heroine!

I basically loved every aspect of the drama except the ending episode where his re-entry in the story could have been made more interesting and kind of sudden and not just got him there standing next to her on the rocks after she made a deal with him... Loved the concept of God and how even she had no idea how things would turn out to be by the end. The concept that even though demon or evil entities get powers from God, the fact that even they require God's help at some point in their journey is so well portrayed.

Never Experienced a drama like this before

Wow k dramas really can bring me to tears like no other. This drama has done something I have not personally experienced from any other. Letā€™s get into it.

First off, love the character dynamic of the Main Leads(MLs)
Headstrong business woman with a traumatic past, and a eerie present with a hidden vulnerability( She desires a stable, and reliable protector/ ā€œsalvationā€ is what she calls ML).

And a Carefree business man who is also a very powerful demon who sees humans as insignificant soul banks.Until he meets FML of course ;)

Both putting on a front of commitment-phobia by the way.(in the beginning)

~ This is a long review~ proceed if you like to read

[PSA]Iā€™m only going to speak on what I liked because what I disliked is very trivial now that Iā€™ve finished the series.

*The tattoo and power transfer was unexpected but it made the story more interesting

*I liked that the relationship build up wasnā€™t rushed or slow and it didnā€™t overshadow the storyline, it actually gave it some dimension, kind of like a soft pillow after being punched in the gut:)

*ML pursues first, despite FML being attracted first. He fell harder and He fell in love pretty quick for a demon with commitment issues. It was cute.

*ML was very willing to protect the FML and help her with all the BS going on with her ā€œfamilyā€ despite pretending to only care because of the tattoo

Now for the parts that really surprised me;)

In the typical drama, after the MLs becomes an official couple, there usually like 2 intimate scenes and then a random breakup and then something crazy happens, they get back together, kiss and the end.

We rarely get to see a drama where the MLs becomes a actual couple and we as the viewers get to witness the full intimacy of their love.

This drama does that!!! Theres cuddles, 1000s of hugs and kisses(exaggerations but close enough). Thereā€™s super cute couple moments and funny moments and cute nicknames. Itā€™s was really like watching a actual couple. Two supermodels as a couple šŸ˜‚. And when I say kiss I mean all kinds, pecks, full on making out, slow kisses ,hard but tender kisses even passionate ones with actual emotion and not stiff at šŸ˜±OMG I was fā€*cking dazed !!! And then the pillow talk and sweet nothings!! Ahhhhhh! And letā€™s not talk about the fact that the ML lead a horizontal tango right after the first kiss. He was HOOKED! So romantic. When I say watching this felt like peeping into an actual loving married couples life sometimesā€¦Iā€™m sweating, and manifesting šŸ™šŸ½Please send me a Gu-won.

The last thing this drama did that I have not seen before isā€¦
It didnā€™t trying to completely change Gu-wonā€™s baddie characteršŸ˜ˆ. Let me explain

Gu won is a demon, hear that? DEMON! the devil to be precise. He makes his deals, takes souls and he has done it well for 200 years. And itā€™s not at all moral. At all. Heā€™s not a saint and doesnā€™t pretend to be one outside of protecting his wife(Do-hee). He views humans as nothing more than ticking clocks. He can be very ruthless and almost villain like at times. and this stays his stance throughout the entire series. I REALLY liked that because Iā€™ve noticed a theme in dramas where if one of the Main characters isnā€™t a favorable
or ā€œgood personā€ they do a complete 180 and rebirth them by the end of the series, completely overhauling their original description. We donā€™t always have to have saint like MLs, heā€™s a demon for the love of..nvmā€¦ The FML did not run away crying because she saw the MLs ruthless behavior she understood what he was even before they got married; it shook her a bit when she saw those red eyes and him air chocking a woman to death but in the end she was willing to stand by her man for evil or for worse haha, he was actually the coward there. I think she understood that he was crazy af and the LITERAL DEVIL to the world but he was her husband and a cuddly bear protecter WHO WOULD SACRIFICE IT ALL FOR HER, ya know. that some deep loyalty fr. So sweet Tehe. Like Iā€™ve literally never watched a drama where the FML just let the ML do his thing without crying and running away. Very different.

Now donā€™t misconstrue my point. Gu won had major character development but it didnā€™t turn him from a demon to a rebirthed human or angel. He was still very much a demon at the end, he still reaped souls and made deals, he just became a more mature demon with a tiny bit more of a moral compass and a sense of purpose.

Lastly for anyone who cares, the side character werenā€™t a bore. I was very much entertained with the antics. The villains even had dimension.

This drama also made 16 episodes feel like 30 but in a pleasant way. Some ppl are complaining it was drawn out but we literally got a full on 10 different Acts in a 16 episode series. Thatā€™s talent. No part was dull and it all connected. anyways

Highly recommend 10/10

Bad acting from lead pair - one time watch for the visual that main lead pair is bringing

Just my personal opinion. I started this series just because of kim yoo-jung. But ended as a fan of Jo Hye Joo. Even though she only had a few scenes her screen presence was good.
Acting wise main pair was not good at all. May be production team might have thought like they can sell this drama based on looks of lead pair. As usual Song Kang again shown us that he is only good at make out scene and not in acting.
VFX was nice. Even the OST.
Kim Tae Hoon, Kang Seung Ho did a fantastic job in this series.

I would say this again : :D Special mention to Jo Hye Joo, she should get a main role drama soon. She was perfect.

I wont suggest this drama to a any person
