Season: 1

In the aftermath of the purge of their leader, Serizawa Kamo, they are granted a new name by the Aizu Domain Lord: the Shinsengumi. However, Kyujuro, who is deeply shocked by Serizawa's death, finds that his hands tremble, and he loses his strength whenever he grips a sword. The more he strives for the state of "pure white," the more the words his late father left him at the moment of his death to stop him come back to mind. Daisaku watches the tormented Kyujuro with mixed feelings. Kondo Isami encourages Kyujuro, but Daisaku mentions that he is unlikeable and untrustworthy, as all he does is let others make their choice for him. Shinnojo asks the two of them to calm down. The following day, Yamanami takes Daisaku, Kyujuro, Shinnojo, and Namunosuke to a temple school. They help teach the children as his assistants, and Yamanami conveys that the sword is not the only means to fight, leaving them to think for themselves. Daisaku meets Gengo, who passes him a message regarding a secret meeting at the Ikedaya Inn, where they are finalising to set fire to Kyoto and take down the Aizu lords and important members during the chaos. Daisaku tells him to stop, as innocent people would die, too, but Gengo asks him whether he has forgotten about his promise. Daisaku seeks out Kyujuro and asks whether the two of them should run away together to where nobody knows them, open up a teashop and live in peace. Kyujuro tells him that he shared his dream but that he wanted to protect the innocent people, not embroiled in the war, and that they could not go with him. Daisaku tells him that he is glad that he met him. He then passes on the secret message from Choshu to Kondo Isami. (Source: Drama-Otaku; edited by MyDramaList)
