The film tells the story of Gu Yan Wu , who was living in Shanxi in the 21st year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1682) and wanted to return home. However, he fell off his horse due to old age and frailty when he set out. In his coma at the end of his life, he recalled his life: when the Southern Ming Dynasty fell, he faced his adoptive mother who starved herself to death for her country and swore that he would "never serve the Qing Dynasty"; he was imprisoned in a literary inquisition for "anti-Qing and restoration of Ming", but he did not dare to commit suicide because "The Book of Benefits and Diseases of Counties and States in the World" and "The Chronicle of the Origin of the Territory" were not completed. Although he insisted on being a Ming survivor, he sent his only disciple to the Qing Dynasty's "Boxue Hongru Ke" examination room; until the last moment of his life, Gu Yan Wu explained to the young Emperor Kangxi the question of life: "What is the destruction of a country, and what is the destruction of the world?"
