The characters' dynamics were very interesting and pretty well-written. The two leads had many unspoken sides of them that were revealed by their behavior, interactions, and short dialogues. This was enjoyable except when it came to Jin Pyeong's PTSD. We knew he had it from only one 5 min or less visit to the doctor's and then it was never mentioned again. We only knew that his depression, perhaps his panic every time his obsession with the girl was stopped, and his alcohol dependency were related to the PTSD. I feel like more emphasis could have been given there, but it was still heartbreaking to know that he was suffering and where his actions stemmed from. I enjoyed the movie overall; it was quietly, realistically artistic in its shots, the characters were written well and the actors fulfilled them. The supporting characters were also developed nicely but not distracting to the leads.
Even though I feel like Jin Pyeong was crazily in love with her, I still more strongly suspect that he was obsessed and in love with their sexual relationship. There just didn't seem to be enough non-sexual, lovers' interaction with one another. The climatic part of the movie was gripping, and definitely caught all my emotions and attention up until he shot himself. I was surprised that he survived and even though it made me curious as to how the movie would end, I thought the end was a bit of a let down. It came off as cliche while the rest of the movie had been executed in an original way, but I guess the finale was meant to show that he loved her, having her name tattooed on his arm idk.

And the ending? She gets condolences instead of his wife and son? Crazy, that was so unfair!
I think I realized that I hate people who cheat.

An era where the Sexual Revolution collided with the Vietnam War---and the world was never the same.
Not sure how or why I missed this movie for so long, but this is the astrological time when many aspects of our lives in this incarnation are appearing for maybe another layer of lessons or a deeper awareness of what was happening at the original timing of events. As a point of clarification...when a movie/drama appears in my feed via multiple paths...I will watch it. I stopped trying to make sense of these synchronicities years ago. Their appearance is always an unexpected set of knowings.I came of age in the Vietnam era....it was a socially explosive time as thousands of baby boomers across 3.5 decades of birth headed to universities at higher rates than ever before in history. It was also the end of an era in the US of mandatory military service. Thanks to what some would see as unexpected partnerships between tens of thousands of college students and the wives of POWs applying political pressure to the Washington decision-makers. The political power of those two groups, along with an outraged citizenry sick of seeing hundreds of body bags arriving in the cargo holds of aircraft daily on the 5 o'clock news. In the 60s, 70s, 80s, everyone had different triggers, but for many of us, it was selfish...we just wanted our classmates and friends, who were drafted, forced into fighting for one of the many wars for profit, being used as pawns in the "no intent to win" war.
Understanding the context of the time is a layering of understanding of the many possible definitions you could assign to the word "obsession". The scriptwriting was a blend of simple human reactions/actions and the accompanying physical/psychological aspects that drive each of us into our own obsessions that drive us. The script is simple with the selection of dialogue well chosen, moving throughout the roller coaster ride of the relationship between the Colonel and the Captain's wife, relationships within the military ranks, and ultimately the final choices that leave a lasting impact in your memory. Sometimes doing what is right is not the optimal choice, but few of us realize it at the time. There is an element of inspiration in the relationship between the leads that reflects the same desperation of the Vietnam era.
The ensemble of actors was authentically believable. As each scene unfolded, many of them reminded me of people, I knew in those times who were doing, thinking, and behaving as depicted. When the "letter arrived", my reaction was visceral. I knew so many families who received similar letters. The "love" scenes were realistic and were an intersection point between the sexual revolution of the era melding into military duty/risk/destruction to lives.
Song Seung-heon as Colonel Kim Jin-pyeong ; Lim Ji-yeon as Jong Ga-heun---their characters were far enough apart in age and life experience yet despite their differences, their similarity of thoughts converged in their dialogue. I rarely watch Kdrama/movies....which could be an error on my part as a Gold Star daughter whose father gave his all for South Korean freedom...they are sometimes quite difficult to watch. That was not the case with this drama.
Our life journey has many phases and twists...this movie brought many of the events back into the conscious framework of my reflection. Sometimes a movie is a better book....but in this movie...the acting, direction, and visuals bring depth to the story even when the Colonel was sitting in the meeting remembering his "experience" with the Captain's wife in the front seat of his car... no, it was not his memory I found interesting (although---) it was his posture in the meeting as he gave the appearance of attention to the war discussion while mentally being at a place of personal ecstasy that was having a secret window into his thoughts...a private secret between the character and the audience. This is not a movie for everyone (as shown in the other write-ups), but I knew as the ending credits were rolling, I would not only re-watch this but purchase it for my own movie library. Happy Watching....Hope.

Form your own opinion
The reviews for this movie seem to be all over the place. The description for the movie tells you that it's about two married people having an affair, so that's what you should be expecting. I tried my best to avoid spoilers.I felt the romance between the two the moment they met, and explicit scenes aside, there was short snippets where you could see the characters love for each other, which showed how much their relationship was improving and the love was growing. The film is more than just the sexual content, and I'm struggling as how the people in these reviews can't see that. There's a double bogey plot twist, which I was 100% not expecting, but I'm not mad it happened. -- I also feel like people seem to be forgetting about the cultural/historical aspects of the movie, as it was set during the late 1960's.
The acting of the characters is very well done, especially the main lead. He does very well to emote and express how his character has totally become obsessed with this woman, like the film says. People are saying the main leads acting is poor, but that's just the character she was playing, is it not? Right off the bat, her character is introduced as shy, which I was able to see throughout the movie. And why would her character be smiling, when the man she loves is besides his wife?
Overall, I enjoyed this movie and the direction of it. The music choice was SUPER fitting, and it matched especially well during those steamy scenes. I never write reviews but I feel like I have to as nobody is giving this movie justice. If you are old enough, and willing to give this movie a shot, I say go for it. I see why there's mixed reactions to this movie, so just try it yourself and see if you like it.
TDLR: Ignore the reviews and form your own opinion. It's a beautiful story about forbidden love and obsession.

Well…
It’s exactly what it is. Erotica combined with a tragedy.Honestly I don’t know what I was expecting when I started this, I went into this movie blind but I knew it was in the erotica category. I was just curious because of the actress since I saw her in The glory the first time and liked her ever since. She did such a good job once again even in this movie.
I could definitely tell there was chemistry between the actors and the longing was something even I felt through the screen.
As for the uh, ‘erotic’ scenes, I mean I don’t know I kept laughing at it ? I don’t know maybe i’m just a little too immature for it still but the plot and sneaking around bit was what kept me watching.
I feel bad for the wife, she truly never blamed the mistress or her husband. She’s definitely my favourite character in the movie. On a side note the ending was actually heart breaking, I kinda called it though, I knew one of them was going to die.
But regardless a pretty entertaining watch.

Surprisingly beautifully filmed!
Obsessed is a 2014 South Korean erotic romance film about an affair between two married individuals, set in a military camp in 1969.I'd first like to say that I love the chemistry between the two leads; you can feel the intense emotions Song Seungheon has for Lim Jiyeon (and even the lack of feelings he has for his wife). Even the shy, demure looks Jiyeon gives Seungheon was beautifully incorporated in the feverish, passionate forbidden love between the two. I'm not sure if the costumes/sets in the film were historically accurate, but they added a nice touch to the mood, from the hair salon frequented by the commissioned officers' wives, to the steamy scene in the Jeep(?). I would also like to add that the music complemented the film very well, which is a first for me because I usually never pay attention to the scores used in dramas/films.
And yes, I believe that "Obsessed" has a high rewatch value, simply from how well the romance was filmed (.. and not just the sexy time scenes lol).
