Ji Chang Wook shares details of his character Cho Yong Pil in JTBC's upcoming K-drama Welcome to Samdalri.
Ji Chang Wook described Yong Pil as a person with a warm heart. Yong Pil, born and raised in Samdalri, works as a weather forecaster at the Jeju Meteorological Agency. He strives to provide accurate weather forecasts for the fishermen and Haenyeosamchun (female divers who harvest sea life). Yong Pil's warm-hearted nature is evident in his dedication to the people of his hometown. He is known for attending village festivals and events, singing passionately, and bringing joy to the elders, making him a famous figure in Jeju.
Yong Pil has a crush on Cho Sam Dal (Shin Hye Sun), who left for Seoul and returned to her hometown after eight years. He emphasized Yong Pil's sincerity, saying he is "always waiting for Sam Dal, quietly watching her." He also said, "He is a person who doesn't show it but is sincere."
To enhance the charm of such a character, Ji Chang Wook focused on being natural in his portrayal. He said, "I hope Yong Pil's overall look appears natural." He put less effort into styling his hair and costumes. In terms of acting, he mentioned, "As a character who watches over and cares for Sam Dal, I paid special attention to her reactions, watching and listening to her well."
Ji Chang Wook also shared, "We happened to film at a famous spot for dolphins, and normally, it's not easy to see dolphins. Luckily, we saw dolphins, and they were so lovely and fascinating. I feel like the dolphins gave us positive energy," he said.
Welcome to Samdalri is set to premiere on December 2. The K-drama will be made available on Netflix.
