The movie Sleep (directed by the assistant director of Okja Yoo Jae Sun) claimed the top spot at the Korean box office on the second day of its theatrical release.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticket system, Sleep attracted 56,156 viewers on September 7th, securing the number one spot at the box office.
Both on September 6th and 7th, Sleep overpowered other movies screening in theatres in South Korea, including the American blockbuster Oppenheimer, and other domestic movies like Honey Sweet, Concrete Utopia, Target, and Smugglers.
Given the high reservation rate of Sleep, it is expected that the K-movie's success will most likely continue through the weekend. The total number of moviegoers the film has attracted is 1,43,699.
Sleep tells the story of newlyweds Hyun Soo and Soo Jin, whose happy married life is marred by Hyun Soo's abnormal behavior when he falls asleep. Starring Jung Yu Mi (Train to Busan, The School Nurse Files) and Lee Sun Kyun (Payback: Money and Power, Diary of a Prosecutor, Project Silence) as the married couple, the movie has received praise from fans and critics for the cast's outstanding performances and the unique plot.
Sleep has also been invited to international film festivals, including the Cannes International Film Festival, the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Fantastic Fest.
