Netflix erred by writing the East Sea as the Sea of Japan in the Spanish subtitles of its original series The 8 Show and has assured viewers to correct the mistake.

The issue arose from the Spanish subtitles in a scene from episode 3 of The 8 Show, where actor Ryu Jun Yeol sings the Korean national anthem. The East Sea in the national anthem was translated as mar del Japon, meaning the Sea of Japan.

Professor Seo of Sungshin Women's University made a post on social media, stating, "Many netizens pointed out this issue, and given Netflix's global influence, I immediately sent a complaint [to the streaming service]." "I urge for the fastest possible correction to prevent global viewers from being misled."

On June 4, Netflix released a statement: "We have confirmed that the East Sea mentioned by a character in the show was labeled as the Sea of Japan in subtitles for some languages, and we are in the process of correcting this mistake. The content was not thoroughly reviewed when providing subtitles in various languages. We are examining whether there are similar cases and will ensure greater accuracy in future translations."
