Netflix's The Whirlwind, starring veterans Sol Kyung Gu and Kim Hee Ae, teases unprecedented characters.
On June 7, Netflix dropped character stills from its upcoming original K-drama The Whirlwind.
The Whirlwind centers around the power struggle between the prime minister, who decides to assassinate the president to uproot the corrupt power, and a deputy prime minister of economy, who aims to thwart him and seize power for herself.
In the K-drama, Park Dong Ho (Sol Kyung Gu) is the prime minister of South Korea, who makes an unthinkable decision that will change the nation's fate. To eradicate corrupt political power, he becomes evil himself.
Director Kim Yong Wan introduced Park Dong Ho as a character with various charms, from a headstrong figure who acts on his beliefs to a strategist who overwhelms his opponents. He added, "If you watch closely as Park Dong Ho's [Sol Kyung Gu] face changes with each episode while he stares at the camera, you will feel the subtle differences in his emotions." Next, the still of Jung Soo Jin (Kim Hee Ae), who looks sharply at Park Dong Ho, raises curiosity about whether she can stop him and hold her power.
Jung Soo Jin is a woman who entered politics wanting to change the world but succumbs to the lure of power and falls into the abyss of corruption with the president.
Kim Hee Ae remarked, "Jung Soo Jin is a character with such intense charisma and strong narrative that one might wonder if such a character ever existed in Korean dramas."
Writer Park Kyung Soo explained, "While desire can be kept in check by law, beliefs are hard to control. I wanted to show this danger through Jung Soo Jin."
The Whirlwind will be available exclusively on Netflix starting June 28.
