Tone of Ever Night Season 2 after 2 Episodes

So far so good, but it's taking me some time to adjust to the new characters, voices, and tone of the show. It feels more lighthearted somehow and not as dark. I especially am having a difficult time with Ning Que's new voice. In the first season, he had the tone of someone who had to grow up too soon, in order to survive and keep Sang Sang alive. His voice was serious, hard, rough, and jaded. Even in the light moments, he managed to sound slightly restrained, unless he was only with Sang Sang or with people he trusted. The voice in this one is just light and fluffy, like there is not a care in the world and it seems very strange to me. Sang Sang is on the verge of dying yet he sounds like everything is fine. There is no sound of worry or that something is upsetting him in the back of his mind while he talks to other people. I'm also surprised that Fu Zi is also more like a jokester. He had few words in the first season, but they carried weight and he was able to be funny with his words and actions without being overtly emphatic. Similar to the new Emperor, just a complete change. And everyone's hairstyle also seems more fluffy. lol

They didn't using dubbing in the first season, pretty sure they did the same for this season. So the reason the voices sound different is because those are the actual voices of the actors.

Oh interesting. Thanks for the context! I thought Dylan Wang’s voice is lower, but it’s hard for me to know when it is dubbed by the actors themselves vs voice actors. Did they use his voice in Love Between Fairy and Devil or did they use voice actors?

I’ve seen more episodes since my comment and am starting to get used to the new voices and characters. Thus far, the focus seems more on Sang Sang than Ning Que, but that could change…

Fairy and Devil was dubbed actually. It's been ages since I tried to watch Ever Night S2, but I am currently working on The Rational Life and I believe it is also dubbed but I can't be for certain if it is all the actors. 

Sometimes they only dub over certain actors because they are bad at delivering lines, their dialect or how they pronounce mandarin doesn't fit the role, or they don't speak mandarin at all lol. Most of the time it is because the mics used pick up too much background noise. If you watch enough dramas you start recognizing some of the voice actors and know when it is being dubbed even if they do a really good job with it.

I don't know about the other actors BUT CFY voice was I am 100% sure NOT DUBBED.

That's him .. I can pick him in a crowd from his voice, after having stuffed myself with CFY shows, YT clips, him singing .. rewatched L&P 3 times (and plan to again). That's HIM.

Also Song Yi Ren - I have heard her in other dramas .. unless they used the EXACT same voice actor for her everywhere.

And Wang He Di?? 

Ummm... that wasn't his voice??
I've heard that (not so great .. little squeaky .. slightly higher pitched) in his other dramas AND YT clips (interviews .. BTS).

What he lacks in 'voice quality' he makes up with his acting SKILL

Well if the actors are dubbing their own reels .. that's just part of 'cinema' production styles .. Some scenes are difficult to do an accurate recording and segregation of sound tracks for mixing in the studio (music - ambient - voice - SFX) with a location overhead mic recording the voice.

I thought this thread was talking about "voice dubbing" as in someone else's voice is pasted on the actor's own voice.

We who read subtitles (slow pace ones esp) can't catch the 'bad dubbing' where lip match is out of sync or expression and dialogue is out of sync .. because we are busy looking at the subtitles.

Anyone who doesn't need subs will pick up the 'poor dub' - that's a bad production team - especially the sound team

I didnt find EN 2 on your completed list. (Just got curious since I had a similar reaction and arc as viewer for this drama and wondered if you had finished the drama)

Hi

Guess what .. a year ago I couldn't bear to watch Season 2 EVEN though I was DYING to know what happens after that cliffhanger ending of EN1.

I had NO CLUE who Dylan was .. and 10 min of Ep 1 made me miss CFY SO MUCH. (I watch out for his dramas ever since L&P, which I have rewatched thrice)

BUT since that time I watched Dylan in his other dramas .. and IMMEDIATELY I realised he was one highly skilled actor .. and I decided to rewatch EN1 (just last week - after ONE FULL YEAR since my last watch) and continue on the momentum to DIVE into EN2 and TRUST Wang He Di to DO HIS MAGIC.

It worked. He was different BUT he WAS BRILLIANT - HE SLAYED IT TOTALLY.

Am SO SO glad that the 7.7 didnt stop me .. nor the change of cast.

 I WEPT SOBBED CHOKED WAY MORE than I did in EN1 - which BTW I also rated 10/10 .. but this for me hit 20/10 once you think of the WHOLE arc of the drama over some 103 eps.

TORE me up. He delivered!!

Yes, I ended up dropping it, unfortunately. I think the style of the drama itself changed.

Regarding the voices, yes it’s hard to know, especially for someone like me who is always looking at the subtitles! For the 2nd season the voices seemed to match the style of the characters, I just felt the overall style of the show has changed. That said, I may go back and finish it at a later point in time.
