Signal was good too but Nirvana in Fire was in a league of its own.Signal had that awful loveline going on (the story would have held up fine without it) and imho, the acting + storytelling + characters in NiF were all just far far superior. i have seen a good number of Asian crime dramas in the same level or even better than Signal, though I enjoyed Signal too but imho that top drama rating signifying it is better than Nirvana in Fire really leaves my head scratching.
Maybe it got to the top spot because more people watch kdramas and are unaware of the existing awesomeness/refused to watch the awesomeness called Nirvana in Fire.
I think it's because Signal just finished. The rating will go down later for sure. I still don't know if it's better than Nirvana in Fire since I didn't watch this drama yet but I plan to do so. Still, it's also a matter of taste. I watched a lot of asian dramas too and I do consider Signal to be the best I watched so far, without any doubt. I loved the storyline and, to me, the fact that there is at least a tiny bit of romance is a plus. It had some impact on their reactions at some point too. Also, although Signal is a kdrama, not that many people have watched it yet. Because it aired on tvN, a small channel, it gets less attention. Just like Nirvana in Fire, it's more thanks to word of mouth that most people started watching it. It's not a battle ;) Both dramas are great, that's all there is to it.
i can see what you are trying to tell. i have not seen nirvana in fire. but heard lot of praises. i am not aware of maybe "awesomeness" as you say. but NIF being historical and also lengthier drama, people may not be ready to go for it. all those who like signal are genuinely giving their heartfelt rating or appreciation. as nastou19 says signal did not start as popular drama, you know something like descendants of the sun. it was aired on cable channel. its initially ratings were also not that high. signal may not be best crime thriller, but it strikes chord in its own way. it slowly drawn attention not just for international viewers like us, but also for koreans themselves.
i agree to your remark on romance aspect, it may not be upto everyones taste. but signals romance is very subtle, it doesnot affect story line much. it also goes smooth, blends with story line. without much interruption. and i like that.

having said that,  NIF is already on my PTW list. i am trying to make ample amount of time, to start it. if i see awesomeness i will definetly appreciate it. its not like to glorify signal more than NIF by eulogising it. but this post of yours is a good thing. all those who are unaware of NIF, may give it a try. at the end, people may become open to wider tastes
I want to ask the same question is about how Descendants of the Sun is better than Six Flying Dragons but i guess we cant control people's choices even if that choices are irrational.
