The premise: they are indeed fans, a word that rightfully comes from fanatics. There's a level of obsession here which is not healthy anymore, it's clinically insane.
This said, this fanatism is fed and nourished by the media and the whole distorted entertainment business. The dynamic is very simple: if your fans turn their back on you - for whatever surreal reason - you are not going to get as much job as you would should you behave the way they want you to behave. Basically, the exact reverse of what happens in Europe and America, where stars CREATE scandals in order to get more news coverage, hence job and money.
This vicious circle could be quite easily broken if actors and singers in general were a little braver. I am sorry to say this, but they should finally stand up and fight for their own rights, instead of abiding to the business rule. I truly wished they had the courage to say: "do you want to see my face on a screen? Very well, then let me live the way I want to live."
All those stupid managers and procurators, what are they paid for? Can't they grow some balls too and at least try to change this rotte system?
I'm sorry I sound incensed - as indeed I am - but this issue makes me so mad! Grrrrrr

One of the major problems and scary to boot, is the way these groups/young actor/actresses are managed. It is very Old Hollywood and full of restricted controls. In other, more established parts of the world, this still exists but is much less prevalent. It is a horrible system and it takes away their rights and freedoms. Every time I read in an actor or idol profile that they belong to "so and so management group" I feel a little sad for that person. I wonder just how much real freedom they have: of movement, of expression and a host of other rights that they are probably stripped of in all reality. When I hear of an actor or idol being independent of these companies I rejoice for them!
I hope there comes a time when they become as rare and outmoded as they are in the US. (I know they still exist but not nearly at the level they do in Asia) And it is usually (pretty much always) a matter of time before they are exposed in the media and/or disposed of by the actor/singer in question. Look at the boy bands of the 90's here in America. Most all of them discarded their controlling managers as soon as they got some clout/money/fame. See ya! I wish that would happen more over there.
I agree with you about that. I don't like controlling managers, either. However, in America, we have the extreme that young idols are allowed to do whatever they want and often get in enormous trouble with the law and get out of it over and over again (case in point: Lindsey Lohan). I think a middle road should be taken. Do I think that idols should be controlled? No. Do I think that they can put others and themselves in danger and get away with it? No.
Well, I don't think managers should manage anything but a person's career. Like an agent, get them jobs, take a honest rightful percentage and keep their nose out of everything else. Lindsey Lohan is like every other troubled child star that comes from a really messed up family. But you can't site an example of a person making wrong choices and justify the controlling, cheating, lying and selfish managerial system that goes with some of these young stars. I believe about 9 times out of 10 these Managers have their own best interests at heart. They are self serving and run these peoples lives as if they are a business, mostly forgetting that they are human.
I understand what you are saying about a middle ground to an extent but the alternative isn't right either.
If you look at some of the child stars of the past and how they lived under the managerial system of old Hollywood and the controlling system, it messed up those kids just as bad as being free to make your own choices...ill fated or not.
(Judy Garland is a good example. She died at 47 years old and looked like she was over 60 at the time of her death. She took pills to wake up, pills to sleep, pills to perform and pills for everything in between...and she'd been taking those pills since she was a small kid. Foisted off on her by the very system she worked her ass off for. She lived a sad life. Yes, some of that was her own choice but it didn't start out that way when she was a child...and that controlling system from her childhood messed up her whole life. very sad.)
i dont know a lot aboutt he management companies, but i read one article a while back that said when TVXQ split to company was getting 80% of the profits with 20% going to the band, so these guys were getting 5% each.
the seniority system in Korea has a lot to so with it. from what i've been able to glean from articles and videos posted by people who actually live in Korea, person A is totally allowed to treat person B like crap if they are older than them, sometimes even if it's just by a few months. these idols have been raised in a society where it's NOT ok to tell the president of your management comapny to F-off, not b/c you might lose your job, but simply b/c he's older than you. for some of them i sure if never occurs to them that speaking up is even an option. the company says "appologize" so they do.quite a bit of time is spent making sure young people dont question what they are told to do.
in america the phrase "respect your elders" gets thrown around alot, but it really means something completely different than it does in Korea. when americans say "respect your elders" they mean "be polite to adults and follow the rules" it is not a directive to do whatever anyone older than you says and applies exclusively to children. adults are seen as being capible of deciding who deserves their respect and who doesnt. even though children are expected to be polite and follow the rules it is often considered the adults responsibility to behave in a way the engenders respect.
on the other hand it seems to me that as long as a female is "respectful" of her elders and isnt being promiscuous (aka dating at all) she can get away with pretty much whatever she wants.

Oh yes...It has to be that way. Very nice post CH! It's so funny the difference between what respect actually means in different cultures. You see that all over Kdramas to know it must be true. Elder treating the younger like crap and they take it...blindly accept and are told to forgive even the most heinous of crimes "because they are your parent". what?
I raised my daughter with the belief that respect is EARNED and not a given. I think it is dangerous to teach that respect shouldn't be questioned. There is treating adults/and everyone really with courtesy and then there is blindly accepting what adults hand you, whether that be the way you are treated, or spoken to. Adults have a tendency to abuse their power. Case in point...every thing you just brought up in your post. Their hierarchical society definitely has it's good and bad points.
Fake diplomas? Seriously? Dude, since when Koreans are experts at Korean bureaucracy and especially university diplomas? Especially taking into account that only minority of Korean fans can even normally speak English (even disregarding the spoken terrible accent).
Now not only the unfairness among the band members and producers and company bosses and all the other crap in that makes me sick (for example, all the shit with DBSK, SJ, T-ara and so on), but fans too - these both reasons make me feel sick about all the kpop and not even try to get into the music industry and just stick with the actors, especially if those actors are not even Koreans. As for the fans - I cannot even normally watch a MV on Youtube without having to read overly dedicated fans' responses and unjust praises.

Yup...As crazy as the world of celebrity is in America (and it's CA-Razy) it seems even more so in Asia!. I don't really get into Kpop at all but if I do watch a video of a song that catches my fancy, I NEVER read the comments. I just try and enjoy the song without it being spoiled. But i actually do that with anything I watch on youtube really...doesn't matter what country/genre...I never read comments. People are nuts.

wow just... wow there's no word that come to my mind to describe my feelings right now

Well.. For example, I hate Yamada Yu and I'd strongly prefer if she wasn't married to Oguri.
unless a person is personally acquainted with the stars in question i dont see how they can think they are in anyway qualified to form an opinion that warrants any consideration. to me that'd be like my daughter giving her opinion on the validity of m theory or the dectection of dark matter. no one would listen to her b/c she doesnt know what she's talking about.
i dont really even understand how one can claim to "hate" this or that celebrity. you do not know that person. AT ALL. having seen some things on tv and read some articles does not give you any insight into what that person is really like. even if they've done somethings you are morally against you STILL dont know that personal well enough to even dislike them as a human being. i find it esp difficult to gauge asian celebrities b/c they are under SOOOO much more pressure than other celebs. in an interview with Eatyourkimchi Simon asked the guys from u-kiss how much down time they get in a week. the reply: "none" in a month? "none" then they laughed and said "our time off is when we sleep!" add this instense scheduling with the pathological societal obsession with perfection and it's not hard to see why this or late star might come off unlikeable or make a few etiquette blunders. i'm surprised they're standing half the time!

Totally agree. And while there are some celebrities I do not like the "look" of or their acting I always get a really weird sensation saying "I hate that actor/actress"
I do NOT like looking at Matsumoto Jun. Can't really watch anything he is in so far. But realistically I know I have no idea what his personality is or how I would feel once I got to know him. He might be the coolest person on the planet or a total douchemover. And I have definitely found that in my experience, looks change about a person when you get to know them. A person can get more attractive for me (and I am sure, many of you) when are around them and they are funny and/or kind and/or just plain cool. And the opposite certainly can be true. Saying I hate a celebrity is not a phrase I bandy about. I usually stick to I do no like their acting or look...because really, that is all the knowledge I will ever be able to go by.
