Czakhareina:

You are welcome.

And awesome, you love GoT too. Game of thrones and Breaking bad are actually my fave american series ever. And i am crying thinking i still need to wait for 2019 for the last season of GOT.  T_T

Anyway Just a little heads up, much like start of season 1 for GOT, the first 2-4 episodes of NIF will pretty much be an introduction: of  the extensive characters, then to the political landscape and then thencurrent power struggle  of the Liang Empire. So power through that part, then its better and better after.

That's good to know because I usually do have a two episode policy for dramas, meaning if I'm not interested by the end of the second episode I usually end up dropping it. I now know to give it a bit more time. :)

Actually I appreciate the amount of time before the final GOT season, because it *barely* gives me enough time to prepare myself to say goodbye to such an amazing show. Damn I'll miss those dragons. lol

If you don't mind me asking, what is it about The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop that you enjoyed so much
  • All i can do is paste my review here.
  • NOTE. I've just realised that FL means female lead.
  • No, she did not give me a hard  time. But as you will see below, one of the other females did, at least for a while.

  • My number one favourite/
If you are looking for an original type Korean drama that avoids the usual cliches, then you won't find it here. But originality doesn't always mean good, and being unoriginal doesn't have to be mean bad.
What makes this drama stand out for me is some wonderful acting, and the fact that the storyline involving the 4 main couples are all as interesting to watch. Of course some are that little bit more interesting than others.
So I'll give my rundown on the couples and my thoughts on them.
    couple number one
Hyun Woo and Lee Se Young. At first my thoughts were that she was a bit of a stalker. We the audience were obviously meant to find her "stalking" cute. But I didn't, but as episodes went on, and she accepted him, then i forget about my initial reaction to her. But I guess what makes it work is the performance of Lee Se young. Sometimes acting cute can be annoying. But she overcomes that hurdle. There are also moments when she is not required to act cute. It's then you can see how fine an actress she is.
As for Hyun Woo.Hmm. I would have liked to have seen a bit more expression from him. But maybe he had it in earlier episodes. But at a certain point, he just just seemed to have the same kind of smile on his face. Although now and again, he did break out of that. I'd like to see him in something else.
NOTE. I was under the impression that she looked older than she was acting. But it turned out that he is 7 years older than her, and looks a hell of a lot younger.

    couple number 2.
Ra Mi-Ran and Cha In-Pyo. Two very good performances here. But once again, it's the female character that is the more interesting.

    couple number 3
.Jo Yoon-Hee and Lee Dong-Gun. The same here, the female character is the more interesting. But there are times when you just want to give her good shake and tell her to stop letting people walk over her, even if the writing wants to try and show you why she is like that. When it comes to the little bit funny, or more serious scenes, they both give good solid performances. But in the early part of the drama. she is given a chance to show, what she is really good at, and that's psyical comedy. She is a total natural, and reminded me of Lucille Ball and Carole Lombard.  Jo Hoon-Yee, do more comedy.

    couple number 4
Choi Won-Young and Oh Hyun-Kyung.Finally a couple where the guys story is more interesting
than the female's. Decent performances from both of them.
Note. I was surpised that she was old enough to play Pyo Ye-Jin's mother.

Outside of those couples. The best acting comes from Shin Goo. His performance as an elderly man facing the onset of a major handicap with dignity and fortitude is wonderful, and I hope has been honoured.

Park Jun-Keum. Miss Ko is probably the best character in the whole drama. You'll hate her, you'll love her.

Goo Jae-Yee. An icy beauty. You'll feel sorry for, and you'll want to give her a smack.

    other comments.
Even though the drama is 54 episodes long, it felt like it could have one or two more. I felt the story regarding the transformation of Park Eun-Seok happened too quickly for me.

You could say this is drama is about letting go.
Whether it's letting go of obsessive love, or letting go of something you didn't realise you had, until it's gone, and will never get back, or letting go a of wish for something, that seems out of reach, or letting go of something that you can't hold onto.

kudos also the to writers for creating some wonderful characters, and to the director.
I should say, there are some wondeful suits on display.

 Czakhareina:
Definitely Nirvana in Fire and Red Sorghum (2014)

I haven;t seen the series of Red Sorghum, But I recommend the movie. I'm reading the book, which so far, i find to be excellent.

 Czakhareina:
LoL i feel you. The main couple, especially the main FL irritated me.

I actually watched this drama more for Cha inpyo and Ra miran... and ofcourse the adorable trio of Hyunwoo and Lee Seyoung and her awesome and epic mom Kim JunGeum

omg same! I loved the married couple they were such a blast to watch, and Bok Sun Nyeo might have been one of my favorite Ra Mi Ran' characters. I'm so thankful for this drama for introducing me to the ever so charming Ra Mi Ran; I adore her and her work. Ahaha & yes the trio were also so entertaining to watch! Han Eun Sook was one of the most funniest & cutest kdrama moms/MIL to watch. You even feel sorry at times for the poor mom & all the heartache & stress she got from her daughters shenanigans. I liked all the couples except the main one - and honestly, the only problematic one was the FL; she was too naive/guillable/dumb and weak! - but the couples you mentioned were the most entertaining & favorite of mine to watch. Honestly, I was so fed up with FL while watching the series, I considered her one of the weakest FL ever written - or at least, from all of the dramas I've seen.

First of all, thanks for answering; I saw your high rating of the drama so I was curious on your opinion of it.

True.

I agree

At first my thoughts were that she was a bit of a stalker. We the audience were obviously meant to find her "stalking" cute.

you point out an interesting trope & double standard. It's true that sometimes stalking is portrayed as "cute" or "romantic" or more in a favorable way - especially if it's from a stalkers pov, while it is less often portrayed in a negative light unless used as a device to create a dislikable second lead or to create a rescue-the-damsel-in-distress situation. ( it's the same in American movies and shows: it's only portrayed negatively if it's a horror/thriller type genre). I will admit that I did not find Min Hyo Won's actions as sever and I, too, overcame her persistence when the aegyo kicked in and when Kang Tae Yang started reciprocating her more. I agree her agyo wasn't cringy or as annoying as it can be sometimes. Lee Se Young played her role really well. I think that Min Hyo Won was charming & so lovable partially thanks to the actress and her efforts and partially because she wasn't flawless & had moments her of failure so it made her more human.
Personally, the only person who's acting I thought was lacking was Jo Yoon Hee. She was a bit unpleasant for me. Maybe I've got a bias against her. And yeah her character wasn't written all that great (too weak imo) - but I think I know what it is: I was not feeling much chemistry between her and Lee Dong Gun. I feel like the other couples had much better chemistry than the main one (and they stole the show) - and that's why even though everything else was so great about the drama (the acting, the elder Lee Man Sool's story, the bromance, and most of the couples) it was hard for me to perceive this as a highly-rated good drama (I'm not talking about you, but why I,myself, refrained from giving this drama a high rating). I felt like since the main couple was supposed to play a bigger role I should judge the quality of drama mostly by their story development.
I agree with your sentiments on the elderly male character. It was a captivating & heartbreaking story and some phenomenal acting on Shin Goo's part. I also loved Min Hyo Won's mother. You hate her when you see her with her son yet you love her when she's interacting with her daughter in the latter episodes lol. And I saw quite a few comments on Min Hyo Sang's character development saying that it was rushed. I wasn't as affected by it, but I agree they could have done a better job. Anyways, thank you for your perspective. I was curious how others perceived it - especially those who perceived the drama favorably. So thank you for you detailed response.

@irish Btw, I forgot to ask, but which couple did you like the most?

 Czakhareina:

Hey there, been seeing your post here and i kinda feel like we have the same type of taste. Espefially for NIF. I was just curious cause i havent seen the Red Sorghum movie if you know links with english subtitle for it... really appreciate any help to be able to watch that movie.

These are the links of Red Sorghum movie (1987). I haven't seen the movie, but I have watched the drama. Unfortunately Red Sorghum drama still doesn't have English subtitle (I watched it in Vietnamese subtitle, the drama has been subbed by Zhou Xun's Vietnamese Fanclub). Red Sorghum is so touching, I can't use my words to describe how good is the drama and how good is the acting of the cast (especially Zhou Xun's). Here is a cut from the drama's last episode, I've cried so hard (this video contains the scenes when Jiu Er tries to stop Yu Zhan Ao - her husband from going to revenge the Japanese, after they killed her daughter, and when Jiu Er decoys the Japanese to where she set explosives to save the insurgent army). I love to rewatch the drama, but I'm afraid that I'll be obsessed again :(

Yes, Nirvana in Fire is definitely my all-time favorite drama. I have never thought so many people from Western culture love this drama so much. Again, I'd love to watch this drama again, but I'm so busy because of my study, so I can only rewatch some favorite cuts from ep.53 and ep.54 (when Mei Chang Su talks with the Emperor and when he prays under the Lins' ancestral tablets, so heart-breaking).

 Eliza:

I couldn't agree more with you! Everything was perfect! Except for one thing....I don't know how to put a hidden spoiler here so... Warning! Spoiler ahead -----> I really wanted to see a little moments of the romantic relationship between Deok Sun and Taek as a couple! Not just some slight scenes near the end. And also, I would've loved to see their wedding. But well...that's just me. :(

Even if the relationship between the main characters could have been more in depth, i also think that the relationship in itself it's just one small part of the entire world of Reply 1988. It is a drama that talk mainly of life, of time passing by, of family, of how things change over the years (even if we don't want to) and last but not least, the awareness of ourselves and those around us. So, yes, it could have been sweet to see more romantic scenes, but Reply 1988 gave me so much more than so many love stories i have seen, so i felt very satisfied with the end it had. :D

I feel the same way. Yeah, I know that the romance wasn't the main focus of the drama and, of course, something like that can change the fact that Reply 1988 it's my all time favorite drama and left me really emotional, speechless and lot more of things... Anyway, It was a pleasure to read you. :)

I fell in love with Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People when it was airing. It's the longest I've ever kept up with anything(anime, kdrama, etc) and it had me SUPER excited. I'd come home from school on the days it aired and immediately watch it no matter what.  It was also the first time I'd ever done that haha. I really like me a good Historical drama, and it fufilled all my wishes. The romance would've been better left out imo, but it was  a good plot device if that's how you'd put it.

Hi. Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. but I have only seen your reply now. I think I wrote out the couples the way I liked them. So what I wrote down as  Number one couple would  have been my my number. So Yes the stalker was part of my number one couple

Yep, in a drama I#m watching (won't mention in case you haven't seen it) This guy stalks the female lead. Well, she tells him that she has no interest him. but he won't take No for an answer.  But it turns out that he's not such a bad guy after all. He doesn't get her though.

im going to say two are my favorites
