I'm so confused as to where I want to go next summer for 2-3 weeks (I know it's in ages) I love travelling and I want to explore the far east :) I just want to know if you were in my shoes, where would you go and why? or if you've been to any of these places your experience of them.
Well, I have never been to any of those places, but from your list there, if you are going for two or three weeks, if you chose Japan, you could probably vosit both Tokyo and Kyoto in the same trip.
That depends what you would like to see. I have never been to any of those places myself but I will go to Beijing next year.
Beijing has a lot to offer in both traditional sights such as The Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City or The Summer Palace or modern sights such as the Wangfujing street and the CCTV tower (amazing tall building!) And if you travel to Beijing it is very cheep to travel inside the country, so if you want you can easily visit other more remote places as well. and maybe take a trip to the GuiLin mountains, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
I will go there when I go to China next year.
Taiwan is a slightly more expensive country to visit and Taipei has about the same things as Beijing to see and do and it is more difficult to travel around in Taiwan so I'd recommend Beijing over Taipei if you are thinking about those two.

If you are thinking about Japan I'd go to Tokyo... dunno why but I just love Tokyo's shopping districts (Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku) and the well hidden old buildings in the middle of everything new and modern.
But I also like Japanese history a lot and there is more of that in Kyoto then in Tokyo, so if that is what you want I'd recommend Kyoto. But as i wrote earlier, It depends on what you want to see.
duh it has to be japan -.-

why on earth u wud go anywhere else befuddles me.

otherwise, i think i fancy taiwan, but 2-3 weeks might be a little long
but u can fly between shanghai/taiwan so that wud be good.

i wudnt go to korea.

dont completely agree.
the cost between tw and beijin is probably similar or even mor expensive in beijing, and they have very different cultures.
If I were in your shoes I wouldn't spend the entire trip in one place. I'd definitely go to China. I've been to Beijing and it was amazing. The food was delicious, the culture/ sites were beautiful and the shopping was great. China has such a rich history, so to go there and visit the places that you see in history books really is a memorable experience. China is a huge place, why just stay in Beijing? While I was there I spent one week in Beijing and 1 week in Chengdu, in the Szechuan province. While I loved Beijing, I was happy to get away from all the smog. If I were you I would explore China or head east and go to Korea or Japan. There's a ferry and a train that go from China to Korea, likewise there's also a ferry that goes from Korea to Japan. To help you make your decision, have you considered looking at what festivals/ major events will be going on during that time period in each country/ city? i know there's a mud festival in Seoul during July that sounds absolutely epic.
Thanks guys, really interesting what you all said. Also never thought about travelling between places, figured that there wouldn't be enough time to get around whilst getting to see the whole of one city but now I'm quite into the idea of going to Tokyo and travelling to Kyoto from there. Seeing as I'm going to be filming and Kyotos scenery is something quite special and serene to me :) although also quite grabbed but what you guys have said about China, so I guess I'll just have to look at things like travelling around in both countries and weigh up my options.
