I have been a devoted K-drama fan since 2013. Back then, K-dramas felt like a whole new world for me to explore. And so, I have been watching them nonstop since then. One after the other. I’ve probably watched almost 500 different series and dropped about 200 (and spent over a thousand sleepless nights). I’m not picky with genres and watch almost anything that catches my attention. Which is good and all but lately I just can’t seem to find new dramas to watch. I feel like I’ve watched every single drama that’s worth watching out there, if thats even possible (?).

Well, to be perfectly honest, I don’t watch dramas that have aired before 2012 because of the quality difference. And there are very highly rated dramas that I’ve skipped because the story line just didn’t seem captivating.

Of course, I do watch currently airing kdramas (and even c-dramas) but those don’t seem to quench my thirst for the k-drama marathons that I oh-so miss. Sometimes I just wanna go back to the time I first discovered k-dramas when I got butterflies each time I started a new drama marathon.

That being said, can someone please prove me wrong and recommend me a k-drama that I might have missed. As I mentioned earlier, I’m not picky about genres but I don’t watch k-dramas before 2012.

Has anyone else experienced this dilemma before? Do share your experiences if you have.

I wonder if you simply have a Kdrama burnout (it is a thing) and if it's better to stop watching them entirely for some time.

I believe that there are good pre-2013 Kdramas out there that you might like, if only you can get over the obvious difference in production quality. Allow me to provide a couple of recs:

  • The End of the World: A mashup (?) of medical drama and zombie apocalypse. Interestingly, it's more about the follies of bureaucracy and people behaving badly during a crisis than about the epidemic itself. Unfortunately, the drama tanked and got shortened by several episodes, making it felt rushed in latter episodes.  It's still good, IMHO.
  • A Tree with Deep Roots: From the writer of Six Flying Dragons (which I noticed you rated highly), it tells the story of how King Sejong and his court made hangul alphabets. Lots of talk about the ideological arguments for and against universal literacy and ideograms vs alphabets. The worst that I can say about it is, again, the rushed feel of the latter episodes; the pacing is considerably better in its first two-thirds.

Definitely agree with @Kura2ninja, about the kdrama burnout, which has happened to me a couple of times since my introduction to kdramaland since 2003-04. Definitely take a loooooong break from kdrama. Not all dramas are great, you get a couple of good ones in a year but if you are watching a few daily, you'd bump into the not so great ones and rhus the dissastifaction. Plus as they say absense makes the heart grow fonder.

Also agree on Tree with deep roots and end of the world, both totally underrated dramas. And if you still want to give it a shot, i guess additional recommendations are:

  • Misaeng (2014_Human drama)
  • White christmas (2011_suspense)
  • Sky castle (2019_school)
  • And i know you said you dont watch pre-2012 but maybe some oldschool kdrama would change your mind, circa 1990s:
    • The Final Match (1994_youth/sports)
    • Sandglass (1995_Period)
  • Non korean:
    • Nirvana in Fire (China_Wuxia)
    • Kounodori (Japan_Medical)
    • Story of yanxi Palace (China_Historical)

I am in the same situation right now the only difference is I do watch pre 2012 dramas and have watched almost everything I like.None of the upcoming dramas excite me :-( Currently I am re-watching dramas.I will probably quit watching dramas for some time until I accumulate some unwatched ones and then marathon them.Atleast that's what I have concluded.

I'd recommend watching more c dramas. There's such a different feel to chinese dramas and korean dramas that I think the difference would help with the burnout. Plus there are sooo many wonderful underrated dramas that have been coming out of China lately.

I'd personally recommend:

The Story of Ming Lan

When We Were Young (2018)

Goodbye My Princess

Battle of Changsha

All is Well

Eternal Love

Fifteen Years to Wait for Migratory Birds

My Huckleberry Friends

I honestly feel the same. I am trying to take a break or even stop watching dramas not only because of duties but also because I feel like I've seen the sam ethings over and over again.

But, I recommend you try watching The Gifted, since I saw you haven't watched many Thai series yet. You an search for it on YouTube on GMMTV chanel. Also it's my fav series from 2018!

I miss the days I marathoned dramas , any ways u just need a break ,watch some Hollywood movies and some hallmark ones and then ur good to go back to Asian dramas.

Discovering something for the first time is always exciting! You’re entering the land of the unknown and there are endless possibilities. That thrill of watching something foreign to you, discovering a new community and encountering an endless list of new shows you can binge is something you unfortunately can’t now recreate in kdrama-land.

I’d agree with some of the above users. Give yourself a break, don’t force dramas on yourself and see if you can stumble across a new passion. Whether it be tv-show related or not, if you venture out of your comfort zone I have no doubt you’ll find something else that’ll reignite your passion.

And the fact of the matter is - good dramas will be waiting for you if/when you decide to come back.

May not be quite what you were wanting to hear, but I hope it helps none the less.

PS As you can probably tell, I haven’t been watching dramas for quite as long as you have, but I fully get what the above users are saying when they talk about kdrama-burnout. Personally, I attempt to just switch things up and throw in some chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese and Thai shows - which in all honesty, can be very different. Plus I’m still watching non-Asian TV with fam and friends. I also go back to reading my favourite genre of books, and have recently even given WEBTOONs a go.

But wouldn’t it be great to invent a machine that could wipe out our memories and let us relive the joy of binge watching kdramas for the first time!

I really liked Children of nobody.

The gifted (thai series) like Magical said is a great series too.

I second the notion on Sky Castle.  I just watched it a couple weeks ago and it sucked me in.

When I start feeling this way with Kdramas,  I look at it as a window of opportunity to work thru the K-movies on my PTW.  They are short and sweet, but also they have a different feel from Kdramas because they take more risks with the scripts.   I usually see new and different sides of the actors I am familiar with in dramas.     Often I watch a bunch in a row by a certain director or screenwriter or actor. Or pull up Baeksang award winning movies by each year.   I'll even watch some of the genres that are low on my preferences to widen my perspectives.    But most of the time I just let the dice roll.    (I take the same approach with C-movies and J-movies)

I too have some restrictions on how far I'll go back for Kdramas, but mine is to year 2000.  If you allowed yourself at least to go back to 2005, there are plenty with good quality out there.  I find that Kissasian has the older Kdramas posted with the best quality and if lucky, of course VIki.

The last kdrama i marathoned and really enjoyed is skycastle...recently i find cdramas more intersting i recommend :the story of yanxi palace 'this drama was a hit in china and my fav cdrama' as for 2019 i recommend the legends 'was such a great drama my ultimate favourite of 2019' and then there is the story of minglan 'the plot is full of twists and the heroine is so smart'

Seriously china must continue producing dramas biased on famous web novels coz they are fabulous.

I started going through the same thing and rewatched some favorites several more times but still wasn’t satisfied. I then opened myself up by watching Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo because I enjoyed Playful Kiss and found I liked that also. Next, I decided to watch Love O2O, a Chinese drama and loved it — but then I’m a sometimes gamer and a retired IT worker. Some other good C-dramas are: A Love So Beautiful, Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Le Coupe de Foudre, Go Go Squid, and When We Were Young. Right now I’m also watching The King’s Avatar.

Hope this helps you!

when the well has run dried, move onto another well. start from your favorite  genre.
