To summarize my arguments/how I saw the 3 players (cutting & pasting from an earlier wall post): Min Jæ - bad (psychopathic, he is always numero uno no matter the circumstances, selfish, without a conscience, no empathy). Tæ Joo - grey (engages in both acceptable & less acceptable behaviours to get ahead depending on the circumstances, but not psychopathic. From where I sat he tried to be good most of the time). Seo Yoon - good (in terms of what is socially accepted as good behaviour/morals. Consequently this puts her in bad position to chair the empire). There are 2 other areas on which our opinions differ: 1) I judge TJ in the context of the business world, which is a lot more corrupt than people realize, esp on the level TJ & the Chois are operating. I saw no evidence to suggest TJ generally had homicidal tendencies or would be a menace to civilian society on a whole. That's why I have always rejected the comparison to Hitler as nothing but hyperbole. 2) I see TJ authorizing the demolition separate from his other dubious behaviours. This was a horrible move, but like I've already said I thought it occurred because of an intense emotional reaction fueled by temporary insanity. In his right mind TJ would not hurt innocent people. I know you don't agree, but I think the writers, perhaps unintentionally, presented us with enough fodder to arrive at this conclusion. And with that, chingu, I think we've reached an impasse. I really don't think there's anything more either of us can argue for our positions. Or? What do you say? Feel free to have the last word if you want ... or we can shake hands & thank each other for a good discussion. I think it served its purpose in that we both have a broader appreciation of the character's good and bad points, though we still do not agree on which one outweighs the other. We don't have to. This is after all not a negotiation on Iran's right to develop nuclear weapons! :-)
Chingu!!! Hahaha, this is too much because there are some things which make me think you still read me wrong although you say you don't. The way you explain what psychopaths are, seems like you think I have seen TJ as a psychopath. LOL. Never. But let me just for the sake of abbreviating this argument that I never saw TJ as a crazy lunatic/psychopath/killer of all races NUTS. I saw him, and still see him as a man who let power corrupt him. I have said this is perhaps one of the strongest argument of the drama, and I continue to think this way. What I did was bring in examples of situations to make a comparison, but not because I thought him a psychopath or like Castro. I do think he had the makings of dictator, a dictator doesn't have to be as evil as Castro is, all he needs to do is want to RULE ALL above ALL. And that was what TJ wanted. He said it himself in the drama, so I don't even have to argue this. TJ killing himself seems out of character if it doesn't have the excuse that I gave it. Which of course, we can always disagree because that is my particular view of the plot. I cannot excuse his action if I don't think he did it to stop himself from continuing to ruin himself in the process. And where Castro is concerned Ill have to tell you a few things that most people don't know unless you go deep into the TRUE story prior to him becoming the president of Cuba. However this isn't the place for that, so Ill tell you in another way. All in all, I used to dislike the fact that I CARE for TJ even against my better judgement. Reason why I might have come on too strong with my discussion of him in the first place, and I have a tendency to only focus on what calls my attention forgetting the other points. Hence, I pointed out his flaws more than any of his virtues which are many as well. However, discussing with you made me realize I was being a bit too hard on poor TJ and I have soften up a bit, perhaps I have come to accept I can love him and care for him even when he became someone I would hate because the story is about how this person who was for the most part a good man let power ruined him. After discussing with you, TJ started reminding me of Dorian Gray. Poor Dorian Gray. He was an innocent young man with a lot of money; later he was corrupted by another rich man, and you could say pride (one of the deadly sins) took the best of him and made him obsessed with his own beauty. He sells his soul to the devil indirectly, and stays young forever while his soul rots in the portrait. Of course this turned Dorian into a bad man for a while; until he is not anymore and realizes his wrongs, and then the inevitable happens. This is so much like TJ's story, all you have to change is the power that corrupts him; in TJ's case is greed (another deadly sin) and of course the story is different in the events and characters, but the essence is the same, even the ending. Perhaps you have read The Picture of Dorian Gray, or you have heard of the story (if is the latter then you won't agree with me unless you actually read the book) but I cannot help to find the similarities in characters. Certainly an amazing character, Tae Joo.
