Cang Xuan and Xiao Yao

That.. is so depressing to think about. I can imagine that, but I don't think it's the anonymity afforded to XY and not CX. He did wander the world for 200 years pretending that he's not a prince. But unlike XY he was actually busy, learning things, cultivating his people and building his power. But even then, if only he was fated enough to meet someone like Jing for himself. Maybe for him, his mind was always focus on something else so he must have missed all the opportunities. I think in the book, he said he realized his love for CX as a man-woman when he saw her return back to being a woman. I think he was always so focused minded on XY that he didn't let himself see anything else. 

Hahaha. It is indeed very depressing, and that's why I still tear up even watching the childhood parts thinking about his fate. 

The thing with CX is that even if he lived in anonymity, he never has immunity from his bloodline like XY, since he cannot change his appearance like her. Thus, his life is always in danger from his uncles, and he simply cannot afford to trust a complete strange. That's why even though many viewers find it cruel, his behavior towards XY before he knew her identity was completely sensible for his character. Even XY found his "cruelty" comforting and was proud of him, b/c she knew that he can protect himself in times of danger.

Xiao Yao,  

When you read these words, I hope as if I am saying these to you in person. When you open this letter, I hope you are smiling. I haven’t seen you smile like when you were young, in a very, very long time.

Even if you blame me and distance yourself from me, I am willing to bear with it all.  I’ve said before that I will never lose you, but I left you to roam and suffer for hundreds of years. I swore I would find you, but when we met, I failed to recognize you. 

Even if so, you still stood by our childhood promise, to stand by my side with unwavering conviction.  Xiao Yao, whenever the phoenix flowers bloom and their petals soar into the wind, I only feel as if nothing in the world, as beautiful as they may be, can compare to you. 

And so, when I look at your pure, untainted eyes. I swore to myself - I must obtain power, power to protect you.  And protect all whom I love.  Xiao Yao, I will protect your smile.

Reading the novel and this part was sad, as the two once carefree kids probably could never imagine that their lives would turn out this way. XY didn’t forget the words she said and how she envisioned a different wedding..perhaps with the two of them?

“Seeing Zhuan Xu getting married, Xiao Yao plastered a smile on her face but had no happiness in her heart. They stumbled, they fell, they drifted, they fought, along the way her and Zhuan Xu both grew up and now he was getting married. But this wedding wasn’t what Xiao Yao had envisioned.

In her memories: her Eldest Uncle’s wedding to the Sheng Nong Kingdom’s Princess was a lavish ceremony. She and Zhuan Xu got in a fight, he said a married daughter was like water splashed outside. She remembered later her Fourth Auntie committing suicide, Zhuan Xu’s nightly nightmares, her comfort that she would forever be with him. Zhuan Xu said she would marry one day and leave her, she innocently said that she wouldn’t marry another, she would marry him……

Though the crowd and the noise, Zhuan Xu turned to look at Xiao Yao. When their eyes locked, both had a perfect seamless smile locked on their face: no matter what, at least we are both still alive, as long as we stay alive, nothing else matters!”
