@Kokuto can you explain what the poison love bug is? why would XY choose XL if she knew what it truly was? o:

She didn't know that the bug would only go to people who had love in their hearts for each other.  The fact that she could lure it out of CX and into XL would be an admission of XL's love for her.

 WangDuo girlfriend:

I dare to say she doesn't even have the slightest feelings for him tbh. The friendship was built out curiosity and pity. Firstly, XY is an adventurous wanderer whose curiosity is the same level as a cat and their encounter was a coincident. XL's loyalty somehow doesnt rely on the stable side, which makes me doubt they even shared the similar feelings tho. Unlike Jing, she first met him near the lake of course out of pity first as she had the same painful experience as him, but she treasured him and loved him not just as a companion , but as a lover.

XL sometimes cannot be bothered by some bullshit, Jing in other hand makes sure everything is about her eventho she is really hard to be pleased sometimes

More importantly ,HE NEVER HAD BALLS to confess. BAD GUY FINISH LAST

I know I’m super late to this thread, but this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read in a while. And I’ve been reading my fair share of ridiculous stuff these past couple of months.

Lol I only saw this thread a minute ago..hehhehe But XL fans do also make some ridiculous thing too..guess we are not that delusion yet, right. I adore XL very much while still bias on Jing. They are both flaws and merits. It's just which type u like more.

As for will XY chooses XL if XL confesses...I will say if he confessed at the right time , after her break up with Jing, I am 99% sure she will go with him. But to how much extent I still don't know. There's no way to deny she loves both guys. But circumstances speak a lot too, so most likely I still don't think XY will choose XL if he confess at other times especially because he's opposite side of Cang Xuan and she might not be able to handle tragedy she may get  herself into. And yep her heart is not only owned by XL.

I remember this was covered in Yang zi’s livestream, that it would have been a different ending if xiao yao knew how xiang liu felt.

I think in the 1st season, it seemed XY loved CX the most (not romantically, obviously) -- she was always ready to sacrifice her life for him.

Jing's love for her had already taken root in her heart. How else can the physical manifestation of her heartbreak be explained?

Whatever feelings she had for XL could have maybe  grown into more if he had been earnest with her after her break-up with Jing AND, more importantly, if XL had promised to stop attempting to kill CX. No doubt the vengeful XY would want to kill XL had he successfully assassinated CX.

And may I add (although a bit off topic) had the bug been planted in Jing instead, Jing would have made the same sacrifices.

I could've sworn I saw somebody translate her full interview and posted it in the main comments section. It's been a while though and too many comments to sift through ?

Ahh nice! I'm saving this one! Thank you, Elise!

I remember there was also one interview where she was wearing a dark outfit if I'm not mistaken. So I think she says this more than once.

Yang Zi said it herself that Xiaoyao had no choice, only TJ chose her, if XL confessed her feelings to XY, everything would change.

This is her interview where Yang Zi said Xiao Yao had no choice:

The following is a quick transcript from 10:58mins onwards focused on Xiang Liu and other topics:

[10:58m] Actually after leaving Qingshui town, I was always in an emotional state, because I feel that lively, cheerful, carefree Xiao Liu no longer exists. I always want to cry everytime I think of it. After she became Xiao Yao, actually what I like better is... actually I feel that she was pretty sad in every stage because she now has responsibilities, burdens, duties. Perhaps, in certain aspects, during certain phases - she was happy when she was playing with Fangfeng Bei because she did not have to worry about responsibilities and burdens; at certain times when she was with dating Shi Qi and in Chenrong manor, she was happy; even when she was with gege, when they are not talking about matters pertaining to the country, not having to worry about whether they would still be alive the next day, just having a simple meal together - she was probably happy during those times too. However, I feel that for Xiao Yao, her happiness was always in stages, and short-lived. I feel that later, Xiao Yao is not as happy.
:
[12:13m] Q: Let us talk about happier things. We have a lot of adorable animated characters (?). Which one do you like most?
A: At first it was Fei Fei, which only existed a day. Then there was Furball. The scene where everyone saw me pull its feather actually does not exist in the script. When I was filming it, I was very angry. I was thinking I got beaten up, got thrown off, and I could not do anything, so I thought let me pull a feather, because I hope that Furball was flying so it would not be able to do anything to me even if I yank its feather, so I really yanked its feather while we were filming. I thought it would be edited out in post-production but I did not think that they would leave it in including Furball's yelp, so I thought that was amusing. Then there was our little fox belonging to Tushan Jing. I thought it was very adorable too.
:
[13:58m] Has Xiao Yao ever loved Xiang Liu? I feel this question... I feel an adult's world and perspective on love is not just solely "love, love". I feel that is a little shallow. To me, all the character arcs in Lost You Forever are not... of course I am very happy that everyone loves all our characters a lot, and I am very happy that so many drama fans, book fans and our own fans are supporting us. I hope everyone would try to understand our characters based on our character arcs. Actually I feel that Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu is not just a simple who loved whom. They were both... I felt that in the beginning, everyone had the chance but the reality is that they did not choose Xiao Yao. This was not up to Xiao Yao to choose. One thing I really pitied Xiao Yao is that her character's fate was such that she had no option to choose anyone. In the beginning, I felt that perhaps Cang Xuan also had a chance. That is my opinion. But Xiang Liu had his 国家大义 (greater good of the nation). To some extent, I feel that Xiang Liu achieved a good, perfect end for himself. He was a general, and in the end he died on the battlefield, fulfilling his life's meaning and duties. So from a certain viewpoint, that was also a good end for him. His life was fated to not be able to be with Xiao Yao. In the previous generation, due to the problem of standpoint (opposing sides) and fate, my mother A Heng and my father Chi Chen ended up with a tragic ending. As such, in this generation, it is possible that Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao were fated not to be able to be together. They are... as everyone watching the drama feels that they should be a certain way... but they are always one person moves forward, and the other takes a step back; one person takes a step forward, the other person moves backward. In some ways, everyone was very clear-headed because from the start, they knew that the both of them would never work out. I think we should interpret it in this way, rather than just focusing whether they do love or do not love each other. I think that is not what this drama, or Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao are trying to convey.
:
[33:20m] Did Xiao Yao know what Xiang Liu sacrificed? I am not omniscient so Xiao Yao did not know. From Xiao Yao's POV, she had no idea what kind of feelings Xiang Liu had for her. Actually she totally did not know. So I often feel very sad for Xiang Liu, but from Xiao Yao's POV, she did not know.
:
[35:31m] I am very happy everyone is discussing the drama. But I would still like to ask everyone to watch rationally, because every character has its own mission and obligations, so it's not just solely love or whatever. They are all flesh and blood characters. So I can particularly understand everyone, after reading the novel, would analyse the drama from a God/omniscient perspective, but I hope everyone would still follow the drama daily as the plot unfolds, so as to understand each character's hardships. In addition, we filmed this drama for half a year, and we worked really hard and sacrificed for every scene in the drama, so I hope that those who love our drama Lost You Forever, no matter which character you love, would be able to get along together and support our drama. That's right. Please do not quarrel. Watch the drama properly. Don't quarrel, okay!
:
[37:06m] [Singing 长相思 Lost You Forever]
:
[39:14m] [Singing 偏爱人间烟火 with TJC - video was muted]
:
[42:58m] Did Xiao Yao see Xiang Liu cry? Of course not. She was already unconscious, so how could she see Xiang Liu cry? That scene was for the audience, to let them know his feelings, but based on my stipulated circumstances, Xiao Yao did not see it, and had no way to see it. So you cannot judge why Xiao Yao did not based on the viewer's perspective, but consider it from a normal perspective, which was Xiao Yao really did not see it.
:
[43:24m] Also I feel that Xiang Liu is very noble. He did not let Xiao Yao see how he really feels because he knows that, after he expresses his feelings, perhaps everything would change.
:
[43:48m] Is Xiao Yao disappointed that it was Fangfeng Bei, not Xiang Liu? Of course not. Why would Xiao Yao be disappointed? Xiao Yao was not disappointed. I feel that in that scene today, she did not know who came into the room, and after she removed the mask, she had a moment of confusion whether it was Xiang Liu or Fangfeng Bei, which was why she asked, "You are?". Then when Fangfeng Bei gave her the snarky smile, she thought it was Fangfeng Bei because only Fangfeng Bei would do something like that. Xiang Liu basically does not smile. So her reaction was, "Sigh, Fangfeng Bei, why is it you? What are you doing here?" Although her words were harsh, but she still saved Fangfeng Bei. Although she told Xiang Liu "Let us part and not whatever", but she hurried back with the poison and wanted to see whether Xiang Liu had left, only to find he had gone. So she is a harsh-mouthed but tender hearted girl.
:
[47:02m] Did Xiao Yao start falling for Xiang Liu when they were in the ocean? That scene has not aired yet and people are already analysing it beforehand. Wait for the scene to air. Like I said, Xiao Yao is not most people's first choice, because everyone have their life mission, their fate, their story so Xiao Yao is not like she is a princess, so she can get whatever she wants. Life is not like that, so it's not like Xiao Yao should or shouldn't be like this, but it is more of even if Xiao Yao were a certain way, the ending would still be the same because that is her fate.
:
[56:44m] Why did Xiao Yao choose Jing? In Jing's world, Xiao Yao is the only one. She did not choose Jing. Rather it is... Xiang Liu has his loyalty to the nation. He could never be with Xiao Yao based on his stance because his priority is his country. Gege is also not possible because he is going to be king, so in this world, only Jing can put Xiao Yao first.

Xiao Yao knows that Xiang Liu made the big-bellied laughing doll for her.

The big belly laughing doll has no practical use, but Xiao Yao finds it cute. The more she holds it in her hands, the more she likes it. A big head, a big belly, wearing a bodice with a pomegranate pattern. Pouting with a small mouth, grinning in an endearing and naive manner. Xiao Yao couldn't help but smile at him too.

-- Vol 3 Ch 18 (Chapter 51)

Who is "他" (him) that Xiao Yao couldn’t help but smile at? In Chinese, the pronouns "他" (him), "她" (her), and "它" (it) are all pronounced as "tā." A doll would typically be referred to as "它" (it). Since the doll is wearing a "肚兜" (bodice), one might infer that the doll is female and refer to it as "她" (her). However, it would be unusual to refer to a doll wearing a bodice as "他" (him). There are three potential candidates whom Xiao Yao could be smiling at:

  1. Xiao Yao is smiling at the doll. Tong Hua made an unintentional typo in referring to the doll as "他" (him). This error was not caught in the initial proofreading nor was it corrected in any subsequent releases of the novel. We know that subsequent releases of the novel contained major updates such as character name changes and added dialogue. If the use of this pronoun is indeed an unintentional typo, why not correct it?
  2. Xiao Yao is smiling at Ah Bi. The doll was a present from Ah Bi, and the wording in the novel suggests that both Xiao Yao and Jing believe Ah Bi made the doll. However, if Xiao Yao is indeed smiling at Ah Bi, why did Tong Hua use misdirection to make it sound like Xiao Yao is smiling at the doll? Why would Tong Hua end her novel in such an anticlimactic manner, with Xiao Yao smiling for the first time in days, but at a minor character who isn't fully developed? Is Tong Hua trolling novel readers?
  3. Xiao Yao is smiling at Xiang Liu. Xiao Yao knows that Xiang Liu made the doll. Tong Hua intentionally employs misdirection to create the impression Xiao Yao is smiling at the doll and further misdirection to suggest that Xiao Yao believes Ah Bi made the doll. How does Xiao Yao know that Xiang Liu made the doll? Xiao Yao is a very shewed person, and is no stranger to symbolism. After all, she made Xiang Liu a delicious koi fish frolicking in lotus pond poison dish to confess her love for him (The koi fish symbolizes a boy. The lotus symbolizes a girl. Together, they represent love). Xiao Yao notices the doll has a big belly and is wearing a pomegranate-patterned bodice. In Chinese culture, pomegranates symbolize fertility and a blessed future. Xiao Yao knows that Xiang Liu overheard her tell Tian Er after the marriage robbery, “Who knows if I’ll have the good fortune to have children in this lifetime.” Therefore, Xiao Yao deduces that Xiang Liu made this doll for her to wish her a blessed future with children. This is why she smiles at him.

My opinion is that the third option probably most closely aligns with author intent. Take a look at Tong Hua's letter to her readers on the thoughts she wanted to convey in the novel.

Here is one excerpt from the letter:

“Lost You Forever” conveys a type of “raw” emotion. I always feel that in this world, while love is no doubt soul stirring, it is not everything in life. Family, friendship, ideals, responsibilities…people in this world have all kinds of ties, and there are many blessings that don’t come from romantic love. Eternal yearning happens because of profound love, because it is unattainable, because it is unforgettable. However, I am willing to bear all these emotions and live well. Life is a series of encounters and partings, a cycle of forgetting and beginning anew. You’ve been here, you’ve gone. Even though yearning is hard to get over, I will still smile when I see a beautiful rainbow.

It would indeed be thematic for Tong Hua to conclude the novel with Xiao Yao knowing that Xiang Liu made the doll for her, knowing everything he did for her, knowing how much he loved her, and deciding to carry this knowledge and live well.

Xiang Liu doesn’t need to use words to confess. Rest assured, Xiao Yao knows that he loves her deeply.

  1. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu willingly accepted the Poisonous Lover's Bug, fully understanding what it was.
  2. Xiao Yao knows that Xiang Liu used his Fang Feng Bei identity to get close to her.
  3. Xiao Yao knows about the unwavering dedication Xiang Liu put into caring for her during their 37 years under the sea.
  4. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu kissed her forehead.
  5. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu had been protecting her. She knows he would have given his life to protect her when he said, “The sea is beneath your feet.” She knows he asked Left Ear to protect her. She knows he sent a secret message to Cang Xuan to let him know her life was in danger the second time Xing Yue tried to assassinate her.
  6. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu saved her life on Jade Mountain.
  7. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu made the big-bellied laughing doll for her.
  8. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu taught her archery and had a priceless bow specially made for her to ensure she has the ability to protect herself and her loved ones.
  9. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu accepted her choice of Jing as a long-term companion. She knows Xiang Liu deliberately pushed her towards Jing when she had given up on Jing and wanted to be with Xiang Liu regardless of the consequences. She knows Xiang Liu saved Jing’s life for her.
  10. Xiao Yao knows Xiang Liu gave her the sea map to let her know she always has a place to go.
  11. Xiao Yao knows that Xiang Liu’s wish for her is that she lives well. She knows this is what he wants when they viewed the moon rise from the ocean and he said, “As long as there are such sights in this world, then life is very precious.” She knows this is what he wants when he saved her from the whirlpool and made her promise to stay alive even if Tu Shan Jing was dead. She knows this is what he wants when she discovered that he erased her memories of him from the gorilla beast mirror.

Xiao Yao pretends not to know that Xiang Liu loves her and did these things for her because Xiang Liu doesn’t want her to know. Moreover, Xiao Yao refrains from openly confessing her love to Xiang Liu because she doesn’t want to burden him with the awareness of her feelings when he remains committed to sacrificing his life on the battlefield out of gratitude and filialness to his adoptive father and responsibility, loyalty, and camaraderie to his men. Despite never openly disclosing her true feelings for him, Xiang Liu knows that Xiao Yao loves him with all her heart.

  1. During their date watching the moon rise from the ocean, Xiang Liu knows that when Xiao Yao said, “No matter how precious the scenery is, it becomes tiresome after seeing it too much, unless there's someone to accompany me, then it becomes meaningful. Scenery is always dead, only people can give it meaning,” she wanted him to reply that he would accompany her in viewing the scenery in the future.
  2. Xiang Liu knows Xiao Yao raised the Poisonous Lover's Bugs with him in mind, and he knows she truly loves him as soon as they successfully implanted the bugs.
  3. Xiang Liu knows Xiao Yao was serious when she seemingly jokingly agreed to give up being a princess and wander the world with him, provided he could let go of everything first.
  4. Xiang Liu knows Xiao Yao was confessing her love to him when she made him the koi fish frolicking in lotus pond poison dish and told him that he is her soulmate. The koi fish symbolizes a boy. The lotus symbolizes a girl. Together, they represent love.
  5. Xiang Liu knows Xiao Yao is sincere when she expressed her wish to have been born hundreds of years earlier so she could save him and allow him to live freely. If she was born hundreds of years earlier, she wouldn't be who she is or the person he loves. He understands that she would sacrifice her identity, their soulmate connection, and their love for each other if she could change his fate.
  6. Xiang Liu knows when Xiao Yao said, “I really want do go see,” referring to the uninhabited and uncharted islands, what she truly meant was, “I don't want to go back. I want to go with you.”
  7. Xiang Liu knows that every time Xiao Yao asked him to remove the Poisonous Lover's Bugs, she only really wanted to confirm that he still loved her.
  8. Xiang Liu knows that when Xiao Yao asked, “Bei, tell me...why is it so difficult to find someone to accompany you?” outside the donkey meat restaurant, she wanted him to accompany her.
  9. Xiang Liu knows that Xiao Yao sent him the snow globe to tell him she is willing to give everything up to be with him.
  10. Xiang Liu knows that he is the one Xiao Yao most wants to spend her entire life with.
  11. Xiang Liu knows that Xiao Yao poisoned herself in a final desperate attempt to persuade him to stay with her and not to sacrifice his life on the battlefield.

Xiang Liu pretends not to know that Xiao Yao loves him because he doesn’t want her to feel even sadder, knowing that he didn't choose to be with her despite being aware of her feelings. In the end, Xiang Liu got his “best ending” and Xiao Yao decided to start living for herself while appreciating the depth of Xiang Liu’s love for her.

A reader of Lost You Forever asked Tong Hua:

您在书中运趣出对爱情是什么观点,是像你在博客里所写的那样吗?

What views on love do you express in your book? Is it the same as what you wrote in your blog?

Tong Hua replied:

我的观点一直都是:生命的长度有限,我们无法控制,可一个好的爱人,能令生命的广度和深度增加。

My point of view has always been: the length of life is limited and we cannot control it, but a good lover can increase the breadth and depth of life.

Although they couldn’t be together and express their love freely because of family, friendship, ideals, and responsibilities, Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao loved each other deeply and increased the breadth and depth of each other's lives.
