Everyone: Wichai like Chantorn.
Wichai: I don't like her.
Everyone: You're lying
Wichai: *remain silent*
Everyone: So it's true.
So much discussion about Wichai's character, why don't we open a discussion instead so it doesn't get lost in the comment. Wichai is a complicated person. It's all the writer's fault (and partially the scissors).
Wichai likes Anong. That is clear as day. The way he looks at Anong and Chantorn is totally different. There are no sparks in his eyes when he looks at Chantorn like when he looks at Anong.
-He took pictures of Chantorn because she reminded him of his ex-wife. He doesn’t love his wife and feels guilty for her death. How can he fall for a woman who reminds him of her? It's not possible.
-He knows about Chantorn’s situation. Her mother is the second wife. They said she may end up being a second wife like her mother. Her family had a hard time during the war. Her family wants to marry her off. She does not want to go home because she does not want to be in an arranged marriage. It most likely evokes some sympathy in him.
-He gave her gifts. If you see a man giving a woman gifts as a sign of interest, you can say he likes her. However, if you see it as a good guy who is kind to everyone, then giving her gifts can mean nothing. The way he gave Chantorn the pen is too casual, and there is no afterthought about it (on his side).
-Another confusion may be the birthday party. Chantorn wasn’t invited, but Wichai took her there. In addition, she also wore a dress that doesn’t seem to be something she would own. Someone actually posted that the scene got deleted. (F the scissors. There have been too many scissors; it was especially obvious with ep8.) The dress was made by Choy. She had Wichai give it to Chantorn. Why was Chantorn at the party? We don’t know because it was never explained. The writer calls for it? Or another work of the scissors?
-If you are strong on your belief that Wichai likes Anong, the biggest confusion comes in ep9. He got the ring back and bought the ticket to Chantorn’s hometown. For what? To ask for her hand in marriage for himself? But why would he do that? He was trying to reconcile with Anong. He wanted to do the morning alms because he wanted to talk to Anong. He rushed off because Chat ran away. So, no. If he is interested in Chantorn, he wouldn’t have tried too hard to talk to Anong every opportunity he can.
-He was accused of using Nid, his niece, as an excuse to see Anong back in ep 5 or 6. In ep8, we actually saw him do that.
-Let’s not forget, all this happened after she told him not to show up to her again, to which he replied, “no problem." He ate his words as soon as he found out Chat had moved on from Anong.
Then, why didn’t he make himself clear that he didn’t like Chantorn? He actually denied it twice already. Once to Chat and another to Choy. It was them who wouldn’t listen to him and kept pushing that “P’Yai likes Chantorn” agenda. Since they didn’t listen, he didn’t feel the need to explain further. Which caused confusion to the viewers. Why is he like this? To that, we will have to take the actor’s words. He played the character; he should have a better understanding of the character, right?
“Wichai is a person who wants to understand others but does not need them to understand him back.”
Boy, doesn’t that just scream complicated?
-Wichai grew up being overlooked by his mother. He is the oldest child. Despite having to carry the burden of taking care of the family, his mother doesn’t really care for him. Instead of being upset, he tried to understand his mother (even when she didn't deserve it). In the end, he ends up suppressing his feelings.
-He had also said, as a judge, he must put reasons before his feelings.
I wrote too much. Feel free to pitch in.
