I'm a huge sucker for both bromance and the enemies to friends trope (the more slow burn the better).

In general I find a lot of BL dramas are cringey and their general quality isn't often that good, but I'm willing to give a try if someone knows a good enemies to lovers (once again, I love slow burn) story in the genre as well.

I prefer Korean and Japanese productions but Thai and Chinese are good as well, I know they have a lot bigger selection of shows with heavy bromance/almost BL/BL.

Recommendations for either please?

Btw, I'm not a big fan of romance focused/cheesy shows. I prefer there'a a main plot that focuses on something else.

  • School 2013 - Korean. Not BL. High school drama. This drama is famous for its enemies-to-bromance dynamic.
  • HIStory3: Trapped - Taiwanese. BL. Crime, but not that serious. Enemies to lovers where there's a little bit of plot in addition to the romance. The romance is pretty straightforward, occasionally a bit cheesy, and not that slow, so it might not be your cup of tea.
  • The Untamed - Chinese. Censored BL. Historical fantasy. The start and evolution of their relationship is a bit difficult to describe accurately. WY wants to be LZ's friend from the get-go. LZ recognizes WY as his equal in terms of strength, skill and intellect, but their personalities clash. LZ has a crush on WY from early on, but keeps it hidden. Later on, they get to a point where they are basically friends. The romance in the source material is very slow burn with lots of other plot happening, and since the drama adaptation is censored you could say that it's even more slow burn.
  • Hello Monster - Korean. Not BL. Crime. The main plot is about the investigation of a serial killer. There's some romance between the ML and the FL on the side, but the ML's relationship with his long lost biological brother is pretty much an equally big part of the plot. "Friends" and "bromance" aren't really quite the right words... but their relationship has emotional weight and I'd even call it a slow burn.
  • Alchemy of Souls - Korean. Not BL. Historical fantasy. The ML and the crown prince go from enemies to allies but it's complicated. The writers had fun twisting the relationship for laughs. And I think it would be fair to call it a slow burn. While there's definitely other plot happening, the ML and FL do have a fair bit of romance that does occasionally get a bit cheesy.
  • Mr. Sunshine - Korean. Not BL. Semi-historical. The ML and FL have a bit of romance, but for the most part it's not the main focus and there's plenty of plot. The ML and the two SMLs are rivals that basically become comrades.  They don't have a ton of scenes together, but I think the dynamic fits a lot of what you're looking for.

Thanks, I've seen some of these and know the others, but I'll check out History3!

  • A Tale of Thousand Stars - Has a bigger plot on the side and isn't too cheesy.  I easily get second-hand-embarrassment but this didn't make me cringe at all.
  • Not Me - This was a masterpiece. Enemies to lovers with kind of a twist. The plot is really detailed too for a Thai drama.
  • Bad Buddy - Focuses more on their relationship development than the other two, but it isn't too cheesy.  Unrequited love.
