Greetings,

Maybe I am asking for too much, but I am sure I'll get a suggestion from somebody of you experts ;)

As title says, I am looking for an Asian shows (pref. K- or J-, but others are fine too) similar or blending the settings/genre where the primary vibe is to feel this continuous challenge between MC and Villain, executed through very intricated long-term well prepared masterplans, mindgames, tricks/traps, multiple plot twists with interesting characters alongside or/and surprise ending.

--> Please see my additional notes below to "restrict" the suggestions ;) <--

You can check my MDL watched shows shows to get a picture of the kind of shows/genre I like.

Main genre: thriller, action, law - but for this request I'm more open to other genres - What I don't like much are shows too romantic or too comic. K-shows are so much appreciated from me because in many of them all the ingredients are well balanced: suspense and action blend well with some ironic moments, and the plot is always fuelled from interesting characters and unexpected twists.

I do not stick with thriller/action/law only, low sci-fi or dystopian are very appreciated too (e.g. Hotel del Luna , The King: Eternal Monarch , Tomorrow ). Some other Shows I really liked, if you are not checking my watched list that could be considered suggestions for what I am looking for (but saw already): Defendant , The Penthouse: War in Life , Vagabond , Duel , Imawa no Kuni no Alice)

With this request, I am seeking a show where masterminds - protagonist(s) and villain(s) - are using very elaborate masterplans long-term and where the plot twists occurs often, and/or with a blasting ending that you will never see it coming. Even if I prefer a genre that keep me from first episode already glued to my screen, I am fine with slow burner shows suggestions, as long as the characters are not "boring" and they have some particular traits.

I know there are many historical shows I should absolutely watch (I definitely don't have anything against them, I just usually prefer movies over shows when it comes to this genre) that could suit my request - I'd prefer a present time, dystopian or alternate reality setting.

Invisible  was the show I saw recently that recalled some Death Note vibes in terms how they were challenging each other, and brought to memory other shows where I had really good times with the twists and amazing plans/mindgames (Doctor Prisoner  as revenge theme,  Mad Dog  as really unexpecting ending, and 365: Repeat the Year , The Devil Judge , and maybe I'd add Circle  - for shows that I liked a lot with the low sci-fi/dystopian settings).

Thanks a lot for your time reading all the post and I hope you cold get the picture of my taste and suggest something in this direction! ^__^

Cheers,

My recommendations are not truly going for the action part. Most are more slow progressed than fast. But what makes them so good is the well developed story and twisted set of characters where no one is truly good or evil. Kinda similar to Devil Judge, Defendant etc.

So reis:
Money Flower - Money Flower is something that is very complex but absolutely genius. Each character is not one dimensional so you will see them all in the role of hero and villain. Some more in one role than the other but still no one is good and no one is absolutely bad either. Genre is thriller/law. And it does have a masterplan.

Watcher - Just like Money Flower. Watcher is a crime/thriller drama where you follow a set of characters that are neither good nor bad. You are kinda left wondering who they are truly in this cat and mouse game of culprit and victim. Super well done.

I know you also mentioned you wished for Japanese and korean dramas most but I still highly highly highly recommend you to try some Chinese and Taiwanese productions too. There is the Light on Series and some Taiwanese dramas that are absolutely masterpieces.
eg. :
Trinity of Shadows - this one has so many twists and turns and so many plans that you cannot stop watching till the end.
A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower - another absolutely amazing thought through drama from beginning to the end. There is one big plan that you don't truly figure out till the absolute end. Its superb

Thanks Lou  for your advice!

Even if not -exactly- what I am seeking, both Money Flower and Watcher are in my Plan to watch list and definitely shows I could truly enjoy. Lately my time is not much, therefore I waited with Money Flower since 24 Episodes takes a while. Watcher I think it got queued because I "overdosed" with the  same kind of thriller - police investigation and serial killers standard theme one after another, despite K-dramas are rarely getting repetitive in such and always enjoyable, I wanted something a little different.

I appreciate your other suggestions tough! My reason why I prefer J-/K- shows is really dumb actually - I simply like a lot more how those languages sounds, Chinese is a little tedious to hear (I don't want to offend anybody, it's purely how my brain react by hearing some languages and how they sounds, not only with Chinese!) - but I suppose it's just a matter of getting used to, for sure it's no reason at all for missing some great shows!

I'll add my watchlist and give it a try ;)

Thanks, more advices are welcome in the meantime  if somebody got more to add ^_^
