Romance dramas love male leads with tragic or traumatic backstories for some reason (is it the "I can fix him" fantasy?) but I can't think of very many where the female lead has a traumatic backstory that the male lead helps her with? Maybe some where they both have traumas, but I'm blanking on dramas - with the exception of the Better Days, and  The Glory - where the female lead's trauma or tragedy is front and centre to the same degree as male leads. I'm sure I've watched some and I just can't think of any right now.

Not as bad as the bullying in Better Days, but the FL was intensely bullied by someone other than the ML:

Not *exactly* a romance drama, but the FL has a deeply tragic and traumatic backstory that is front-and-centre, and the ML helps her deal with it:

And maybe:

  • Crash Landing on You - The FL was abandoned by her step mother / made to feel unwanted by her family. She planned to die by suicide.
  • Healer - The FL was abused by her first adoptive father. She cannot sleep in the same room as other people and has panic attacks when she sees violence.
  • The Princess Wei Young - The FL's family was massacred and her people were enslaved.
  • The Story of Ming Lan - Members of the FL's household made sure that the FL's mother (who held a weak position in the family) died in childbirth. The FL's behaviour / outlook on life were deeply affected by the incident.
  • Alchemy of Souls - The FL grew up mostly alone / partly raised to be an assassin to get revenge for her family members who were killed.
  • Hotel del Luna - The FL is basically cursed with immortality after a tragic incident involving the man she loved.
  • Moon Embracing the Sun - The FL is murdered (and resurrected), but I can't remember if the ML helps the FL deal with her situation at all or not.

The leads experienced the same traumatic event (at least in part):

  • Just Between Lovers - The ML and FL were both caught + lost family members in a tragic accident. Although the FL doesn't remember the entirety of the event due to a head injury, she still takes stairs rather than elevators due to a fear of enclosed spaces and has nightmares about losing her sister
  • The King's Affection - The  FL and ML witnessed the ML's father kill the FL's friend. The ML is not aware that his father also killed the FL's brother, resulting in her being forced to take her brother's place.
  • I Hear Your Voice - The ML and FL both witness the ML's father's murder. The FL testified against the murderer in court - putting a target on her back.
  • Come and Hug Me - The ML's father murders the FL's parents and nearly murders both of them as well. They are separated after the incident. When they meet again as adults, the FL still has PTSD / panic attacks due to the incident.

Begin Again

Love Is Science (not particularly severe trauma, but it does impact her decisions and avoidances)

About equal importance between FL and ML trauma (arguably FL's is emphasized more)

Forcasting Love and Weather (not really secret trauma though, nor does it take center stage throughout)

We spend a significant amount of time on the FL's trauma in (but the ML's lead is also prevalent and is perhaps the most emphasized)

It's Okay, That's Love

Still watching but i think Sing Again would count: https://mydramalist.com/688587-sing-again (but i dont think you can consider it secret)

The Long Ballad definitely seems to count, but again, not really secret to anyone who knows her identity: https://mydramalist.com/53953-princess-changge

The first one that I thought of was Eve (2022). Major FL past trauma.

Naked Fireman - FL's parents died when she was young

I've seen more of these than I thought! Thanks folks.

In addition...

Both have their own traumas:

  • Mars
  • Kingyo Club
  • Lost
  • Heart to Heart
  • Chocolate

  • My Secret Romançe
  • Be Melodramatic
  • Celebrity
