Officially, Shui Long Yin is said to embody the chivalrous ethics thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, reflecting the ideal of "balancing unworldliness & worldliness", and "benefiting the world." We surmise, Zhou Di Tower likely represents the Confucian role in educating and cultivating individuals.
In the preview, Zhou Di Tower leaves two significant imprints on Tang Lici: the Three Character Primer (San Zi Jing) and the flute. the Three Character Primer is a foundational Confucian text for early childhood education, while Zhou Di Tower is steeped in a rich musical atmosphere. This combination evokes the Confucian tradition of "education through rites and music."
For more information:
During the Zhou Dynasty, China formed the "Ritual and Music System," where every aspect of social life was accompanied by corresponding ceremonies. The belief was that rituals paired with music could subtly guide and regulate people's behavior, even improve personal cultivation.
The renowned Chinese philosopher Confucius inherited this idea, advocating that a gentleman (junzi) should always practice ritual norms and enhance self-cultivation through music. Thus, the Confucian method of nurturing a gentleman included the "six arts": rites, music, archery, carriage driving, calligraphy, and mathematics, collectively known as the "Six Skills of a Gentleman."
Returning to the drama, the young and untamed Tang Lici, may also cultivate his character through the study of the Three Character Primer and music. Through these, he takes his first steps toward understanding "humanity" and "human nature". As for the more complex aspects of human emotions, they await his personal exploration and experience.
