Ji Chang wook or  Kim Mu Yeol or Lee Soo Hyuk

Ji Chang Wook (Gogukcheon) most likely. He plays an honorable and competent king whose death in history is the catalyst. They also seem to depict him as the male lead.

Lee Soo Hyuk (Balgi)  is definitely the antagonist. He is the most logical successor of Gogukcheon but Woo will be against this and support Sansang.

Kim Mu Yeol (Prime Minister Eulpaso) will likely next to Woo have the most screentime when the succession crisis breaks out. Definitely very important.

Kang Young Seok who plays Sansang would in general have been the logical choice if you go by history. However despite being a key character he is just in the support cast.

Female oriented drama, so no big scope for male main leads... It's just a political history drama. If we say Ji Chang-wook his character will dies, Lee Soo Hyuk character is married and he is the villain, Kim mu yeol character is the prime minister and one of the protector of the throne.

Lee Soo Hyuk, Kim Mu Yeol is likely to get more screen time but not as main leads.

With the way the synopsis is suggesting this show is about Ji Changwooks death, I'm guessing this will be a show that starts with his death and then we jump to the past or get a bunch of flashbacks explaining his relationship with Jeon Jongseo and how it affected her trying to put a new person on the throne! I don't think they'll go against history and take the criticism that comes with that so i think we will see a lot of the other male leads doing what makes sense in their positions because its important for the plot and they're relevant to the history probably, but I think the second King she marries will show up around the end as a "we all knew he was going to show up but it was worth watching how we got here" way

Why didn't Ji play the 4th prince's character?   The drama would have been better.

Right ! But 4th prince is just like puppet 😂 .... The only prince who feared everyone and a strong one is Go Nam Mu...

The main character is actually Queen Woo, but unfortunately the actress who plays her is not suitable. On the other hand, the real attraction of this drama is JCW, but unfortunately he is only a supporting actor (in reality). the one in the first episode had to die. Bad casting is the reason this drama's rating is not optimal.

Yes, the deceased king was the wisest among the five princes.  The youngest prince is like his 2nd brother but he is not as smart as his brother in terms of strategies.

The king died too young.  As long as he lived, the five tribes submitted to the crown.  Which probably why his father sent him to guard the North to harden him up.

I don't think the cast was bad at all in fact I find them fitting well. The problem simply is that fans of JCW are offended that he was the one not surviving, that's all it is. But what can we do, Korea is a place of such obsessive people...

The only thing that I consider as the reason to the decline in rating is the choice of the director to not include the last battle scene and a fleshed out epilogue. To an extent it was mitigated for some for the novelty of it being the first 3 minutes of the first episode.

Still even I would have rated the show less than 5 for such a blunder, if my expectations had not already been turned so low, after reading comments here. But still I tried, because opinion was so polarizing here, so I watched it out of curiosity, not essentially finding the next best drama.

The series deserved the epic battle scene for at least 10+ minutes of screen time. The decision to not include it is not just baffling but utterly childish.

I enjoyed this drama regardless of the famous actor having died too early.

I hope the K-directors will come up with more dramas like this.
