My Ossan's Love Ranking

"Old men need love too."

Ossan's Love (Old Man's Love) is an over the top and ridiculous Japanese BL Romcom with multiple installments, spin-offs and remakes.

It's mostly a chaotic funny mess to laugh unseriously but it also hides many positive lessons about love, specially maturer older love.

The cast is lovely and charming and every once in a while deliver heart touching emotional moments.

Avoid if you're not used to Japanese Comedy and can't handle mature themes.

  • Ossan's Love: In the Sky

    1. Ossan's Love: In the Sky

    Japanese Drama - 2019, 8 episodes

    10

An alternate universe that is much fluffier and sweeter. The new cast is as memorable and likeable as the other cast. I'm keeping them all ❤️

In this universe, Haruta and Kurosawa are much cuter and sweeter. The ending twist was very pleasing and finally did justice to the series name.

"Old men need love too" - Ossan's Love 2016 Trailer

Extra points for going even bolder with the age gap themes. Perfectly executed in a sweet, lighthearted and funny way.

  • Ossan’s Love: LOVE or DEAD

    2. Ossan’s Love: LOVE or DEAD

    Japanese Movie - 2019

    10

The Second part of the HaruMaki arch as over the top and chaotic as always.

This movie hides a very deep message about loving people before they go, either because of death or because they might need to go away to chase their passions and dreams. They might also "go" because they might change into someone different as time goes by.

This movie repeats some old conflicts but also introduce new conflicts to test HaruMaki's love. It was a literal deadly trial by fire.

Justice-kun is a perfect kawaii addition to the cast.

  • Ossan's Love

    3. Ossan's Love

    Japanese Drama - 2018, 7 episodes

    10

The first part of the HaruMaki arch and the first remake of the original 2016 movie.

The series greatly expanded on the original premise and gave us a lovely and chaotic cast to spend time with and laugh a lot.

I love the many wholesome themes and hidden messages this show about different forms of love besides the cute and heart touching emotional moments.

  • Ossan's Love

    4. Ossan's Love

    Japanese Special - 2016, 1 episode

    10

    Original 2016 Short Movie.

The original deserves recognition as the pioneer that started this whole mess.

I's a nice quick laugh but it isn't as charming and memorable as a standalone title without the rest of the franchise.

It's a shame this is all we'll ever get from Haru x Hase.

Extra points pioneering bisexual awakening themes in a positive light. (in the context of this franchise, I know it's not the first series to talk about this)

  • Ossan's Love: In The Sky Special

    5. Ossan's Love: In The Sky Special

    Japanese Special - 2019, 2 episodes

    10

Simply some extra bonus content for Naruse x Shino shippers.

I wish this was extra Haruta x Kurosawa content after finally getting into a relationship.
All we got was Haruta ditching Kurosawa at Christmas' Eve.

Since the original universe already explores a hetero age gap between Choko and Maro this was a missed opportunity to explore a BL age gap.
