What To Watch When You Want Something Outside The Box

The School Nurse Files is definitely different than other dramas out there. The FL is a school nurse who can see jellies, which are physical representations of human desires. She fights the jellies using a toy light stick. Oh and Nam Joo Hyuk is in it, doing his best to look like a dumpy teacher with the style sense of his grandpa. He has special energy that gives the nurse a boost when she's fighting jellies.  - u/caninedesign

Hot Stove League - features the office staff and inner workings of a baseball team. There's no romance, serial killers, mysteries, action...but still the story and acting was amazing. This is a good drama to binge watch because you won't be able to stop thinking about it. A new manager comes in and starts changing things and it's interesting to see how relationships change and people grow because of it. You do not need to know anything about baseball at all.  - u/caninedesign

Are You Human Too? - Ever seen an actor play double roles where one is a robot and one is a human and ace them both?! I think this drama was something different in terms of the human vs robot aspect, it was a lot more than fighting over money and love. For me this drama was about how love can even change a robot's already in-built personality, I know it sounds absurd when you put it like that but it's actually a great and "something different" drama when you watch it. Oh, and the ending is definitely something out of the box!  - u/Fatooz

Happiness - I'm someone who usually doesn't enjoy the zombie genre, but this drama was much more than just a zombie thriller, heck even the zombies were something different. Without giving much details, my reasoning to include this in "something out of the box" would be the way the "zombies" were written, the main characters and a trope that you actually wouldn't see coming but once it hits you, you'll actually love it the most in this drama. - u/Fatooz

Lovestruck in the City - Probably the only drama so far that gave me major indie vibes. Why I think it's out of the box, I think the whole interview question format, the flashbacks, the way the relationship development happens, it's all quite different. At times it might get a little frustrating for you but then after sometime you might even find it very matured to the point where you actually understand the characters. Also, the cinematography and soundtrack are so breathtaking. So yes, definitely recommended! - u/Fatooz

Memories of the Alhambra - This is a sci-fi thriller where the ML wants to buy a game and wants to meet the game developer but the developer is missing and so the ML starts playing the game in search of the developer. However, as he starts playing the game he keeps finding loopholes and some errors in the game. I think this definitely fits in for something out of the box, it had a very "different" vibe overall, especially with the game aspect. If you're a gamer you'll understand a few things that went unnoticed by most and also the ML's "crazy" character and even though at some point the writing gets a little sloppy, it's definitely something different from other sci-fi dramas. - u/Fatooz

Yumi's Cells - It's definitely out of the box, ever seen live animation in KDramas? Ever seen "cells" that somehow are responsible for the way you function everyday? Or "cells" that are responsible for the things you say and do and the way you react? This drama is basically about this girl Yumi and her cells and it's the cutest yet matured dramas I've seen in a while. The live animations are done so well you'll end up loving this drama majorly for them and then the relationships feel so real and relatable. Perfect for this theme! - u/Fatooz

Circle - Features two different time periods, 2017 and 2037. The structure sets it apart: Each of the 12 episodes is composed of two half hour portions, generally the first portion is set in 2017 and then you switch after a half hour to 2037. Two stories that eventually tie in together. 2037 also has a parallel-world vibe since part takes place in a slum-like dystopian SK and part on a technically advanced island where the ruling class lives.  - u/LcLou02

Vincenzo - This Song Joong-Ki , Jeon Yeo-been and OK taec-yeon starrer deserves to be on this list. Not only is the plot refreshing but gripping too. Romance is a subplot in the narrative as Mystery and Action take centre-stage. It has a lot of Humour as well. Its worth the watch if you want to see something interesting. Plot- An Italian consigliere comes back to Korea in order to extract gold artifacts and bars worth billions which he and his secretary had hid beneath a building named Geumga Plaza. He soon gets involved in the lives of the people living there and soon finds himself fighting to protect them.  - u/Patient_Schedule_573

Extraordinary You - ah, i can finally recommend my favorite kdrama! this drama is basically about characters in a manhwa gaining sentience and trying to escape the world their writer made for them. i absolutely love this drama and the plot twists it brings. it’s also includes a pretty funny parody of the “boys over flowers” genre  - u/intelligentMoodie

The Sound of Magic - I don't remember watching any other musical kdrama other than this one and it was so well done. The cinematography was magical, the soundtrack was so beautiful and everyone's vocals were so nice, the performances were great and I loved how they fit the story in 6 episodes. A short and magical drama that will make you believe in magic by the end of it!  - u/Fatooz

Shooting Stars - There are plenty dramas that focus on the struggles and hardships of idols/actors but this one's quite unique in the sense that its main focus is on the PR department and the reporters and even lawyers within the agency. The writing was nice and the characters were endearing with their own set of hardships and heartfelt stories.  - u/Fatooz
