  • The Princess Wei Young

    1. The Princess Wei Young

    Chinese Drama - 2016, 54 episodes

    7.5

    Status: Completed

Entertaining first half, rather boring and cliched second half. Wei Young started as likable female lead but turned out to be a damsel in distress in the second one. What was nice is that the main couple's relationship was healthy and they had nice chemistry.

    2. Love Me If You Dare

    Chinese Drama - 2015, 24 episodes

The cases are boring and so is the female lead, might get back into it for the male lead but not yet, a low priority on-hold/high-priority drop

  • The Fortress

    3. The Fortress

    Korean Movie - 2017

    6.5

    Status: Completed

Watched with my family, the movie didn't try to be a war spectacle like other movies but rather to show the "behind the scenes" on those. However I thought the plot was lacking in some ways and it had some draggy parts. I liked what it tried to portray but it could've been handled better.

  • Parasite

    4. Parasite

    Korean Movie - 2019

One of my favorite movies of all time. Starts out slow but doesn't fail to catch the audiences attention, steadily building up tension and absolutely delivering starting from the big plot-twist, further ending up in a big bloody spectacle. Lots of hidden meanings and hints all over the movie. The ending couldn't have been better!

A cute but forgettable drama. Simple mystery plot that wasn't really groundbreaking but watchable. Liked the leads' chemistry but things got kinda boring when they started dating.

Wished for more screentime for the friend trio with the bf, Rowoon and the guitar boy :/

This was a very creative mini drama, I loved how it was designed like a dating sim even if it might be corny lol, the idea is pretty unique. Also it got angstier as it went on, you could've made a whole drama out of the Zuho/Chani story. I also loved how Hwiyoung was that radio guy appearing in every episode xD

I hate how these "dark" school k-dramas try to be something but don't actually try but rather stay generic af. The first two eps were decent but after it the tension/dark atmosphere just disappered and became a lame friendship story depicting a mere club activity or something. Don't even get me started on the conclusion. Yeah I knew it wouldn't be a White Christmas but still it was disappointing.

The acting was mostly bad, except for Seo Ji Hoon, who deserved more scenes. His acting was the most believable, the rest was just as interesting as an empty sheet of paper, especially the lead girl...

WE NEED MORE KDRAMAS LIKE THIS!

Okay I'm sorry for screaming but this was like really REALLY good. I already like all the characters for not being annoying, but intelligent & strong. JJH is the MVP here honestly, can't imagine a better Lee Chang. Part of why I liked this character is surely due to his acting.

The other members of the squad are also interesting, can't wait to see Bae Doo Na as Seo Bi kicking some (dead) ass in S2. And Young Shin kinda grew on me, who else thinks the actor playing him is charismatic?

A minor complaint would be that it's too short to give the full score, but yeah S2 incoming~~!!

    K-Drama 101 starterpack:

    - female lead acting like a 4 year old also high-pitched screaming every two minutes
    - male lead being a jerk for no reason other than having a childhood trauma
    - evil parents
    - bff played by park jinjoo
    - last minute break-up with a year timeskip
    - love-triangle with a second male lead whose sole purpose is to initiate some conflicts between the lead couple
    - lead girl blaming herself for stuff she didn't do, noble idiocy

I could go on counting more but I'm stopping now. Anyways I skipped a lot stuff in the second half as it was unbearably boring. I only started this for the double role plot but it was a waste of time tbh :/

That blonde Jung Hae In btw lmaoo they did this boy dirty

  • Nirvana in Fire

    17. Nirvana in Fire

    Chinese Drama - 2015, 54 episodes

This is that kind of drama that makes you feel all kinds of emotions. It pulls on your heartstrings, it is crushing and heartbreaking but also makes you happy in some way.

You could really tell the writers were well-versed and knew what they were doing. The story was mostly conveyed by rich and interesting dialogue. And I don't really think it was hard to flow, in fact I was immersed to it most of the time. The ending brought everything together, I think it was pretty satisfying although I wished the drama was longer.

Fantasy elements aside, this drama was very raw and realistic to me. Characters felt like real people and were complex and didn't just consist of one trope/plot device. There was no good or evil, just different shades of gray and all kinds of human traits. And all of the characters were well-written. The most outstanding one was Mei Chang Su, what a legend. I won't ever forget this name even if it's not his real one. One of the rare occasions where I really felt like a character is of way higher intellect than me. You have to be as smart as your characters to write like this, which is why we don't have many of his likes. Most of the time a drama tries to make its character appear smart I just roll my eyes but here I can only clap in approval lmao

    Overall an outstanding, unforgettable drama.

This was a well-made romantic mystery/thriller with splendid acting, directing and OST. Loved the tension between the characters in the four episodes building up to the murder. The murder mystery was handled well and I liked the reveal, it was expected but made sense.

I know many people disliked the ending, but I thought it was a fitting conclusion. I mean did y'all really expect some happy marriage stuff here smh. A great thing was how the drama tackled a lot of social issues such as infidelity and marital problems, gender inequality, workplace issues, social injustice and probably more, while it wasn't necessarily the main focus.

Loved the relationship between Go Hye Ran and Han Ji Won, I want more of those dramas where two strong independent woman put their beef aside and work together and *boom* world domination.

However I thought there were some writing issues in the crime/investigation department (useless detective guy) and some awkwardly written characters too (Ha Myung Woo anyone?). I wasn't as emotionally invested into the otp/husband character as others, but maybe that's because I'm more of an observing type of watcher than an emotional one when it comes to morally ambiguous dramas.

Okay so I might be in the minority here but I prefered this season to the last one. Everyone seemed more mature and I loved seeing them all grown up like that. Also for obvious reasons of course (finally I am on the right ship for once). The otp was super cute at the end and the secondary otp too, I loved how much closure we got on everyone and no timeskip break-up stuff. WE LOVE TO SEE IT

I really tried to love this drama but it didn't work - at least not until the end. While I liked the beginning and the inspiring first half full of lovable chracters and their friendship the rest of it wasn't nearly as good. The second half was a typical business/makjang drama in disguise and felt like a whole different drama. It was full of stupid plot-twists, plot-conveniences that came out of nowhere, asspulls etc etc.

I absolutely detested the romance, Saeroyi and Yi Seo had zero chemistry and frankly I didn't like Yi Seo at all once she changed to Saeroyi's whiny, needy teen cheerleader. Sadly the drama focused almost only on romance for the last 4-5 eps andI had to force myself through the timeskip part. Also skip-watched some of the romance scenes (ewwww).

Liked the acting by Park Seo Joon, while I always liked him in his romcoms I wasn't quite impressed with him. This time he really outdid himself! The best actor however was the one playing the villain, Yoo Jae Myung (he played that grandpa while being younger than my dad omg). Also Ahn Bo Hyun surprised me, I didn't think much of him in HPL but this time he was really good at playing an asshole.

Also no matter what the true winner is Oh Soo Ah. I would take Park Bo Gum over PSJ or anyone any day xD (as long as his character isn't in a cult lmao). on a serious note, I think people really misunderstood her character, I thought she was the most well-written one and Nara certainly nailed it. Looking forward to your next drama queen <3

I really enjoyed this drama overall, way more than I thought I would! The storyline never felt slow for me and kept my interest until the end. Loved the OST too~

What was really interesting is how the show dealt with it's romance line, there were some unexpected results for sure...but the best girl got together with Tak Goo so I'm glad xD Some characters took unexpected turns and I honestly thought it was an interesting choice...I wished there was more romance though and more Tak Goo/Ma Jun scenes :(

I admit that Yoon Shi Yoon's acting was not that good, like the overdone expressions and the awkward voice sometimes but it still had a weird charm to it? xD I liked his character and he was really cute. Joo Won's acting however was really good, can't believe this was his first drama o: a very strong debut for sure!

What left me conflicted is how this show glorified Tak Goo's parents, like both of them were kinda trashy for me. The father/president treated his wife like trash and her kids too and slept with another woman, got her pregnant and thought it was ok? And it's due to him that Ma Jun turned out like that...and the mother with her holier than thou attidude ugh girl you're still a homewrecker (I really missed this actress though, rest in peace).

Still an enjoyable drama with interesting twists and turns and some intriguing characters :)

    + Woo Do Hwan looks/voice <3
    + Jang Hyuk acting,
+ OST/production quality (Bang Won's theme is fire)
    + occasional bromance

    - Useless romance and FL
    - Wasn't invested into most characters, especially the main character was unlikable to me; main characters kinda felt out of place like as if they were filler characters they had barely any impact to the actual political scene
    - wasn't really satisfied with the lead actor's performance, I don't really think he was a good fit to play an emotionally disturbed but heroic character as he had barely any charisma, also he had that slightly anxious/worried expression all the time (someone like PSJ would've done well in this role imo)
    - also in historical k-dramas why do they always insert a stupid cheerleader gang for the gags?? smh I'm glad SFD didn't have one
    - Predictable, weak script: tries to seem smart and sophisticated but I don't really think the dialogues and conflicts had the same impact or depth as in NiF, QSD or SFD for example

There was a lot wrong with this, but I just wanted to say how much I loved the development of Moon Ga Young's character. She got the most spotlight and I almost felt like we're seeing things out of her prespective bc I disliked the leads so much. They were a straight-out boring mary sue+gary stu couple and also had that useless parents story going on ugh.

Also loved Min Jae's character, Se Joo <3 Glad both of them ended up together otherwise I would've thrown a fit.

Best romance/thriller drama I've ever watched.

What I really loved about this drama is how the relationship between Hyun Soo and Ji Won prevailed throughout the story as the main focus of the drama overall. The crime plot was the foundation of Hyun Soo's human struggles and his relationship to his family. Their story unfolded beautifully.

That being said it doesn't mean the crime plot is any less good. While I'm sadly way too good at predicting crime plots (I don't even watch thrillers these days bc nothing ever surprises me). While this one also had some predictable moments, I thought overall it was well thought-out and didn't leave any loose ends. It doesn't ever drag, lose its focus or disappoint.

What I liked is that the drama didn't forget about its secondary mains. Moo Jin was always there to lighten up the mood. He redeemed himself throughout the story and so did Hae Soo.

Needless to say, the acting was amazing. I mean it's Lee Joon Gi. But everyone else also did a great job.

Watchable but nothing new or mindblowing. The mystery was predictable tbh. Probably not a drama that will stay on my mind for a long time. Also the 2nd ML was pretty useless, just a plot device.
However, what was really memorable was the villain. I've seen the actress in many dramas before like as the mom in Reply, Iljimae or Chief Kim but this is the first time I saw her an antagonist and she was impressive. Also I liked the relationship between the mom and Woojoo, although I wished there was more of it towards the end <3

Interesting premise ruined by juvenile crime/investigation story. Just another romcom that uses fantasy/thriller elements to spice up its mediocrity and takes itself way too seriously.

I couldn't take that plot seriously at all given that it was messy, uninspired and had the lamest villain ever (also that every lawyer in this series practices law in a way that makes me question how they passed the bar exam). The romcom part didn't do it for me as well, since the couple had no chemistry. Basically the drama did everything wrong that Pinocchio did right (why is Pinocchio rated lower than this borefest??)

The best thing was Jung Hae In hehe such a cutie <3 He's especially good looking here imo, it's definitely the formal uniform

  • Do You Like Brahms?

    42. Do You Like Brahms?

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    8.0

Started out as comfy, sweet but slightly melancholic drama with a promising start. The realistic set up was kinda unique and I loved the classical music, slice of life vibes and the slow burn romance. Oh and the OST <3

However the second half was not nearly as good with pointlessly dragged out conflicts and repetitive drama. I hated how almost everyone instantly became selfish and annoying, even Song Ah was a shadow of her initial character at times. It felt like those old korean melodrama, just angsty for NO real reason. I mean I'm a sucker for angst, heck FoE was angsty as hell and became one of my favs. My Mister was realistic and depressing and is my all time fav! However this one was a perfect example for angst done wrong.

Still overall I loved this drama a lot which is why I can't really rate it lower than 8, especially since it ended on such a satisfying note and of course because of Kim Min Jae who did a great job as Joon Young. I loved this character, he's definitely joining my "unproblematic male leads who deserve rights" list lmao if I'll ever make one. Hope Min Jae has a new project soon! '<3

  • One Spring Night

    43. One Spring Night

    Korean Drama - 2019, 32 episodes

    9.0

This was a very unique, raw and heartfelt drama and also a mature, realistic take on modern vs traditional asian dating culture.

I loved how the majority of the dramatic tension was conveyed through the dialogue and directing instead of relying on overdramatic acting or intense music. The characters albeit being flawed and imperfect felt very real and well-written. Another point was the acting, it was very convincing in a realistic way. I didn't even feel like watching a drama it felt like I'm watching real people lol. Also it may not have been a suspense-packed ride but it made me feel emotionally invested into it and managed to keep my interest until the end, which is the most important thing.

My only gripe is the love at the first sight thingy, I think the start of the relationship between the leads could've been more convincing. But still didn't distract my from enjoying this great piece of work <3

I had started this drama years ago but dropped after the timeskip happened. Since viki added this to their selection I thought I could as well watch it while doing other stuff to check if it gets any better.

Anyways this was one of the most anticlimatic and boring dramas I've ever watched. Like it's so melodramatic and over-angsted to the core but actually nothing (absolutely nothing!) ever happens. I guess it was supposed to be character-driven but they just weren't interesting for me. I enjoy flawed or conflicted characters but only if they're written well/interestingly. Here they were unrealistic and plain annoying. For the second half I skipped a lot to get to the ending faster since it was so pointless.

I remember having started this at some point in 2012 for the OST back then bc I loved Super Junior so much lol and have to say that "It Has To Be You" by Yesung is still a great listen <3

What a sad joke this was. My complaints:

    - Extremely irritating main duo. FL can't act to save her life, ML constantly repeated the same three things that were "you bastard", "i will kill you" and "i will rip you in pieces".
    - Mediocre and super predictable plot that feels like a middle school writing project of some 12 year old.
    - Preachy to the point it made my earls bleed. Yes killing is bad and killers are monsters, I got it. Anything else to say? There was some psychological stuff but it felt superficial and immature.
    - how could you unironically write an ending like this?? That could've been straight out of Corpse Party. Just felt like a bad joke and contradicted the narrative they had built up before.

The only enjoyable thing past the first couple episodes was whenever Kim Jae Wook as Mo Tae Gu was on the screen, I mean he was my only reason for watching anyways but wow, this man can act and basically outacted and overshadowed everyone else in this drama. If not for him I would've probably rated it even lower (probably wouldn't even have started it in first place.).

Not really impressed by this one. While story-wise it had some intriguing mystery ongoing at the beginning, this drama definitely had its fair share of plot conveniences, convenient and questionable practice of law, dumb decisions, filler scenes, spoon-feeding and irritating characters (especially the ML) that dragged it down for me. The addition of two more episodes weren't needed imo, they just made it draggier. I think I actually enjoyed the "Prison Break" part way more, it had some thrilling moments at least.

Acting-wise for me the one who stood out the most was the one behind the antagonist. Maybe it's just not my style, but I think JS was really overacting in this role. The excessive screaming almost added an unintentional comedic undertone to some scenes. Idk I used to love his acting in KMHM and Secret, hopefully it's just this role.

This drama was a disturbing, uncomfortable to the core watch - and I loved every second of it! I applaud everyone who worked on this drama. I totally didn't expect it to be this mindblowing!

This might sound weird but to me it kinda felt like it could've been straight up out of a Kafka novel but paired with a horror twist. The extremely subjective first person narrative, the abnormal behavior of everyone and the gaslighting kinda reminded me of "The Judgement" and "Amerika", the drama even referenced "The Metamorphosis". That might be where the writer/webtoonist got their inspiration from lol.

Actingwise I was really impressed by Shiwan, everyone knows how good of an actor he is but he showed again that he excels at playing twisted characters. Also LDW's best acting performance! Tbh I prefer this role so much over the red haired fox guy one. Lee Jung Eun was especially outstanding, this woman is the epitome of talent

I don't know how one can watch this drama unironically and think it's a masterpiece. It was one of the most inconsistent and repetitive series I've ever watched. So many plotholes, messily written characters, dumb excuses, cheap cop-outs, patriotism fanservice etc. And it basically overused the same formula over 28 hours, like 1. get arrested 2. tortured 3. GAKSITAAAL 4. escape 5. rinse and repeat. My serious score would be something along 3-4 lmao

However I watched it for the laughs and since it was soooo ridiculously overdramatic I managed to enjoy it to some extent. Shunji was damn entertaining, he''s one of the most insonsistently written characters I've seen, but so hilariously bad that he's already good. Overall ridiculous mess/10

    - the first half although unrealistic/cliched was very endearing and cute
    - the main characters were likeable, they looked cute together (alhough needed better development imo)
    - North Korea scenes, like the sense of adventure and exploring NK & the ahjumma gang <3
    - the ducklings!! <3 My fav one was Chi Soo but they all were totally adorable especially their dynamics with Seri
    - the character development of Gu Seung Jun and Seo Dan and their scenes together
    - the touching story of "The Rat" and ML's brother
    - scenery was beautiful

    The useless/ the bad:

    - development of main couple was too fast in the beginning and too repetitive in the second half; the SK part generally really dropped in quality, switzerland connection felt out of place
    - the last four episodes were extremely overangsted and uselessly melodramatic, made me lose all my interest in the main couple
    - the extreme overdramatized slow-motion shots of the mains almost dying
    - the bad excuse of ending they had for the secondary couple, why did GSJ have to die dammit??? fy writers (I will forever be bitter about this crap)
    - villains were cliched, cartoony and badly written
    - PPL!!
