  • Reply 1988

    2. Reply 1988

    Korean Drama - 2015, 20 episodes

    10

A masterpiece slice of life drama. Hyeri is a late teen growing up in a poor neighbourhood alleyway alongside her siblings. Her alleyway is full of wonderfully warm characters. It is all about the small details, the relationships, bonds, shared poor existence, and how a community bonds and stands together, all done in a 80’s backdrop. It wonderfully portrays Korea at that time, poor and growing, with slices of popular music and fashions of the times and world outlook. It celebrates the collective and embraces their indviduality in a beautiful thoughtful way. Each episode is a huge 1hr 40min with 20 eps it really is long but every second is rewarding with it’s depth, togerthness, bonds, struggles of life, portrayal of Korean habits, yearnings, blossoming youth and aspirations within the confines of their given environment and social status. A veritable masterpiece.

Wonderfully different take on a drama. A woman has ‘cells’ which are like cartoon teddy bears who are her emotions, love, hate, pride etc, and we get to see cut ways of this cartoon world throughout. The real depth and charm of this drama apart from her great acting and sweetness/cuteness was the absolutely wonderful charming cartoon emotion reactions segmented throughout each episode which brought a wonderful depth and analysis to this drama and a heap of charm, aegyo and interest in every second despite the overarching obviousness at times.

He develops a disease where he can’t see peoples faces but still sees hers at times. It is both charming and sweet. Both the male and female leads are very affable and sweet and really make this drama.

Astonshingly beautiful drama that  delves deeply into a tragic story of Uee and her travails. The drama is intense in its portrayal realistically looking at the downs and emotions of the moments, and her emotional journey is hard hitting and powerful. It tears you up and explores peoples position and journey in life in such a delicate profound way. Wonderful.
