Utada spent much of their childhood between New York and Tokyo, always influenced by the world of music thanks to their father and mother. During their childhood, groups like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, The Police, and Dr. Dre were the ones that would leave a mark on them and their music style. At 13, Toshiba-EMI contacted Utada to write pop songs in Japanese, which they would then release on their first and most successful album, First Love, at the age of 16 in 1999.
Utada was previously married to Italian bartender Francesco Calianno (2014-2018) and photographer and film director Kazuaki Kiriya (2002- 2007). They have a son born on July 3, 2015, with Francesco.
On June 26, 2021, Utada came out as non-binary in an Instagram livestream.
