When he was young he played in numerous wuxia movies and TV series. He is mainly known for his role as Aga's stepfather in the movie "Cape No. 7" that won him Best Supporting Actor at the 45th Golden Horse Awards in 2008, and for his role of the triad leader Geta in the movie "Monga", that won him the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2011 Chinese Film Media Awards. He was married with Taiwanese actress Pei Hsiao Lan.
In 2019, Ma died in the Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in Taipei, where he was admitted to treat an infection.
