Lee Sung Mi is a South Korean comedian and host. She graduated from Dongnae Girls' High School and later obtained a bachelor's degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Seoul Arts College. She made her debut in 1980 when she participated in TBC's comedy contest. She frequently appeared on EBS's "Ding Dong Dang Kindergarten" so her jokes were mostly about children. She is seen as a strict and even scary senior comedian and she has had confrontations with several junior comedians like Kim Sook or Jung Seon Hee because of her old-school ways of doing things. In 1988, she was in a relationship with singer Kim Hak Rae and had a child with him in 1989 but could not get married because her father opposed and they broke up. She raised her son as a single mother until she married her current husband and had two more daughters with him. Kim apologized to her 21 years later when he wrote a public apology in 2010 but her life as a single mother was full of rumors and gossip and that took a toll on his son, who resented his mother for several years because of how she raised him. She discovered Shin Dong Yup and made SBS sign him as a comedian. She is a devout Christian and even convinced Jo Hye Ryun to join the religion. She currently appears as a guest on variety shows and occasionally as an MC on religious channels.
