A modern retake on a C drama youthful romance
I’ve seen a lot of C drama high school romance and I really like the modernization on this version. You don’t really have that super shy girl anymore. I really appreciate making the FL lead really strong and dress actually cute!
The Casting is super baby, you got the leading pair in their early twenties (21 and 23) and so there are a lot of fresh faces to see. I can see the FL becoming the new fan favorite among the female actresses in China, so watch out.
The drama is pretty typical in your high school C drama troupe with the rag-tag team of best friends. It’s a coming-of-age drama with a mixture of slice of life kind of writing. When you start out the drama, they make sure you know the couple ends up together, so the story is really about the leads falling in love.
I liked the paring up couples in this drama, you get a lot of the second couple, where their storyline is a little more angsty and emotional, unlike the main couple. But they do throw in a BL story romance. As much as a BL romance can be in a C drama. I haven’t seen that before.
Since the main couple have a very cute and simple relationship there isn’t much angst and the main story is focused on the little story arcs throughout the drama. Some of the arcs can be a little silly, but this is a C drama and I do feel like censorship is at it’s highest. Who complains about wanting your kid to be a computer programmer instead of entrepreneur? Or the fact the kids in the class can’t participate in a basketball game because they have to study? Yes, it’s a little silly, but that’s what you get for C dramas.
So with that said, at times the pacing can be a little slow, but once you get to the part where they kids go to college, I feel like the pacing ramps up a bit and to my surprise there is a little more angst. It’s a little frustrating to see the leads go through hardships (since that hasn’t been the tone or pacing of the show), but I was pretty glued to those episodes.
Overall, a good C drama high school romance with a strong female lead that actually dresses cute. So a win in my opinion.
