where housing is too expensiveNot sure how you stumbled upon my profile, but welcome! I'm a busy yet boring person who will always make time for Asian TV and cinema.
Have been hyperfixating on a different hobby since about August 2023 so relatively inactive to be honest, but plan to return and catch-up one day!
Expect random list updates as I recall things and add notes to old entries on the dropped list (reminding myself why I dropped them).
The basics
I generally prefer Japanese dramas. I pretend to be an elitist for fun; in reality, I watch whatever entertains me. Lately, Korean dramas have filled that hole because I often don't have to think and can just let run in the background or while doing something else like chores. But if I am watching dramas for the sake of dramas, then I become picky and probably overthink things because I want to be in the right mood to appreciate them...
I don't watch a lot of films because I often lack the time to properly focus on them uninterrupted. I hope to change that in the future.
Drama-watching habits
I'm often a:
- RAW watcher (Mandarin>>Korean>Japanese in terms of listening comprehension)
- fast-forwarder or x1.5-1.75-speed-watcher (applies to stuff I will likely rate 7.0 or below).
- manga/source purist (critical of all adaptations... I've read a ton of manga...)
I am also the type to drop a series despite having only a few more episodes left. If I constantly fail to muster the motivation to finish a drama after repeated attempts, then I rather not waste my time (even if it means I can't add more entries to my 'Completed' list). At the same time, I sometimes can't bring myself to watch the last episodes of something I enjoy because I don't want it to end. You probably cannot tell the difference because there are some mediocre ones that I do want to give a chance.
How I rate
Ratings are given independently of other dramas/films for the most part (in order words, rating =/= ranking // I don't rate thinking about works I've given similar ratings to). I consider the execution of what I perceive to be the work's aims and goals (e.g., if the full potential was reached in its specific genre) and sometimes factor in how much I enjoyed it. I do give extra half-points just for having a good cast or standout component like the soundtrack and will re-rate as my standards change.
- 5 and below: terrible, but I usually never manage to complete/rate these
- 6 - 6.5: barely watchable
- 7.0 - 7.5: okay / not bad / wasn't a huge waste of time
- Note: I've given 7.5 to many series/films that I really did genuinely enjoy / it's not a bad rating!
- 8.0 - 8.5: good or very good, or at least I managed to like it more than usual
- 9.0 and above: has to be at least objectively great and worthy of watching or recommending
MDL activity + preferences
In my spare time on MDL, I used to try to update biographies of rookies (or the unrecognised) and cast details, along with adding titles I'm watching but are missing and whatnot. Lately, there's just no time for that, unfortunately.
Always on the lookout for LGBTQ+ dramas and films. I watch all genres but sitcoms and I do enjoy variety shows, no matter how cheesy.
I have a soft spot for:
- female cops
- childhood friends
- older female - younger male relationships (work, platonic, romantic, basically all of them)
- career women in general
- men crying
- food
- good soundtracks and cinematography (will watch even if the writing is crap)
I tend to find things to watch based on the cast and production staff rather than the premise.
Please read before sending a friend request:
I don't consistently or actively post on my own feed nor interact with others on their feed due to how I prioritize my time, but I do appreciate those who have accepted my friend requests and those who have sent them as I very much enjoy occasionally poking into others drama/film-watching activities and real-life updates (read: lurk ha!). However, I do not accept every request due to the picky curation of my feeds. I don't have anything against you or your drama-watching activity personally, but just that I feel it would be pointless for us to be "friends"/have access to each other's feeds if I am not interested in reading your updates while I rarely post myself.
