Typical PG-13 Jdrama...

I should have known better when I saw the PG-13 rating. Jdramas with 20-somethings tend to veer towards the cutesy and simple. It was empty calories. The female lead was such a Mary Sue that it was painful. The male lead was tortured and immature. You aren't missing anything if you don't watch this. It's like a piece of candy that dissolves quickly and leave no lasting impression. The acting was serviceable, but no award winning performances because the plot didn't demand it.

I have nothing more to add but I can't send the review until I reach a 500 length limit.

I need a Season 2 NOW!

I need a second season now! We’ve seen enemies-to-lovers step-brother trope in BL dramas before, but this drama feels more natural. The pace is slower and we really get a chance to get to know the leads. The dynamic between the two leads is perfection. Tian is bossy, but also takes such good care of Wang. And while Wang has a winsome boyishness, he’s more empathetic and in touch with his emotions, giving Tian permission to be more open.

Oh, it’s such a good series that I can’t wait for more!

it needs a season 2

There really needs to be a season 2 to give us more of the romance we long for. There are many directions for the series to go in.

I appreciated how thoughtfully they handled the daughter’s storyline because a lot of effort was made to see things from her point of view and add depth in those conversations rather than just being stereotypical.

I did expect that it would be a more toxic drama, but I was pleasantly surprised. I like that the female leads weren’t silly like in some dramas.

It was a disappointment.

This was a big disappointment after watching the anime version on Netflix. There's Gokushufudo (2020), another Japanese live version that is truer to the anime. This 2021 version was calming but lacked the characters and humor of the anime version. What we get are artistic, quiet homemaker instructional videos. There is no background to explain who the character is, why he's such a skilled homemaker, or what the actual point of the show is. Clearly it was a vanity project for the actor, Tsuda Kenjiro, who voices the anime version. If this was commissioned by Netflix then they completely missed the mark.

I haven't seen the Gokushufudo but it has to be better than this one. If you want a show to help you fall asleep then watch this version. Otherwise, go watch the anime and Japanese live version elsewhere.

I don't feel guilty dropping this drama...

I really tried to watch this drama because I enjoy Zhang Han and male-led ensemble series, but after a while it felt like a waste of my time. The initial premise of four male friends is pretty simple, but quickly became boring. I wanted to enjoy the enemies-to-lovers romance between Tong Yu (Zhang Han) and Xu Duo (Wang Xiao Chen), but her pettiness got on my nerves, and the whole group of them were very immature given that they are well into their late 30s. The other male leads weren't that interesting and so their romances dragged on.

The Korean drama, A Gentleman's Dignity, would be the closest comparison and I really enjoyed it years ago. Each of the leads had distinct differences and very different story arcs, but were all similarly successful.
