**Edited years later to reflect my changing tastes**
I started watching Korean dramas back in 2006. I only started watching Chinese dramas in 2019. Now, I’ve settled into a 50/50 mix. I tend to default to romcoms but I like most genres (if the storytelling is sound) but, lately, I've found that I often get bored of stories centered on romance. I'm reluctant to watch shows centered around food/cooking (as someone who hates to cook, I'm at a loss) or set in hospitals (despite my love of Hospital Playlist.) I strongly prefer happy endings. I can appreciate a sad movie but I’m not thrilled about investing hours into a story only to be depressed by its ending. Bring on sad endings!
On ratings: First off, I haven’t given most of the dramas on my watchlist a rating. This is simply because these are dramas that I watched years ago (in some cases fifteen+ years ago) and I can’t confidently rate them. Secondly, yes, I don’t give out poor ratings. If I don’t like a drama I drop it. And if I drop a drama I don’t rate it. I think it’s only fair to finish something before rating it. Who knows? It might get really good in the second half. My thinking is that if I finish a drama (without skipping any episodes,) the drama is worth at least an 8 rating. I like to think that my time is valuable and I hate to think that I’m wasting my time on crap. Hahaha.
In short, I give out 9s and 10s like candy.
