Hey, guys! I'm taking the 2017 Watch Challenge this year! Let me know if you'll do it with me!~
안녕하세요!~ ^^
♥
First, one thing you should probably know about me is that I'm just an American teenage girl who loves absolutely everything to do with Asian culture and language, especially Korean. So, I'll just caution you ahead of time that I act according to the fact that sometimes I'm convinced I'm really Asian.
안녕하세요! 저는 makeu-ng입니다~ hmm, how should I start by introducing myself?
Well, I only think it fair to mention when introducing myself that about 85% of me is made up of Korean cultural references, like pretty much anything from k-pop or k-drama to just how I live and think.
The other 15% is another story, haha. I really love language and culture in general, as well as writing and reading. English is my first language, but I have a good grasp on Italian (which I've been learning for over 3 years) and am learning Korean and Japanese. I actually want to major linguistics, so all of that is a big part of me.
I absolutely love cats and rainy days. My favorite place in the world is my bed where I live under a mountain of really cozy blankets. Want to know what my room looks like? No, it's not scary or messy or anything, I promise, and I'm not trying to be weird, lol - I just wanted to say it's like my own personal library.
some random info that isn't really relevant here (but also is?):
favorite books: All The Light We Cannot See, A Tale for the Time Being, Fahrenheit 451
current favorite book series: The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices
current favorite non-Asian movies: Big Hero 6 (#1 fav), Pirates of the Caribbean, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
favorite non-Asian TV series: Gilmore Girls (which I pretty much grew up on), Lost, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Psych, Smallville, Heroes, Adventure Time
Okay, so I kind of want to tell you a little bit about how I got into k-drama, k-pop, etc. I'm pretty sure it all started with my very first anime (which my best friend introduced me to), 'Amnesia'. After I watched that I was completely hooked. I delved more into the anime world and eventually manga (which I was really obsessed with for awhile). That lasted for a really long period in my life. I remember because at the time I was living in Italy. Sometime between me living in Italy and living back in the States, that phase gradually died down.
Once my family and I moved back to the States, there was this period of a couple months or so that we were traveling around to visit family and whatnot. I would listen to music a lot on my phone, and since iTunes had those different radio stations on it, I added some (like j-pop because I had heard anime songs before and was curious). I listened to j-pop only on that radio station for the longest time, and it would play some of the same songs (so I knew those songs but not really much about groups or j-pop in general). The real big step I took was to become curious about the k-pop station (haha, I was like 'what's this?!? is it like j-pop? let's find out!'). I strangely became reaaaally addicted to that station, way more than the j-pop one. I began to recognize songs and hum along to them. (random side note: this was also around the time I watched 'Death Note')
So after all that started, I noticed things - like how on Netflix not only did they have anime but they had these things called 'Korean dramas'?? haha. Sooo, guess what? I watched like 1 episode of 'Faith' with Lee Min Ho in it. It was really weird at first because I hadn't been exposed to anything foreign like that before, and the way Korean dramas are are totally different from American ones (which is why I love them though~). Honestly, what's weird for most people would be how they're speaking a different language, but that didn't bother me because I was used to anime (I can't remember if I had seen a Japanese movie or not by that point..) - but I love the sound of Korean and Japanese soooo. I distinctly remember thinking about LMH, 'Okay his hair is so not attractive, but is it just me.. or is he actually kind of cute?? ohmygosh, am I attracted to him??? *blushes* nooo.' lol. But anyway, this experience didn't really stick with me and I soon forgot about it - I probably stopped because an hour for one episode was too much for me at the time. pshh, now it's nothing. and now Asians are all that I'm attracted to. XD >O<''
But because of that experience, I found 'A Werewolf Boy' on Netflix. Because of that movie, I became obsessed with the song that Park Bo Young sang ("My Prince"). Soo, I found it on YT and listened to it - because of that and the previous experience with the k-pop radio station (because guess what? the songs I heard on that station like 'Love Song by BigBang,' 'Expectation by Girl's Day,' and 'Electric Shock by f(x)' were all there! and I recognized them!) , I started my obsessive journey into k-pop. On top of all this, I found Crunchyroll (because of anime) and then became addicted to 'Boys Over Flowers' on there (I only realized after watching BOF that it was on Netflix ^^') which was technically my first k-drama. Afterwards, I HAD to watch something else like it. Thus my journey began. From then on I think I went to watch 'Heartstrings' and then 'Big'. So, I pretty much found both k-pop and k-drama around the same time, and I became addicted to one because of the other. These last few events I'm pretty sure happened somewhere in March-April of 2014.
lol, I gave you like an entire timeline. That was soooo long, but that's basically my entire journey into the world of Korean culture. I only got more immersed from then on. :DD Now I honestly cannot recall what life was like being ignorant of all these things, because it's become apart of my everyday life and me.

rating guide
just a note: I rate movies, dramas, mini-dramas, and specials all differently!~
if my rating for something is 0.0, then I either don't remember it enough to give it a proper scoring or I don't believe it deserves a 1.0 at the very least.
