Zero Plot, Just Cooking and Singing

Let’s be honest, there is no plot to this 32 episode series. Guy meets girl. They fall in love. They SLOWLY get to their first kiss. Everyone stares at them with adoration. They stare at each other. The end.

This is more of a - let’s just show a lot of good Chinese culture. Chinese dishes, Chinese clothes, Chinese music, Chinese tourist attractions. Bring in some good looking people, have them eat together and make it 32 hours.

This huge cast of actors did absolutely NOTHING. How much teasing can they give the main couple? How long must the FL act 12 and shy every single time she’s with her boyfriend? What about the side couples? They literally moved slower than a grandpa with broken hips. All the side couples got together in the last 15 mins. They have the main couple way way way too much screen time doing nothing but act cute. I wouldn’t mind if they actually showed some sort of character growth or storyline. If they made it just 12-16 episodes, it would’ve been short and sweet. But y’all.. 32 episodes?! What’s crazier is that I actually made it to the end. I mostly skipped by episode 25.

Not My Demon

Listen. Don’t come at me. But this ain’t it.

The storyline is childish and disappointingly lacking. They set up this promising premise of a demon, losing his powers, falling in love, and learning to live as a human. Should be interesting, right? WRONG.

The demon here is an idiotic loverboy who can’t use his brain even after existing for thousands of years. The FL is this gorgeous looking fireball who is supposed to be smart, cunning anf cutthroat. Key words are “supposed to be.” You get an annoyingly weak and pretty FL who does nothing but let the villains get the upperhand while eating cake with her pretty husband. Then, on their free time, they’ll put in some effort to catch the bad guys. SHE HAS A DEMON FOR A HUSBAND AND THEY DIDNT SOLVE ANYTHING OR EVEN SAVE THEMSELVES.

Y’all. The brain cells I lost watching this …

Don’t get me started on the useless side characters. From the overly dramatic and clownish villains, to the side couples, to the office workers and the gang members. They were just fillers to get this to 16 episodes of showing the gorgeous leads. That’s all.

To sum up:
Even on 1.5 speed, I could not wait to finish this damn series. What a joke to the actors. Who wrote this script? A 12 year old Twilight fan?

- What demon? He was a hopeless romantic with a side hustle involving fire.
- what murder mystery? Just crazy people playing with fire.
-What villains? Just cray crays over acting and shitting their pants over nothing.
- What chemistry? Just 2 gorgeous people looking gorgeous while doing gorgeous things together.
-What deep insightful message were we supposed to get out of this? Never trust a Netflix show with pretty people.

CHAIN YOURSELF TO THIS LOVE

This is the first time I’ve written a review for an incomplete series, but it’s a MUST WATCH. So far, it’s kept me on the edge of my seat. You get a wonderful balance of romance, political turmoil in the court, battles of wit and did I mention the romance? The cinematography is stunning and the costumes are phenomenal.

Dylan and Yukee shined in their roles. As a couple, they’re definitely a force to be reckoned with. Dylan’s portrayal of the cold, cunning and ruthless high chief “eunuch” is outstanding . The way he speaks, the small gestures, the intensity of his eyes, they command your attention and his powerful aura dominates the screen. When he’s in love, he gives everything to his lover and that’s how a real man should be.

Yukee’s portrayal of the late emperor’s consort is breathtaking. She’s a breath of fresh air. She’s smart, quick witted and I love that our girl takes initiative! She’s not afraid to love who she loves despite the obstacles. I adore her.

What you get so far is a fantastic storyline with a beautiful couple who communicates, don’t have dumb misunderstandings and are courageous in their actions. I’m looking forward to seeing their story unfold and I don’t want this to end!

Edit: I finished it… and I got excited too quick. The first part of the series, led us in one particular direction, but the latter part of the series for some reason diverted from the original theme into something else. What we thought we were going to get was a serious drama with a dark tone about revenge, blood and gore. But towards the middle, it turned into a romcom that was unexpected. I’d prefer the original intent of Dylan’s character to be this brooding character filled with hatred and the thirst for revenge. However, he turned into more of this lovable, playful, goofy guy in love, which took a different direction from what I wanted. The ending itself felt very rush. Like a very typical Chinese drama. Overall I give this a solid 8/10.

Dear Husband…

I’m going to rate this in 2 parts since it has a season 1 & 2.
Season 1: 9/10
Season 2: 8/10
Overall, it is a remarkable series with minor inconveniences.

I know this series was based on actual historical events so they didn’t give us the typical good guys conquer all storyline. You’re not going to get the epic political warfare or battle of the wits in the royal court. It was more focused on the fall of Joseon during the Qing’s takeover. You see more of the heartbreaks from the civilians’ eyes. That being said, there were SO many moments I wanted to just scream and punch my pillow out of anger or just cry in anguish.

If you’re here for the romance. Hang tight. It won’t kick in until episode 18. This was THE most chaotic couple in the history of couples. By chaotic, I meant chaos followed them everywhere and every single time. They don’t have a lot peaceful times before shit would hit the fan and off we go running again and again. The ML was one of the most heroic and greenest flag of all green flags. He LOVED the FL with all of his heart, body and soul. The FL .. you’ll have to wait until at least episode 3 to warm up to her but the character development was remarkable. She went from being an arrogant, petty and selfish brat to a strong, independent, wise and courageous woman. Truly magnificent to see her blossom.

Let’s talk crazy. We all know who. Ryang Eum was batshit crazy. He was manipulative, obsessive, possessive and I blame him for the leads’ misfortunes in the first season. Nam Yeon Joon was another crazy mofo. His self proclaimed righteousness under Confucianism blinded him from seeing the actual lack humanity presented in front of him.

The amnesia. Overdone and overused. Wtf. It happened not once but TWICE? EOTAKE?!

The women in this series suffered. A lot. You need to be brave to watch some of it.

Overall, it was a great series and experience to watch. I would not watch it again.

Story of how to create a toxic romance

5/10. I’m mad as hell that this type of abusive relationship is romanticized as true love. The plot is weak and got lost along the way.

- FL traveled back in time (same period, not from our future) to correct her evil ambition on becoming queen and the lives she cost doing so. She decided to change her ways. She wanted to right her wrongs and also change the fates of those around her. Sounds like a great plot, right? It is.. if they didn’t lose focus half way through.
- The first half focused on the FL. Long story short, she decided to be a better person. She couldn’t help but get involve in the royal family’s bloody war so to survive, she had to be smarter and less ambitious.
- Wtf happened with the plot after leading our heroine up to this? They shifted the focus on XW the ML. The FL followed him around like a lost puppy while he helped her save all the people she wanted to save but couldn’t. They then decided to give ML this crazy back story with trauma, medical issues, evil schemes, backstabbing, revenge, all of it!
- The evil villain they fought against was dumb af. He got caught in all the traps they laid out. Even when we thought the villain finally did something, it turned out the ML somehow planned it all. Take this formula, repeat it 10x , and you got the main plot. It was boring and too predictable. The endless political battles were childish and overplayed. They tried to be smart about it but it was redundantly mediocre.

Now onto the toxic “romance.”
- She had 3 suitors. The first 2 she turned down were GREAT men. Both were kind, loving, and treated her with the utmost respect. She chose the one who abused her mentally and physically

- ML was the biggest red flag.
- He obsessively claimed her. This was fine for his own delusions but she repeatedly told him, she belonged only to herself. When he couldn’t have her, control her or felt like she didn’t listen to him, he became a psychotic manipulator.

- He got physical with her on multiple occasions and rarely was he respectful towards her. He repeatedly grabbed her by the throat (the throat!!), by the arm, wrist, and made verbal threats to her.

- He became madly possessive. She couldn’t look at another man before he choked her and threatened her.

-Their kisses were grossly forced upon her by him. When he asked her to be intimate, she gave in but left me wondering WTF and HTF did we get here?! This man manipulated her and it was romanticized as love?!

-She told 3 people she loved him before she even told him. Another WTF moment for me.

-The ending.. when he deliberately stepped on his son’s shirt to trip him and then kicked the poor boy after? Was that supposed to be funny and playful? Because it failed to be funny and playful to me. Even his daughter was shook.

I watched 30 episodes and waited for the romance between the leads to start. I endured her giving up two potential great men for the ML only to be given 8 episodes of chaos.

BEAUTIFULLY DONE.

This is my first BL drama and it is a life changer. I can never judge a drama by what I assumed I won’t like anymore. Who knew such a beautiful love story existed between two males under such strict censorship by the Chinese government? It is 2022.. 3 years after the drama release and this is still an amazing drama. I’m sad I discovered this so late but better late than never! That being said, I am now obsessed with wuxia BL dramas.

The chemistry between both leads are sensational. You feel the unspoken love just by how they look at one another and the simple touches. All of their scenes together are absolutely breathtaking. The story itself isn’t anything too special but trust me.. watching these two leads will get you hooked. The tenderness in their gazes, the soft words, the simple yet special touches and overall chemistry between both beautiful leads took my breath away. Wang Yi Bo and Zhao Xian were made for the roles of Lan Zhan and Wei Ying. I’ve never seen such handsome males on the screen.

Also.. don’t watch the last 5 minutes of the ending here. Search the special edition online for the actual ending. Due to the censorship, they had to move the order of the scenes around to not show a “happy” ending of the leads being together. The special edition is the actual ending with the satisfying end.

Perfect Revenge Series

This is if The Glory, Eve and Reborn Rich all had a threesome and had a baby.

If you want to watch a series that is full of satisfying revenge, smart characters and a strong female lead, this is for you. Absolutely a gem. With the perfect 12 episodes, it started out with a bang and ended with a bang. Nothing dragged and no fillers. Just badass revenge with satisfying ending.

Minor spoilers ahead:

I love that the FL started out weak but that shit ended real quick the moment she was given a second chance in life. She came back and literally served all the villains their dues plus more. I love that there isn’t much angst since the characters are all smart and the leads communicate! Yes! They communicate! She’s like, let’s get married and fuck shit up! He’s like, yea babe, I’m in. Then they plot with one another to take down the bad bitches. Insane!

This failed. Miserably.

I can push through a bad story if the acting is decent but for such a bland storyline and HORRENDOUS acting, this is one of the worst drama.

1. Yang Yang’s good looks could not save him. His acting is the same overall- quick delivery, monotone and boring.
2. FL could not act if her life depended on it. Most scenes of her acting naive, innocent, surprised, excited, frustrated etc were of her squinting her face, blowing out air and looking pretty.
3. CRINGY bromance and friendships. All the guys tried too hard and all the girls sounded like 12 year olds trying to be cute… in college.
4. I had to ff some of their romantic scenes bc it was all so predictable and repetitive. He’ll say something flirty, she’ll look surprised, then shy, then flustered and cut scene. The kisses were all him kissing a wall. She could not kiss. Awful.

Watch if you are bored and need a quick drama to kill time. If you like watching bromance and romance in the gaming like world, watch Go Go Squid. If you like Yang yang, watch You Are My Glory.

Good but not great

Have you seen Extraordinary You? If you haven’t, watch that first... because the first few episodes of this drama basically copied that one. After you get over the fact that the writer blatantly stole another script, you can somewhat enjoy this drama. However, 24 episodes is stretching it. It should have been 16 at the most. It became draggy. The actors did a good job. I enjoyed the main leads. I didn’t care for the side characters.

The story had potential. It was not a typical time travel but more of a travel to a parallel universe. However, it should have focused on the good points of the drama instead of the repetitive scenes. The storyline is not that deep and can be a light show to watch. I don’t have the energy to watch it again.

Not enough love

Sigh. Where do I start? The amount of potential wasted on this series..

The casting is stellar. You got 3 handsome and ridiculously great male leads. You got 3 great actresses for the female leads. And then you get possibly the most immature and dumb female lead.

- Constant misunderstanding
- ZERO communication, only texting or thought bubbles but nothing exchanged between the leads
- FL is written as an idiot, constantly running from kisses or any potential intimate scenes
-ML has no dimension, none, just the typical cold and emotionless

If you want to watch a series that’s about 2 good looking people in their 30s, who only text each other, but never actually communicating, good luck.

I skipped skipped so many scenes. Such a waste of talent.

Will Definitely Love in the Spring

I’m a fan of both actors. I screamed like a bitch when I saw that they’re both in this series together. Then I found out it’s a hometown setting. I screamed some more.

The story was very simple. 2 kids met in high school. ML helped FL overcome her disability by treating her like a normal person. They didn’t focus much on their teenage years. The focus was on them as adults. Now, in their early 30s, they’re living in different places, different careers, values and lifestyles. The one thing they have in common- love. Intense, loyal and everlasting love for one another. You could FEEL it through the screen.

ML: Typical cold at first but so kind and loving. He worked at funeral parlor so trigger warning if you’re sensitive to death and loss. Li Xian captivated me with his good boy handsomeness and bad boy charms. I love that he never asked FL to compromise anything and remained supportive.

FL: hot mess express but with a big heart and very strong personality. I love that she pursued him and never backed down. I love that she didn’t allow her disability to be her identity. They showed her struggles but the struggles were real and raw.

Side characters: adorable town, lovely people, the usual

Why you should watch it: it’s short, sweet and simple. No annoying side characters, no dumb misunderstandings (they get resolved very quickly), they communicate, they show a lot of affection, mature relationship & women empowerment.

Why you should not watch it: if you’re disgusted by attractive people kissing and falling in love.

My Journey to One of the Best Series. Ever.

It’s only 24 episodes. For a Cdrama, that’s only an appetizer, but it’s the main course and dessert wrapped with a cherry on top kind of good.

The storyline and cinematography are enough to pull you in but what really keeps you engaged are the characters and the acting. All the characters are intertwined and you follow them on their incredible journeys of growth and development. It’s all done in an intricate and smart way to keep us invested in all the wonderful characters, no matter how small of a role you may assume they play. The story is fast paced and you can’t catch a breath because it’s so incredibly good. You may think you know a character or where the story is going but they always surprise you with all the twists. You end up wanting to binge all the episodes at once. The visuals and cinematography are STUNNING. It’s dark, gritty, intense and captivating.

The acting. The stellar cast is beyond amazing. Every subtle reaction is incredibly powerful. Every big reaction is riveting. The actors really know how to make impacts with their skills. The director deserves an award. The script writer deserves recognition. This is truly a masterpiece.

Call the dentist bc all this sweet stuff is hurting my teeth!

10/10. One of the best series I’ve seen and not just in the BL genre. The storyline is original and the dynamic between the two leads exceeded my expectation. Their chemistry is very natural and all of their intimate moments seem so comfortable and real. The way they shot some of the scenes was so creative (that deep convo they had while walking through the neighborhood). The conversations are very heartfelt and intimate. You’ll be glued to the screen. The visuals of all the characters are out of this world.

The relationship between the leads are very mature and they deal with very serious conflicts not just petty ones. I love the built up to them getting together and once they are together, they’re sweet as ever.

Spoiler!

THE ENDING IS TO DIE FOR. I love that we got to see their married life. Ugh my teeth hurts from all their sweetness.

Would not watch again in this life

I’m going to start out by saying how this is somewhat similar to the recent hit Reborn Rich. You have the supernatural element of someone reincarnated and keeping their present memories in order to change the past. It’s the common theme of the good guys catching the bad guys.

It started out, gripping with a lot of interesting twists and turns. It’s always nice to see the good guys getting ahead of the game. However, the execution of the plot became pretty mundane towards the middle.

The bad guys’ moves became predictable and how the good guys saved the day also became pretty predictable. It was the same equation played over and over. For example, the good guy knew what the bad guy was up to so he showed him supposed secret information on a cheap word document that anyone could’ve typed up. The bad guy panicked, and the good guy won that battle. Next episode, same equation. The good guy knew what the bad guy did. Showed him some secret phone recording, bad guy backed off & good guy won that battle. It was the same rinse and repeat over and over.

SPOILER AHEAD ON ENDING

The ending was completely disappointing to say the least. Not only did none of the bad guys stay in jail, or learn from their past mistakes, you have a new villain on the rise. And the main villain supposed end was unclear and not resolved the way that we would’ve want to. It was a bizarre way to end the series. Fans ended up cheering for the end of all these bad guys only to learn that nothing the good guys did mattered. What a waste of 16 hours.

Absolute MASTERPIECE.

I’ve never watched two males on the screen with such intriguing allure before. Their chemistry is off the chart and even better than most male/female relationships. The way they speak their love language through the intensity of their eyes, the intricate words and subtle touches- all absolutely beautiful.

Acting: Gong Jun’s best work so far. You feel his pain and the complexity of his character all through his eyes and facial expressions. All of his scenes are truly remarkable. His portrayal of the cunning, playful and remarkable Wen Ke Xing is breathtaking. He is stunning in this drama. I am taken away by how he could easily transition between all these complicated emotions so effortlessly. I am definitely a huge fan, now.

Speaking of, Zhang Zhe Han’s portrayal of the righteous and distinguished Zhou Zhi is enough to last a lifetime. The softness in his eyes and the way he can control the scene with very subtle expressions are amazing. I love how his character develops and the overall story arc.

Storyline: 9/10. Absolutely outstanding. 37 episodes are not enough! We need more!!
