Great visuals but no plot?

I don’t usually write reviews but I felt like I needed to do it for this one, since I really don’t know how to feel about it...

After watching the trailer I was really excited to watch This movie and in the beginning I did also really like it. The visuals are absolutely *chef’s kiss*. The cinematography, set design, special effects, and styling works really well together to bring this univers to life and I instantly fell in love with it.

I also instantly fell for the main character. He is very charming, which might in part be because Xiao Zhan could make a rock seem charming, and with the introduction he was given its hard not to immediately start rooting for him. However, as the story went on I started getting increasingly more and more frustrated with how passive he is. The main character never seems to really DO anything. Instead things juste sort of happens to him and he never really questions it.
I was also happy to see that the story has several female characters, but all of the side characters feel very underdeveloped. Some of them weren’t even introduced until the last third of the movie, where they were only given a few minutes of screen time.

My biggest problem with the story is the plot - or lack there of... I had to pause the movie somewhere in the middle to go and read what the movie is even supposed to be about, but even then I was watching the movie and thinking “that isn’t what is happening though?”, and when there was only 20 minutes left of the movie I still wasn’t sure what the plot was supposed to be. I spent the whole movie just waiting for it to begin, and it wasn’t until the last 10-15 minutes, that I felt like things were finally starting to get somewhere. I’m excited for the second movie, because the first one left on an interesting note, but I don’t think that this one stands very well on it’s own. I haven’t seen the series, but I definitely got the impression that this story is better suited for a series format rather than for movies.

Deeply touching story about platonic love

There are some stories that stay with you, and this one is certainly one of them for me. Even while watching it, I felt a sense of sadness that it would end so soon. I would have happily watched another 100 episodes, but sadly everything good must come to an end.

These characters became so precious to me in such a short amount of time, and it genuinely hurts that I won’t get see more of their story. I don’t remember the last time a drama touched me so deeply, and I really really hope that it will become more easily available for international audiences one day.

I was not expecting the aroace representation to be as good as it was. I was willing to look past some imperfect ideas of aromaticism and asexuality, and just be happy to finally see some representation, but the writer did an amazing job with this one, and it truly feels like a drama made with love towards people on the aromantic and asexual spectrum. I could not have been happier with how they portrayed these characters. I found myself crying many times while watching it, not because it was sad but because I felt so seen in a way I have never felt before.

I tend to get bored easily with these more slow paced slice of life dramas, but not with this one. The pacing was perfect, and I never felt that time was being wasted on unnecessary filling. I think this is a story that will make a lot of people think about their own lives, and what love means to them. I wish they would have talked more about platonic love, and how it can be just as important as romantic love, but I feel like they showed it beautifully.

You must absolutely keep an open mind

I went into this show with super low expectations, thinking that I would just see what it was about to pass some time. Never would I have expected to fall so much in love with this series! I was even counting down the days for the next episode to be released!

I think the main reason that some people on here don’t like it, is that they’re missing the point of the show. They start watching it with the expectation that it’ll be like the other bl’s they’ve watched, but it’s not and never claimed to be. This show has a disclaimer, reminding you not to look for logic, for a reason. It’s absolutely crack. Never have I seen anything so weird in my life and it’s honestly an experience to watch.

I will say though, that one of the things that surprised me about the show is how much heart it has. In between all of the crack there’s actually some really beautiful moments and even some really good life advice. It’s refreshing to watch a show where the characters actually communicate with each other and handle their problems in a mature way.
