I rarely write reviews but I felt compelled to write this one, because I feel quite upset at how the show ended for the most likeable, sweetest character of the show, Chen Pinjun.
I know not every show has to be about likeable characters, and it doesn't have to go the way I want it to, but I really found it hard to separate my feelings towards the two main characters from the show itself. I couldn't stand Yan Fei and Hai Qing, ESPECIALLY Hai Qing, who arguably was the most feeble-minded, self-centered idiot. Both mains cheated on their partners who truly loved them. And what chemistry are they talking about, I didn't see any chemistry or any real reason why they would be so attracted to one another.
Pinjun was the best character for me in terms of who I could actually empathise with and whose actions I understood. Yet he is the one most wronged. He went through hell because of Haiqing, only to be left alone in the end. I find that very upsetting. I was not hoping for him to stay with Haiqing, because Haiqing is an asshole, but I was hoping we'd get some sort of scene where he finds a new partner a while later, someone who truly cherishes him and treats him right. I didn't cry watching this show until I realised there's no happy ending for Pinjun.

The acting wasn't all that great to be honest, and I was bored of the stupid back-and-forth storyline between the mains. The OST was nice and the cinematography fitted the story with all the cool tones. Overall I didn't enjoy myself though, I was mostly angry at the main characters and pitying their original partners.

All I can say I was sceptical of the hype to begin with, and didn't watch this show for a long time after it came out, out of disbelief that it was really that good and also out of doubt that they could satisfy me despite of China's censorship on depictions of queer characters or storylines.

But BOY, WAS I WRONG. This was brilliant. This show is the most incredible piece of art. I loved everything about it. I am so happy. This might actually be my favourite series of all time now.

The acting was great, the OST was great, the storyline was extremely engaging and interesting, the character development was amazing, there were so many complex and intriguing plots and characters.

I loved this show just so, so much. I don't know why I'm trying to write a review when I just finished it and am feeling very sappy about it, and it's almost 5 o'clock in the morning. But I just really can't hold back, I'm so satisfied with this. Sure, there are one or two unexplained things (like, what really happened to the yin iron shards? were they actually destroyed? if so, how was that suddenly possible when it proved so impossible all those years ago), but I can see past that. This was as close to perfection as a show can get.
