Cigarettes and Alien Sci-Fi for people who don't like Sci-Fi

Maybe I am the weird one; I generally hate, not just dislike, most science fiction. I can get behind the supernatural stuff--or, at least, some of the Korean-style semi-Buddhist dramas, since their portrayal of and coming to terms with death is often therapeutic for me, in the same way that, say, emo music like Brand New is what I'd prefer to listen to through bouts of depression rather than upbeat TWICE or whatever else.

But the overwhelming majority of Sci-Fi, be it Star Wars, Dune, Dark, Stranger Things or the gazillion UFO films I have seen just fail to pull me in. Perhaps Doctor Who and Brazil (1985 - great movie, btw) are some of the only ones I feel positively towards, at least, out of the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I think a big part of what kept me interested in this is that it's more of a psychological thriller, dealing with broken relationships and mental health, with an alien-themed plot that acts as the glue to hold it all together; you're significantly more focused on the characters and what is actually even real, if anything, rather than starting off with some explicit and in your face plot of, "yes, aliens have crash-landed on earth and are now devouring people like crocodiles, enjoy".

Was it the best show on the planet? No, probably not. But I cannot comprehend why this bombed so badly. Given the nature of sites like MDL and MAL to gravitate towards the higher end of a 1-10 scale, I saw the number alone and had an [unjustified] feeling/bias against it before even watching the first episode.

The only reason I even gave it a shot was because it had the writer of Extracurricular on board, and I am glad I did.
