It seemed like I would especially enjoy it because of the historical/fantasy aspects, which are genres I love, but these are only very small parts of the drama. Although I did expect these to be only small parts, I didn't enjoy the rest of the drama anyway. I found myself wanting to skip lots or sometimes felt like I was falling asleep. The plot skips ahead often and feels a bit all over the place, as if the writers didn't really know what they were doing. I constantly found myself frustrated and bored with the story.
In saying that I loved the parts involving the Grim Reaper, and his relationship with the Goblin and Sunny, and when the fantasy/historical elements did appear I enjoyed them. The acting was also very good. However, overall I did not enjoy this drama and would not recommend it unless you like watching generic, boring romances with poor writing (or watch it and skip all of the main romance- lmao).

Big Sad
I really did love this show. I think it was better at the start than towards the end, I know it was meant to be sad but it did get a little slow. Additionally, some of the plot points felt a bit rushed. I’m conflicted about the king because he was attractive and well written but at the same time he was inconsiderate and most of the time only thought of himself. Plus the parts where he almost forced himself on Deok Im really put me off. I get that it’s probably historically accurate for him to be this way but in a fictional drama that focuses more on the romance, it wasn’t really necessary. The acting and visuals however were incredible! I also enjoyed the balance between the romance and political side, neither felt like too much.I’m sad now, in two ways. One is that of course the ending in general is sad for explicit reasons. The other is due to how the drama portrayed the misogyny of the past, and how all women no matter their standing or class never got to have the life they truly wanted. My heart pained so much for Deok Im and the other women in the palace. Even the Dowager Queen who was trapped forever and not able to leave for her brother’s funeral. It makes me understand more perhaps why they decided to make the king forceful towards Deok Im, emphasising how little power women had to make their own decisions (still didn’t like it though bc we were then meant to love this guy). Anyway I definitely think I will find myself rewatching this.

Wholesome and Romantic
I don’t usually write reviews but I just had to give my thoughts on this drama! It honestly made me so happy, it was so wholesome and it’s so easy to fall in love with Chief Hong. I was nervous that there would be too much of a love triangle but it wasn’t focused on too much which I was glad of. Also the lesbian representation was done well and made me so so so happy!! The only downside was that when the main couple got together it did start to get a bit boring? I’m not sure if it’s just the loss of the thrill of their initial falling in love, but it did kind of feel like they changed completely as people when they became a couple. Also they were a bit cringe lol. But overall this drama was such a good watch! Was this review helpful to you?
