How To Watch K-Dramas: A Step-By-Step Intensive Guide

  1. Arm yourself with snacks and pillows
  2. Dim the lights
  3. Immerse yourself
    >> warning: symptoms may include: gasping, giggling, swooning, squealing, cackling like a maniac, watching through your fingers, face-palming, cringing, throwing pillows at the screen, and/or sobbing your eyes out <<
  4. Binge like there's no tomorrow
  5. Come back tomorrow

Who Am I?

Hi there! I go by "esile." (It's an inversion of my middle name, but you didn't hear that from me.) I'm off to college again this fall so I'm lying to myself and pretending I'll get all my drama-watching in before classes start. Yes, my sleep schedule has suffered. No, I don't have enough regret.

Some things I enjoy in my spare time (besides binging romcoms) are reading, going to church, studying languages, making music, doing art, and walking around small towns on fair days. Also I love Eric Nam.

And How Did I End Up Here?

I started watching k-dramas this February.

The long version of this story begins with how I started listening to K-pop after I had an aversion to it for so long. Buuut we'll keep things simple and say my journey to k-dramas began more or less with my desire to pick up some 한국어 , Korean language.

Simply put, I found a list of "simple" dramas well-suited for beginners to follow, among which was Drinking Solo. Lucky for me, it happened to have full episodes on YouTube (shoutout to the channel Cereal)! And that's how I was introduced to Asian dramas.

I stumbled across MDL while looking for the cast list of Drinking Solo, where I discovered recommendations and a whole world of k-dramas I hadn't known existed. And I've been hooked ever since, for better or worse....

So What Do I Like To Watch?

I'm still figuring it out! The more I watch, the more my taste develops. (That means you should probably take everything I say with a grain of salt for now.) Anyway, currently...

  • I've decided to watch only k-dramas. They're in my target language. That's my excuse. ;)
  • Most of what I've seen so far is rom-rom. I know they're cheesy and cliché, but they're like my chocolate. My guilty pleasure. I love it when the sweet guy gets aggressive as soon as there's competition for his love interest. Even more than that, I love love-triangles... but it's a love-hate relationship, because #feelings. I usually end up thinking the guy who "loses" should've ended up with the girl, rather than the guy who "wins." The Second-Lead Syndrome is strong. It's tragic, really.
  • Consider this:
    • In general, when it comes to films:
      • I  deeply appreciate thoughtful cinematography, engrossing plots, realistic and multifaceted characters, developed character arcs, talented acting, meaningful soundtracks with intentional motifs, insightful themes, emotional conflict, complicated motives, poignant dialogue, etc.
    • When it comes to k-dramas:
      • I like watching feel-good eye-candy, just because. Cute wink from a cute guy? Sends me.
    • Take that however you will.
  • I recently saw I Remember You (aka Hello Monster), which had less emphasis on romance and more emphasis on the story and the conflict. It was dark and thrilling. I really liked the depth and dimension, as opposed to a typical romance that's all fluff-for-the-sake-of-giggles, you know? So maybe there's a more serious side of k-dramas I'm about to get involved in...
  • I also like it when dramas share my values... but since I've yet to come across one that does entirelyI usually go with the flow and dissect things mentally instead.

Le Système de Rating

Not that I'm consistent with this, lol, but to throw it out there:

⭐ - Couldn't stand it. Probably dropped it. (0 -2.5)

⭐⭐ - Wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't hate it, but it didn't really vibe with me. (3-4.5)

⭐⭐⭐ - I enjoyed certain parts of it more than others. But it was alright. (5-6.5)

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Pretty good! I liked it in general. (7-8.5)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I enjoyed it on multiple levels for multiple reasons. Might rewatch sometime! (9-10)

I'm inclined to 5-or-4-star rate everything as soon as I finish, then give it a more honest rating a few weeks (or dramas) later.

(I have yet to rate something less than three stars. Are my standards too low, or do I only watch good k-dramas? That is the question.)
