My childhood revisited...
Decided to watch this because of the pandemic.I first watched the 80s version when I was a kid and loved it, but I was a simpler person then. The premise is still great, however, my appreciation for storytelling has matured over the years. Simply put, not as good as I remembered.
I watched it with subtitles, so I may have missed the nuance of native speakers nor would I know if it's "good" or "great" acting.
Our heroes are stock characters. We have a naive young hero that is all good, a heroine that is perfect, and a variety of character tropes. At least the bad guys were not comically bad. I actually found the villains to be more interesting with more depth and better character arc, they are flawed humans with redeeming qualities like a real person.
I don't like the constant eavesdropping to move the plot forward. Or the constant coincidental crossing paths with other characters at a very high frequency. There's also too much exposition.
I admit I don't watch many Asian dramas, and my friends that do says it's like this with most of them. It's a soap-opera with very cool fighting.
