The Handmaiden (2016)

Both thrillers are inspired by western novels, with the setting change to Asia of the last century. The cinematography is spectacular and the plot itself captivating.

Both have Lesbian romance. Both have erotic thriller elements. Both have the couple coming together and plotting against those that did them wrong. Both are pretty sexual and dark in tone.

Both female lead were raised by heartless, psycho mam. They stayed and get good at their chores, tasks and duty. However, they also plot to revence

They both have many obstacles they have to overcome to be together and not be controlled by the expectations of the family/society they live in. They both have some spicy wlw scenes. SPOILER! They both go against the typical lesbian historical romance trope by having a happy ending for the lesbians!!!

Both are dark stories that take unexpected turns! Though I will say that The Handmaiden's story is easier to follow than Old Boy.

Seok Won was found murdered at home. The suspect is his daughter Yoo Jin. Her mother Ja Yeong struggles to get Yoo Jin free and not guilty. The two of them live a normal everyday life but they’re both traumatized. Then one day, Ja Yeong meets Dong Ha and opens up to him.

Same Male actor on both movie. Both have very brave sex scenes. Both movies were very intrigue. Good acting and unexpected ending.

If you like bizarre twists and themes about hidden identity, then this is for you. Other than that not much else is the same.

Both have a stunning chemistry between the women and I also noticed that the pairs actresses from TPOTW (Two Moons I pertain to Moon Chae Won and Moon Geun Young) and The Handmaiden (Two Kims pertains to Kim Min Hee and Kim Tae Ri). They have similar surnames which I find it cute.

However, TPOTW has a tragic ending that's why I wished and waited for 8 years for a lesbian movie that defies South Korean stigma against LGBTQ.

Lust, Caution reminded me of The Handmaiden. Both play in countries under Japanese occupation and between the 1930-40s. Both are for mature audiences and include nudity and sexual content. The movies are based on stories, Lust, Caution on a short story, The Handmaiden on a novel.

GAP is definitely more goofy than The Handmaiden but both are good in their own ways
