Dont waste your time to watch this

"Medical Examiner Dr. Qin" disappoints with its final case, a ludicrous plotline that renders the entire episode pointless. Despite promising comedy early on, the series quickly loses steam, offering tedious and uninspiring cases. Don't bother watching for Zhang Ruo Yun or Li Xian's acting; it's simply not worth your time. The existence of a second season is truly surprising. Save yourself the disappointment and skip this one altogether. The lack of character development and repetitive nature of the cases make it hard to invest in the show, leaving viewers feeling unsatisfied and unengaged. It's a regrettable waste of potential.

Predictable Procedural Crime Show

I watched this because of Zhang Ruoyun and while it really wasn't the greatest, it was easy to watch.
The characters were definitely the best part of the show, but beyond their relationship with each other, none of them were very well developed (other than Qin Ming). I wish, since the murders weren't all that interesting and incredibly easy to predict, that the show had spent more time with the characters and that we got to see more of them beyond them working together.
I also think this show could've benefited from developing the overarching plot. I actually liked this plot point, but it should've been hinted at more throughout the show (other than the mention of missing molars) and I wish that the killer's reason for framing Qin was better. Also, mini rant here, but it was fairly obvious who the molar killer was and that disappointed me a bit too. I think part of the problem is that in a murder mystery the killer has to be someone the audience has met already and since the characters don't do much other than work and go to eat, it was clear that the killer was someone who worked at the restaurant because obviously it wasn't going to be one of the cops.
But yeah, I would watch if you enjoy gruesome murders and like one of the actors.

A little inconsistent but quite good

This series would have been pretty amazing crime series if every case had been as good as the the last case (or combination of cases) involving someone hatching an elaborate plot to take revenge on Dr. Qin. The villain in this case seems a little too resourceful to be convincing. I also wonder why the case that caused the person to take revenge on Dr. Qin isn't fully included as one of the actual cases in this series but is only alluded to. It seems potentially interesting.

The earlier case involving identical twin brothers is also rather interesting. The rest of the series is still pretty good, but I find that some cases get solved too fast and maybe too effortlessly.

The friendship between the three main characters is nicely portrayed, making the characters likable and humane, which helps draw the audience into the series. I have yet to watch the sequels with a different cast, but it would not be easy replacing the original cast in this show.

Excellent investigation!

I didn't have much expectations for this when I started it, but I grew to love it. I loved the dynamic between Qin Ming, Dabao and Lin Tao, their friendship made me happy. I was able to predict a few cases which made this more interesting to watch because I love being able to guess for myself what happened and who did it. The cases weren’t disappointing at all and they were very different, which made the show more interesting. This also proved to me once again, that Zhang Ruo Yun is a great actor. I guessed pretty early on that this would have something of a Holmes & Moriarty dynamic, they did not disappoint.

As a last input, Dabao has great taste in fashion.

I enjoyed this drama - recommend watching it. Each murder plot kept me glued to the TV set - yeah, I use Chrome-cast on YouTube. Zhang Ruo-Yun has this air about him, yet remains likeable. He acted well someone very confident with himself - the same as in Novoland Castle in the Sky. But he was a lot more arrogant in the latter.

The murder plots had each their own twists, so it was difficult to guess who the real murderer was. It is not quite as dramatic as Bones or one of those major Hollywood crime stories. I attribute it to the less dramatic music. But I like the ending theme song and it seem Zhang Ruo-Yun wrote the lyrics and sang it - very talented.

Each episodes is only about 30 minutes and there are only 20 episodes - it easy to complete it.

However, the images are blurred off whenever gory parts of the bodies of the victims were removed - perhaps to overcome the broadcast ratings.

I binged the show and I felt like it deserved a full review.

About the Story:
There is a nice flow in the story. It gives us a short introduction to the main characters to show us what we could possibly expect. The build-up is steady with certain hints here and there, but you must be attentive enough to catch them. It's definitely not a drama to play in the background while you're doing something else. The climax of the story isn't stretched out too much, but they sure made it a bit more difficult than it could have been, but it gave a good deepening in our characters relationship. The cases were a lot more detailed and explicit than I expected and I like how they filmed them too, it gave us the full ride.

About the Acting/Cast:
Absolutely loved it! The acting was something I really, really enjoyed and it felt really natural. Ruo Yun did a good job playing the colder character, but still knew to keep him alive. Li Xian had Lin Tao under his control and he felt really natural. I loved how Jun Yan played Dabao and it made me love the character too. They all had good chemistry together.

Music:
To be honest, the music didn't leave a really deep impression on me. The only thing I remember is that the different kinds of music were played at the right times but it wasn't something special.

Rewatch Value:
While I'm not one to rewatch dramas a lot, I would give this one a shot to rewatch! I would wait quite a bit though, just long enough to forget the outcomes of the cases.

Overall:
A really enjoyable experience! Just sit back in your most comfortable seat, get yourself some snacks and binge it.

Characters: I honestly am I sucker for eccentric main leads that have intelligence. The character design was perfect as they brought me into the story as I would say for sure that I enjoyed every minute of this show.

Acting: The acting was pretty good as they kept me in the show and kept the plot flowing throughout. This was a good cast choice as there are some that could be better, but it is still amazing. Not one character lacked anything.

Music: The music just wasn't memorable to me as it was just ok as I enjoyed it even though there wasn't that much.

Rewatch: I rewatched this show and I would definitely say that many people would rewatch it as I loved the show and rewatching it even more as it is rare for me to rewatch shows but this is my exception.

Murder Cases Fleshed Out on the Slab

If you like watching crime series Dr Qin is the best quickie you can have. Cases are solved in one episode, every detail is fleshed out by Dr Qin, literally on the slab.

The Good and The Bad

The bromanship between the inspector and his colleagues is the main reason I'm following Dr Qin. Their interaction and one liners are so funny. (Lin Tao: "I just spent 2000 yuan and got myself a swimming card" Qin Ming: "One adult swimming for 45 minutes will drink 16 liters of urine. When you drank it, was it sour?")
It's a pity there's no romance between Qin and his forensic assistent, I would love some sexual tension in this show. Anyway, it is as good as it gets, the filmmakers already compromised on their storyline. In the novel of the real Dr Qin, "Murder in Dragon City", the man is decently married and Da Bao is just another male colleague.

Overall

What really kept me hooked is the way the Chinese justice system works according to this show. Take for instance the urge to solve a case in 48 hours or the way the local press is covering the crime news. Reporters publicly mention the surname of a person who’s still a suspect. So the city, crime scenes, clothing, room interiors may have a western touch, but the police and justice system are authentic. I would say "Stare and Compare"

Now, I like a good crime show and seeing that Zhang Ruoyun was in the show- it felt like this was meant for me. Zhang Ruoyun is my favourite male actor and seeing him in such a good show has backed my choice up once again.

Story: 9.5
I would've given the storyline a 10 if it wasn't for the ending. I didn't hate it but it could've been better. There were quite a few unanswered questions that could've been answered. The first two episodes were VERY graphic in terms of the displaying of the corpses and the autopsy scene and I was dizzy for a few scenes but nothing I couldn't really handle. They cooled down for the rest of the season and censored certain parts in whatever ways they could. If you don't take to A LOT of blood kindly, skip the first 2 or 3 episodes. I also have to talk about the comical scenes. They had me bawling. It was a refresher-especially the ones that come when they are in the restaurant before or after a case.

Acting/Cast:10
Not much to say here but I loved the cast choices for this show- from Qin Ming to Xiao Hei. Qin Ming is the eccentric main male lead, Li Dabao is the bubbly and sarcastic but also intelligent assistant to Qin Ming and Lin Tao is the assertive yet ridiculously hilarious male lead. I love the The main three's chemistry was amazing from the start. Their personalities just seemed to click and I couldn't think of anyone else to play the parts.(This is why I was disappointed in season 2)

Music:9.5
The theme music was really catchy to me. I found my head bobbing to it when I watched the episodes.

Rewatch value:10
I watched this show in 24 hours and I'm not kidding. I started on 01/07/2020 at around 1 a.m and ended on 02/07/2020 and around 1 a.m. I literally sat in my seat and watched this show like crazy. I couldn't tear myself away for anything other than basic things(food, hygiene, parents). I will definitely watch this over.

Overall:10
This has to be one of my favourite medical shows I've seen so far. I wish they brought this cast back for season 2. I love this show and I hope that whoever sees this will watch it and like it just as much as I did.

Crime / Suspense / Mystery with a bit of humor on the side

Liked the concept of the show. Crime/Suspense/Mystery with a touch of comedy. Some parts are unrealistic but still entertaining to watch. Maybe the only thing lacking was a bit romance to spice things up. But its OK, the story still manage to make me hooked and entertained.

This show demands attention to details, viewers cannot just skip full episodes or you might miss something..

Love the banter and camaraderie between the main characters. It's a nice change of phase, that this story is not drowning in drama.

As I have said before (in my God's Quiz Season 1 review) I AM A SUCKER FOR EPISODIC CRIME DRAMAS! and this one is no different lol I think it is because I grew up watching shows like CSI and Law and Order but every time I find an episodic crime drama, I drop everything else and binge it (no matter how many other dramas I am watching) and this one was no different.

STORY: As I just stated, this is an episodic crime drama so if they aren't your cup of tea, DON'T WATCH THIS ONE! One of reasons I like episodic crime dramas is because there is a new case every episode, you don't stick with 1 story for very long. If there is 1 storyline in a drama and you just aren't feeling it, you may drop the drama or get bored...not with episodic crime dramas...every episode breathes new life into the drama. Now my ONE gripe with this drama is I felt that the last case of the drama, which I think lasted the entire last 4 episodes, did not have to take up 4 episodes to complete...I thought it dragged a bit and could have done perfectly well with only the last 2 episodes but THATS IT! The story was never dull and always kept me guessing which I loved.

CAST: I thought the cast had good chemistry and I liked that there was not any romance in the drama. It was refreshing...SO people is you are someone who needs romance in any drama you watch, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU! I thought the acting was well done. The actor who played Dr. Qin was spot on which led to a lot of comedic parts and I loved the other cop and his assistant. The three of them together worked very well together.

MUSIC: Don't remember much about the music

REWATCH: I would probably rewatch this again because it is short and I can watch 1 case in a couple of episodes and not have to watch the entire drama to get satisfaction from it.

OVERALL: This drama hit a lot points for me. It was a good and satisfying episodic crime drama which is always fun for me. Yes I had that one gripe about the writing but that is minimal...Watch this drama if you like crime dramas...Oh also WARNING: If you can't handle blood, surgeries, autopsies and things like that, this drama isn't for you...there are some graphic autopsy and crime scene shots (didn't bother me but just a warning.)

So I started this drama with some doubts, - c-dramas are typically not known for being great in crime-solving category - however, I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up really enjoying this show.

Story: First of all, this drama is set up more like western shows or Korean crime-dramas as there are many separate cases presented and solved within 1-2 episodes. They are like mini story arcs. However there is also one large case that is somewhat prevalent through out the entire drama. For me this overarching case was the main disappointment. The mini arcs were great, but the ending slowed dramatically and was way too predictable and almost irrelevant to everything that was building up.

Another great thing about this drama was the timing. C-dramas often drag, but this one (being a web drama with 30 min episodes) was fast paced and really kept you on the edge of your seats. The script was also really well written and the characters fleshed out.

Acting/Cast: Really loved the cast. They were honestly perfect. The chemistry between the three leads lead to extremely lighthearted banter despite their serious situations and it was just really refreshing. The girl (Li Da Bao) was honestly my favorite and really carried the show. She has spunk, is bad-ass and extremely intelligent.

Many people ask if there is any romance in this show and I thought I would just address that: There are hints of romance between two leads but it mostly gets played off as comedy. If you are hoping for some real romantic development, then this is probably not for you. The leads are more like bickering siblings than anything else.

*As a side note, don't eat when watching - I thought that I would be okay nibbling on some Pocky but some scenes were a little hard to get through...
