In 1930s Shanghai, amid war and chaos, Mr. Lu is ambushed during a meeting with the Japanese army. His brother-in-law, Watabe, sacrifices himself to save him, but the Japanese later murder Mr. Lu’s family. Seeking revenge, Mr. Lu’s mistress tries to kill the culprit but is killed in the attempt. Years later, as the Sino-Japanese war ends, Mr. Lu learns from his former boss’s widow, Mrs. Wang, that Watabe is alive and a Japanese spy who caused his family’s deaths. It is not a gangsters movie, nor a war movie. Is a movie that deals with the dark side of the time periods, and the dark side of the people living in them. A movie where there are no good guys vs bad guys per se, however a battle does rage through the movie.
