They are about Youth and how kids deal with things happening in their lives.

(About the filmmakers) Nagahisa cited Anno as one of his artistic inspirations, hence similar elements such as coming-of-age, friendship, & liberation.
One has more whimsical & vibrant style, while the other is dark & disturbing.

Coming-of-age stories set in a small town, with touch of surrealism.
Both have cynical, zany, & unpredictable characters that depict rebellion, depression, existential crisis, or social media usage.

both japanese short movies follow high school students who are bored of the small town they live in and their uneventful life. There is a focus on friendship and youth. And so we put goldfish in the pool is way more 'loud' and out there with its editing etc while She's Gone is more quiet (and kinda confusing tbh..)
