If you didn't know it by now, Tiffany is one of my favorite actresses. I try to watch all of her dramas. This one is one of her better shows. I was hooked from the beginning. Yes, CDramas are so long. Sometimes I just wish they have like 20 eps to watch instead of twice as long and twice the drama.
Acting - all the characters are so good in their roles. The evil ones are the best. I loved how Zhang Wen Jin's one-sided love turned him into an insane stalker/killer because of his illusion of love for Zhang Lian Xin. Lian Xin's character developed over time. I loved that she can climb the social ladder of society and make a name for herself. It doesn't hurt that she has all these men vying for her attention. The only thing is that I can't tell who she loves. Is it Chong Yong? Is it He Tian? Chong Yong's character is so brilliant. He is a force to be reckon with. He has super good martial skills, his devotion to Lian Xin, his struggles with the Japanese, his will to survive, and so on. I was rooting for him the whole time. He Tian is a great detective and such a nice guy. Will he end up with Lian Xin?
The story is great. I liked how it starts off with the wedding and then flashes back to the events that led to the wedding. I'm not sure if I've missed some scenes because the story didn't flow. But it didn't matter anyways because you can tell what happened with the possible deleted scenes. The costumes they wore were nice. I couldn't stand Lian Xin's hairdo as a maid. One word...yucks! I just wished the conclusion wasn't so open-ended. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. Overall, I've had some countless night watching this. It's very good. I totally recommend this to anyone who like very long dramas.

I am a bit disappointed at the ending. But being set in such a dire historical time for China, perhaps it couldn't have had a different, more triumphant ending. I think Chong Yang is the core of the story. He IS China. He represents what the country went through and the values it chose to hold on to throughout the horrific episode of the Sino-Japanese war.
Other than that, I enjoyed the way the characters developed from weaker to strong and determined individuals, but it would have been nice to see more of an edge to them.
