THE BEST

Mr. Queen is my first experience watching a historical kdrama and ever since i’ve watched it, i feel a constant void that no historical kdrama have filled soo far.. It’s simply the best historical time-travel body swap kdrama that there is.

Initially, i thought it was just a historical comedy but the royal place schemes and secrets had me sitting on the edge of my seat. They incorporated main character’s cooking skills into the story in such a brilliant way. The macdonaldo had me choking. The drama is fast paced and every episode ends on a cliffhanger. I was blown away by the plot twists . And 20 episodes never felt this short before. Usually I get bored around episode 10 of a kdrama but this drama is the exception.
Apart from the story, acting is top notch especially by our Queen. Absolutely lover her badass attitude. The king did well too. Our lady choi deserves a chef’s kiss. Top level comedy and top level chaos. A 10 /10 for sure.

Definitely well scripted

Never a fan of historical dramas but watching this because of Shin Hye Sun. I loved the comedy element of this drama. It is great that Jo Hwa Jin managed to pull herself back before she went down the wrong route, that is definitely a plus point for me.

But i wished that the the queen kim so young had a little more character after switching back, although i did see a little of Jang Bong Hwan in her! Definitely love the friendship between the palace maid, court lady and the the queen!!

Definitely a great drama to watch! Not one episode was boring! There are equal parts of romance, intense and comedy in this drama so whats there to not like right?

Will leave you laughing

I have rewatched this show several times now because it brings me such joy and entertainment. The first time I turned it on I actually was having a very hard time getting through the beginning and turned it off. But on my second attempt I forced myself to get through the first episode and then found myself hooked. Now I like to rewatch it by fast forwarding to all my favorite parts to get some smiles between other dramas.

The two main characters really shine here, especially So Yong that pulls off playing a man in a woman's body so hilariously well. From the way she speaks and the inflection in her tone to the way she moves her body, her acting here is superb. Even Cheol Jong was convincing as the spy hiding behind the spoiled puppet king persona and he grows on you with each passing episode as he grows and changes while interacting with the Queen. You don't take this show seriously at any point but it is just fun. The character development is executed so well and the pacing of the storyline keeps you interested and moving forward.

This is not a show you watch for accuracy, believability, or depth but for pure enjoyment and that is exactly what you will get out of it. You'll laugh and have fun at the interactions between the King and Queen and at the over the top ways the show pokes fun.

MUST WATCH ? Best drama of Shin Hye-sun!!

This is different kind of gender swap story. At first when I was reading the synopsis, I though it was weird and absurd. Basically a present day male chef trapped in the body of a queen from Joseon era. However despite the storyline, Shin Hye-sun nailed her character so well!!! The way she portrayed her character's identity crisis surpassed my imagination. Her facial expressions and movements alone are enough for you believe that she is a man in a girl's body. Kim Jung Hyun and the supporting casts did not disappoint. I never expected this period drama to be so hilarious. Watch it if you need a good laugh and be in awe of Shin Hye-sun i promise you won't regret it!!!

exchange of souls

Mr.Queen ? I saw this series a few days ago, it is a new concept but I can guess what will happen next but I didn't expect it to end like this ( climax)

Shin Hye-sun Acting was very natural like ,not everyone can act like a man is in a woman's body but she acted well. and she is a huge strength for this series I can't stop laughing when I watch this series

Kim Jung-hyun is second strength He gave as much as he could give to that role

strength
1. new concept
2. laughter
3. heroine acting
4. comedy .

weaknesses
1 . predictable screenplay
2 . songs a music could have been better

I am sure you can enjoy this series a hundred percent guarantee

FANTASTIC WATCH

I'm going to miss this drama! It was a good thing that I decided to check it out. The story was fun; I am usually not fond of historical dramas but this one has an interesting twist in it. I love the blend of comedy, romance, and historical aspects to it. It's like the PERFECT merge of present time with the historical period. The little incorporation of modern terms through the soul of Jang Bo Hwan, was the most entertaining part; how he acted as himself in a totally different period and in a different body that causes confusion and curiosity among people lmao. However at times, I felt like it was draggy and 20 episodes was too long for me, but later realized, it was not enough because I grew fond of it. The story was well written and well delivered. For the cast, kudos! It was a perfect idea to cast Shin Hye Sun as the female lead. She owned every characteristic of the two different personas she played- from being an elegant queen to being the quirky crazy person that was stuck in the past. She's really so good that I can easily say she's one of my faves now. The other actors were good choice too, specially Na In Woo, I had a little SLS in this drama. At first, I was rooting for him and the queen but then, main leads happened so... Anyway, I think everyone was so cute (I don't even know how to describe them lol) but none of them was hated by me on a different level. I kinda feel empty now that I finished this drama. For the people who's looking into checking this out, do it right NOW, this will become one of the greatest decisions you would ever make in your kdrama life!

perfeito

Extraordinary performed satire

Impressive drama, worth watching because of the amazing cast, great acting of all actors and the unusual style of story telling. Absolutely adorable with all its absurdity and ridiculously bittersweet comic situations, which give many laughter in the midst of the serious issues. It starts as an excellent strong satire, softens at the end and the ending is not as remarkable as desired, but the truth is - the ending didn't manage to change my impression of the whole drama at all.

To understand this drama and get fully entertained and really really laugh, some knowledge about Joseon era needed. That's why I don't recommend it as a first historical K-drama, unless you already know Joseon history from other sources different than dramas.

Cute and Unique

I love the story its very well written. I love the people who act in the show they did a very good job. However the ending was rushed and it felt like it was forced to be rushed. That is why its a 9 and not a 10. Everything else I liked. The main couple was very nice. Very few scenes in his modern life which makes you wonder who he really is. They give you a short summery but like not much. The ending was bittersweet i felt sad and sweet at the same time. I wish it could've ended just a tad bit better.

UNEXPECTEDLY....GOOD.

Starting to like K-drama and this one is part of reason why. I love the acting, the best is the Court Lady Choi - with her 'exasperated' expression she's the most beloved. Its pretty funny, traditional ancient setting with modern slang in dialog. He's a famous chef from 21st century that transported to Joseon era in the future queen's body to King Cheoljong. A story about a man trap in a a girl's body that felt like she's misgendering herself still as a man - a man that's not interested with other man. As the wife of King Cheoljong - she's avoiding the King (husband) because she thinks herself as a man. On one drunken night, they sleep together, the husband is joyful finding his queen so willing while the wife sadden when she sober up.

This drama is about altercation power between dominant powerful families; Kim & Jo. These family wants the power to be on top of the game by manipulating people. While the King is an easy going and sweet person, he has secret ambition not to become a puppet king and want to do more good for his people. One thing about K-drama I like is they don't drag the episodes, the fight scenes more to real one than using fake visual effects, and nobody scratching-high-pinch little girl voice or men gazing mindlessly...the story line is pretty deep with modern touch in some of scenes.

The King and Queen has a relationship system 'no touch' which means (according to the King) live happily and peacefully (+ separately according to the queen), when the King is finally fallen hard in love with his queen but being trap in a woman's body - the man in her avoiding any kind of physical relationship and more dreaming about King's concubines. I like when one of the official said "the defeat is not a result but the cause." I don't really like ep 19 - she's been acting like a bravado man but when critical time demanded it - the man inside her acts more like a helpless spoiled girl. The end of drama ends pretty good, he came back to his old self again in the modern 21st century while the queen had his man back with baby on the way.

A real pleasure to watch

Mr. Queen is ticklish-funny and a real pleasure to watch. I am debating myself whether it deserves a 9 or 8.5. (As if that mattered hahaha). The first 8 episodes were the best for me. After that, it turns into a more typical sageuk where palace politics takes over and it all becomes a bit of a snoozefest. I've watched too many sageuks to have any patience for palace politicking.

Shin Hye Sun is my absolutely fave actress, her ability to portray feelings is superb. She has a gracefulness and intelligence that shines through even when she's portraying a badass clumsy-ish guy. Unfortunately I watched the Red Sleeve before this, so I couldn't appreciate Kim Jung Hyun in the king role at all. Most of the time he looked like he was about to fall asleep. He was good in CLOY, but this went far above his acting abilities. But critics tend to praise non-acting aka having a straight emotionless face all through the drama. Bae Jong Ok: I just love her voice. She and Kim Tae Woo had quite boring roles though. Na In Woo was great as the second lead, his character was so well written. Some of the other characters like court lady Choi were absolutely delicious and/or the butter on the bread (the King's friends). Some of the comic characters were just fillers, not very funny or interesting.

This would have benefited from being shorter. Although I do appreciate the humour, there are so many kdramas deserving a higher rating, therefore, 8.5.

One thing that was sheer torture here was the music. Why they chose to pick this style instead of a more contemporary one, I don't understand. Had to be muting the volume all the time.

Mr. Queen (2020)

An intricate tale of unorthodox romance layered underneath a veil of silliness and exaggeration.

As with all stories involving the olden days, there's always the twists and turns involving hierarchy, politics, corruption, et cetera. Mr. Queen, despite having comedic roots, still managed to fulfill those roles quite well. The show kept viewers engaged to the story progression and knew exactly when to alleviate the tension with lighthearted comedic bits. While largely entertaining the show's script did carry a bit of bloat. Bloat that, when combined with the historical context, did make the show feel draggy at times.

And then we have the ending. A tricky thing to approach and ultimately one of the rare weaknesses of the show. The way the ending sequences and the penultimate moments where the "all's well ends well" pieces start falling into place were a bit... weird. It was unfortunate that some parts of the show felt unnecessarily fleshed out whereas the vital ending moments were anything but.

The cast. Just wow. All of the characters, leads and supporting, were all enjoyable to watch; performances that were over the top yet well executed. Of course, Female Lead Shin Hye Sun puts on an absolute gem of a performance and really gave life to her character. Actors that are tasked to portray characters that pull double duty can be challenging but when they get it right it sure is a sight to behold. And her majesty did not disappoint. Her majesty, Mr. Queen.
