What goes up must come down...
I want to say that this drama isn't bad. The writing was all over the place. I would say the first half we perfectly paced and hit all the right spots. Then BAM you like "Where the hell did that come from???" I am a HUGE fan of Xing Zhao Lin and he did the best he could. I know many people hated him in this drama but the actors can not be blamed for poor writing. I would say they did a fantastic job. Riley Wang seemed to be completely at home in this role.. (He is so gosh dang cute..)The story adds some weird complexity to this drama personally I don't feel like it is needed... It was a waste of episodes and this drama could have very easily been 24 episodes. The love triangle that Zhang Xue Ying, Xing Zhao Lin, and Riley Wang are a very entertaining one. The interactions between the male leads are unique and chemistry is there. I wouldn't be shocked to find them to be great friends outside of working together. I do hope to see them together again soon.
Zhang Xue Ying character kinda pissed me off. For reasons I really hope you find out. All in all, she seems like a completely down-to-earth girl with no life experience.
Fighting scenes were meh... I would say that they were poorly edited.. The costumes were really nice. Even some of the side character's hair was on point and that is saying a lot because normally they cheap out on everyone but the main leads and villains...
Anywho, I would say watch at your own risk. I did like it but was annoyed at the turn of the drama purely because it came out of left field.

The Bird should be the Main Cast HAHAHA
But yeah honestly like some reviews, it started with great potential then eventually there's so many unecessary twist and turns for the leads. The bird led too many complications and thats the one I hated.It really broke my heart to see Yanzhen and Miao missed their timings for couple of years. Back then I really liked Siyuan but yeah i kinda expected him to do that, I just can't accept it hahahahhahaha. He became too clingy with Miaomiao that led to his obsession.
The music was great. It matches the final scene. The costumes especially Xiyuan was so fine, i noticed the embroidery. I JUST HAVE TO POINT OUT ONE THING HAHAHAHA
Watch ep 29-30 and you'll see Tie Niu's wig from the side ? (when Constable and Tie Niu was fighting over Liuying for the proposal)
Anw it was kinda a new story for me. It was so romantic that Pei Yanzhen had the country and power but gave up most of it just to have Miaomiao.

So messy
As much as I like XZL but boy oh boy I have a hard time with this drama. The story line is not good. So FL took advantage of the ML then 2nd ML took advantage of the FL. Then there are so many misunderstandings like, come on! usually for C drama around mid-series you have a big misunderstanding and that is it. This one it is like almost every other episode. And omg that damn bird ! The FL lead was portrayed to be smart but she ate up all the thing the damn bird said? I mean common sense did not kick in that the bird only took part of the conversation. I only like the casts and I definitely don't like the story line. I might need to take several adult beverages in order to finish this drama. It is so aggravating. Review for choice husband
Honestly i think song san deserves better.. the scriptwriter should have put him as the male lead as he has more chemistry with the female lead. The female lead couldn't move on when the male lead already broke their relationship multiple times.. Honestly it was the male lead's choice if he wanted to accept the decree or not, he chose to for his ambition when he could chose to stay away from political affairs. The only good character is song san , he deserves better. He is also the one fathering her child.. In some times song san was the only one playing and raising the kid, the father(male lead) did not even wanted to recognize or even bother to tell the child that he was his father, he didn't even care. Its honestly messed up, the scriptwriter should improve on the character development of the male and female lead.It is very frustrating to watch. Please improve on this scripwriter.
The male lead( xing zhao ling) also wasn't displaying emotions in some part just emotionless.
The male lead is a red flag when multiple times he tried to abandon her and even lost contact with her for 3 years. She had to raise the child by herself but the femalelead in the script, she is attatched to him. Please have a better character development. The play also described the fl as a person that does not know how to move on. The best character is song san as he raised her kid and kept pursuing her and she didn't even gave him a chance?? But people have to learn to move on... Also, the male lead, pei could have the chance to abandon his title and stay with niao but he chose to accept the marriage decree and there was literally no political corruption in the movie. For the first few episodes, why did she just fell in love with someone she just met.. There are plenty of ways but this???

RILEY WANG'S BEST EYEBROW
The one I catch with this drama is Riley Wang's eyebrow, it's the shape that we are girl dying for. Very pretty but don't think it's great for Riley Wang. Ok, the story was about a rich merchant girl who got married with Official Pei just to avoid an Emperor's harem, same as Pei to marry her avoiding 4th princess advances. While the Dowager Queen disagreed with their marriage union, she's tried to break them apart so she could manipulate situation to her benefits both ways. 2nd time around she decided to marry 3rd young master from Song family, a playboy merchant that had his reason to marry divorcee rich woman like her. Things happen when she got pregnant with possibility either of them, as both men claimed to be the father of the baby but surely confused with her pregnancy timing (2 or 4 months pregnancy). Was it still during her marriage to Pei 4 months ago or her recent marriage to Song 2.5 months ago. So, back and forth unknowingly....the most expert imperial gynecologist decided it was 3 months pregnancy which became more a mystery; whose baby was it? Decided she's rising the baby as Shen family where she's part of.I like her step mother, aunt concubine, they're good to each other and very close relationship. The whole confusion of pregnancy was to understand 'don't get drunk and sleep with a guy' because after all the fuss....they still didn't know whose the father of the baby? Both men had the possibility and greatly happy to be the father.....while Shen Miao likes Pei more than Song they broke apart for safety reason. Shen Miao tried to divorce Song...and find another guy to be her 3rd. Why did so many men like to have her as a wife (including the Emperor)? Because she's an heir of rich merchant and her birth mother hide treasure that believed to be great amount and she's the only one who knew where it was....the wealth the Kingdom needed to finance war and power. Pei was a talented brilliant scholar, who's young Emperor trust to build and modernize the kingdom although he took low position just to avoid the eye from dowager Empress. I couldn't stand seeing the hairdo of little boy's hairstyle, so much ribbons for boys, don't you think?
Riley Wang was the sole businessman of Song family. He had few concubines and interested in Shen Miao for the same reason like other men'her wealth and businesses'. They tried appease dowager Empress for relationship and business licenses for they're in bed with problems in hand. Anyway, Riley Wang was act annoying, keep calling her name 'Miao Miao' sound cheesy. I want to kick his ass by every second 'Miao Miao...' sigh. Dropped it...

Don't watch it; it's a very poorly written script with unlikable and shameless characters.If there were an award for bad writing skills, this writer would certainly win it. I initially believed this drama had potential, but my hope diminished with each passing episode. The writer deserves a special prize for this story.
The 7.0 rating on MDL is grossly overrated for this frustrating story.
The secondary male lead is involved in all the schemes, yet he ends up with a prominent position in the royal court, while the female lead shamelessly supports the second main lead and gets a happy ending. It's a wrecked story, and I think the Chinese audience's reaction will be one of disappointment after investing their time in this drama.

Loved this
This is the perfect story of how things catch up with you. What began as an objective, ended up being the main goal of the whole story. This shows how dishonesty can taint a relationship and ruin everything going forward. Even when he was trying to correct his mistakes he could not because someone else was being dishonest and playing games it try to win the bride. I personally felt that Pei Yan Zhen (Zhoa Lin) and Song Xi Yuan ( Riley Wang) both were excellent in the roles they each played. I do not think there could have been a better cast choice. I personally loved the show overall and would say it’s a definite rewatch.Was this review helpful to you?
One of the most complicated conspiracy
OMG I don't know what to say about this drama. This drama definitely one of the most complicated conspiracy & misunderstanding in the drama world. Everything unrevealed in the last episode that make ur heart ache for all the misunderstanding that happen between our couple, Shen Miao (MM) & Pei Yan Zhen (YZ).I definitely more like Riley Wang in here. Haha... His bad vibe really match him, or maybe he's more suit play the bad guy then the main lead in the drama. Haha... Sorry for all his fans.... But he's definitely have more expression than his usual character, maybe that's why I more like him here. Haha...
Definitely must give trophy to Song Xi Yuan, never really expected his scheme is that bad & complicated. I don't know must understand what he did or must cursing for what he did to MM. But this is also definitely the most pity character that Xing Zhao Lin ever acted, that I've ever watched. How many times I want to stop watch this drama, due to I can't take it anymore watching what happen to YZ. But in the end I must know what scheme that cover all of that....
If you want to watch something complicated, have hidden meaning in every episode. This definitely something you want to watch. But if you hoping to find usual light hearted rom-com, this definitely something you want to get away from. But in the end I really quite enjoy the drama....

3rd class drama
This is a 3rd class drama ..i watch my entire life ... after divorce marriage another. I can understand.But the female lead represents basically complete slut . Like public wife . She want both male lead .
Like pron related. For entertainment trisome .
I recommended not to watch this type of drama . Fu_king priority here .
I also love female lead drama .. like legend of fuyo.. legend of white snake .... who rules the world .. last immortal... etc ... but ever drama .. misunderstanding presents. But not they become fu_king slut .. or fu_king with other ..
I don't understand why such talented actor actress play such thpe of nonsense drama ......
2nd marriage ok ... but i want to eat both ... this represents dirty mentally..
I recommend noble writers should think about that ......
Fucker must be killed.. in drama or real life that only accepted......
I think this type of drama .. can uproot a .. well healthy family or society completely..

I really tried
This drama was okay-ish... I must admit, this drama didn't hold my attention at all. I really tried to revisit it a couple of times, but my goodness I couldn't watch it out. Bailed at episode seven. It maybe good for another person's preference, but it was definitely not for me. While there wasn't much difference from other Viki shows, the execution left a lot to be desired. Maybe it gets better, but there are just so many good dramas that I want to get to, so stopped watching. Para quem procura drama romântico e fofo, não assista esse drama, pois tem muito sofrimento e principalmente no ep 29.Pei Yan Zhen (Xing Zhaolin) é o ser mais triste que já vi em dramas, ele casa por questões políticas, porém desenvolve um amor profundo por Shen Miao (Zhang Xue Ying), sua esposa, mas devido a tantos desentendimentos, esse casal não terá uma vida feliz, eles tem um filho, mas para protegê-lo Pei Yan Zhen terá que abrir mão de viver com ele e sua esposa, para que a Imperatriz não os elimine, a história é de cortar o coração e para completar Song Xi Yuan (Riley Wang), o segundo marido, fez muitas jogadas para separar de vez esse casal.
Drama, angustiante, sofrido e Shen Miao não confia e nem ama tanto seu primeiro marido, na minha opinião, pois acredita em tudo que falam contra Pei Yan Zhen. Como é a história de um livro, mesmo tendo ajustes o público não gostou muito, mas eu como sempre amo os dramas com Xing Zhaolin, pois ele faz muito bem papéis dramáticos, espero um dia vê-lo em um projeto que ele seja ou um bom homem do início ao fim, ou seja um vilão, pois acho o talento dele desperdiçado.
